Agony and Hope Kindle Edition
“I have endured the deepest agony, only to be shown a hope so bright I cannot but yearn for it.”
Fitzwilliam Darcy is mourning the love he lost—a love that was never allowed to bloom. What will become of him when Georgiana is wed, and he is left by himself? He cannot give away a heart not his own. Must he remain in this mournful existence, anticipating the nights to come, where in his dreams, he can finally be with Elizabeth, a spectre of his once living, breathing beloved. When a surprise visitor brings unexpected news, his hope is breathed back to life. Will he finally obtain his deepest desires? Will Fitzwilliam Darcy be able to leave behind the agony of the past and hope for the future he once thought impossible?
Due to circumstances beyond her control, Elizabeth Bennet’s family is irrevocably altered. Her father is dead, Lydia is missing, and her mother and remaining sisters are to be relegated to a life of poverty. Fitzwilliam Darcy’s behaviour at Pemberley indicates he still loves her, but too much has happened. She can never hope for him to once again make the offer of his hand. Elizabeth’s sole option is to abandon the life she once led and start anew. But what happens when her path once again crosses with the love she thought lost to her? Will Elizabeth choose to protect him with the one option available to her or will she put aside the agony of the past and choose hope?

About the author

L. L. Diamond is more commonly known as Leslie to her friends, and Mom to her three kids. A native of Louisiana, she has followed her Air Force husband to duty stations including: Louisiana, Mississippi, California, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, England, Missouri, and Maryland.
Aside from mother and writer, Leslie considers herself a perpetual student. She has degrees in biology and studio art but will devour any subject of interest simply for the knowledge. As an artist, her concentration is in graphic design, but watercolor is her medium of choice with one of her watercolors featured on the cover of her second book, A Matter of Chance. She has multiple certifications in fitness and coaching swimming. When she’s not writing, she is Head Age Group coach of her swim team. She also plays flute and piano, but much like Elizabeth Bennet, she is always in need of practice!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2025I enjoyed this variations plot. Well written and kept me engaged. It was a little too angsty for Elizabeth because of the time it took for her to wake up and stop refusing Darcy! Seriously!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2021One thing I value about this author is her willingness to write a seemingly dark and unique variation. While she has written “worse,” this one still includes sad circumstances, one of them involving Lydia. I won’t say much else but despite her horrific actions and their far reaching consequences, you can’t help but feel for her as you discover where life took her.
The same can’t be said for Elizabeth unfortunately. Granted, she spends a large chunk of this story unconscious and near death, and that is to be pitied. But she really is her own worst enemy in this story and it’s exasperating for us the readers. The more she makes Darcy suffer for her obstinacy, the harder it is to like her in the end. Darcy is wonderful in this story, and perhaps (no, definitely) TOO good for her. But, we get our HEA and that’s what matters. Also, along that same vein, the quick way Elizabeth finally does the right thing felt way too fast. I almost got whiplash at how quickly she came to her senses.
So, yes I did enjoy the story. In fact, I will say my three favorites here (besides Darcy) were: 1. Richard because he’s just delightfully funny here (and honorable mention to Lady Fitzwilliam for her hilarious treatment of Richard when he acts like a child. Their relationship was adorable). 2. Jane for having an actual personality here and being more assertive and open. And 3. Lady Catherine. I believe this is my favorite Lady Catherine from the countless JAFF stories I’ve read. She is so funny and as you will see if you read, she does a lot of GOOD in this tale. She was such a pleasant surprise.
I would definitely read the story again, despite the few problems I described above.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2021This is a wonderful, well-written book which I highly recommend. I have lost sleep from being unable to put it down. Leslie Diamond writes with deep incite and emotion especially where Darcy is concerned. Jane is stronger here and seeks Darcy’s help when she is afraid Lizzy might die of what would be the flu and complications in today’s language. The two oldest Bennet sisters were supposed to be living with their Uncle Gardiner, but they feared they would be a financial burden and disappeared into a squalid part of London leaving behind word of their deaths, though there was a lot of uncertainty.
There is quite a lot of mystery here that comes together at the end. This also has a likeable version of Lady Catherine who is still herself but with a kinder heart and is clearly of use.
Darcy and Lizzy both have loved one another over the 2 to 3 years, and he was in great despair which was even worse with Georgiana marrying well and leaving with her husband. When a ragged and desperate Jane appeared things changed as he had hope, but that could have slipped away with Lizzy so desperately ill. She was also insistent that she could not marry him because of damage to his status, which did not matter much to him. There is also a mystery about Lydia, too. Thankfully Wickham was shipped away to the colonies and out of the picture after abandoning Lydia in an attempted elopement.
What does not fully make sense is Lizzy thinking of returning to a squalid, dangerous, unhealthy neighborhood, and she snd Jane going there in the first place. Fortunately they met friends to protect them and help provide work with overflow sewing of dressmakers. Jane was a skilled seamstress here. It did take longer than I liked to get Lizzy to stop trying to run from her own happiness. Jane apparently had no desire to go back as she saw a chance for her future starting to come to light and she understood the health hazards better than Lizzy. She also understood Lizzy’s heart. Anyway, this is one of the outstanding variations that is very unique. The HEA seems like a long challenge at the start and near impossible. The things that do not seem to make sense would make less of a story. Thank you for such a wonderful and unique book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2025After looking at the despair that comprises Darcy's life, this tale takes the reader along a path where our beloved characters regain their faith in love and happiness. A captivating story!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2021The premise was far-fetched, but it was a fun read. I did have issues with how quickly everyone forgave Elizabeth for letting everyone think she was dead. However, the most implausible part happened in the last few paragraphs (I won’t say what it is, as I don’t want to spoil it.)
Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours as a summer read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2021Darcy's told of the death of both Elizabeth and Jane Bennet and goes into a depression which lasts for several years. One evening he has a visitor who is Jane Bennet coming to beg his help. Elizabeth is deathly ill of fever and needs help. Finding her in the worst slums of London, he brings them back to Darcy House and nurses Elizabeth back to health. She hid when her father died of apoplectic attack hearing of Lydia eloped with Wickham. Although she and Jane went to live with the Gardiners, the costs were heavy on her uncle, so they ran away. ( foolish, headstrong girls). Darcy knew about Wickham and his treatment of Lydia who was left physically and emotionally scarred. He sends her to Lady Catherine as a companion and then captures Wickham and sends him on a one way trip to the Caribbean as an employee with instructions he's to never return.
Most of the story is about fears of the Ton, the hypocrisy of a strict moral standard of the Fitzwilliams but the Earl is living with his mistress, his heir and wife both have the Pox, and the attempts to sell his family into marriage for political purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Agonia e speranza

5.0 out of 5 stars very sweet and satisfying
I love a dramatically intense departure from canon, especially one that makes Darcy seem even more changed and amazing. This was a fantastic book I wish was even longer. I could always do with a bit more spiciness too but this one was very heartwarming.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very moving
Minor spoilers***** I have read this variation many times. I particularly like the first half of the book. Darcy's despair is very moving, so is the reunion of ODC. Elizabeth is a touch too stubborn in her refusal though and her reaction is not entirely believable. The whole plot isn't, to be honest, but what should be a major flaw (I usually do not enjoy unbelievable stories) is easily forgotten. This is an emotional read which should not disappoint readers who enjoy a very romantic story and a swoon worthy Darcy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read
I enjoyed reading this story, despite some parts of the plot were a little bit unconvincing, e.g. the reason for Jane and Elizabeth's leaving the Gardiners (and the Gardiners' immediate acceptance of it after their reunion), or Darcy's constant presence in Elizabeth's sickroom. But the story was original and well-written, and the characters likeable, so all in all it was a very good read.
