Oliver Dasenby is the most infuriating man Primrose Garland has ever known. He may be her brother’s best friend, but he has an atrocious sense of humor. Eight years in the cavalry hasn’t taught him solemnity, nor has the unexpected inheritance of a dukedom.
But when Oliver inherited his dukedom, it appears that he also inherited a murderer.
Oliver might be dreadfully annoying, but Primrose doesn’t want him dead. She’s going to make certain he survives his inheritance—and the only way to do that is to help him catch the murderer!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOliver Dasenby just became a Duke quite unexpectedly. He finds it fairly satisfying except for someone trying to kill him. His friends, Rhodes Garland and his sister Primrose, are determined to help him survive. The three attend a house party where they think they'll be able to find the murderer. Oliver and Primrose also find a little romance.
I've read a couple of other books by this author, but this is the best yet. Oliver is a perfect match for Primrose. She's a bit prickly and he is more frivolous though they both discover hidden facets in the other. As their romance heats up, Oliver's propensity for games leads to some fun scenes. I liked that they tease each other but are never mean about it.
The premise of these books is that a Fairy godmother has given the women in a family a special gift. Primrose gets translocation. Fortunately, it's not used too much as a device here as my personal taste is not for this type of addition to a historical romance, but I think others will like it and I didn't mind it so much in this book.
I also have to say that I like Rhodes a lot and I hope he finds a new romance in a future book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAfter the death of his uncle Reggie Oliver Dansenby is now the new Duke of Westfell. Something he never excpected to become. He had 3 other relatives in line before him. Now all have died within months of each other.
Primrose Garland 27 year old spinister, daughter of the Duke of Sevenash has been given a mysical gife by her Fairie Godmother Baletongue. All of the Garland girls have been granted special gifts. Prim's brother Rhodes Garland Marquess is best friends with Oliver.
After two episodes when someone pushes Oliver down the steps and under an on coming coach. He realizes someone is trying to kill him. He goes to talk it over with Rhodes. Prim comes in a sees them whispering and they confess to what has been happening to Oliver. The 3 of them decide to go to the Cheeves House Party where they intend on trapping the murderer.
Oliver and Prim begin to recognize that they love each other. They are always shutting themselves off to talk about what they found out but whine up kissing.
My problem with the story is I hate Spinister stories. Why is Prim a spinster? She's not just off the shelf. She is locked up with the doors to shelf close she is so old. There is no reason at all for her to be 27. She is beautiful, the daughter of a powerful Rich Duke. These aristocratic families insured there daughters marriage. Prim is suppose to be an intellectual and spends her time in books. But she doesn't know what a males private parts look like. She has never seen male art forms in all these books she has read? This is very questionable. The other problem I had is there are two many repetitions of words and discriptions used. I call them word fillers to extend the pages of a book. This author is in dire need of a good editor!
These are the reasons I could not rate the story 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOliver Dasenby expected to work his way up the ranks as a cavalry officer, but he finds himself named as the new Duke of Westfell. Suddenly, all the young ladies are circling him like birds of prey...all wanting to be his new duchess. Fortunately, there is one woman in London who still treats him like the person he always has been. Primrose Garland is the sister of his best friend and knows well how annoying he can be. The pretty but bookish young lady has no interest in marriage and especially not to him! When Oliver realizes that someone is out to kill him, Primrose and her brother set out to help him find the killer.
I love the Baleful Godmother books and this is the best one yet. I snorted, chuckled, and laughed out loud at the irrepressible Oliver. It was impossible to not fall under his spell. I look forward to each book to see what new 'gift' will be
given to the heroine. This one was great and Oliver's reaction to it was hilarious. The matter of fact Primrose was the perfect foil for Oliver. In fact, I thought this whole book was just about perfect. And, now, *sigh* the too-long wait for the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBut then so did everything else. A really good story but a case where less would be more. We start out knowing that the bad guy is one of two relatives, then maybe neither of two relatives, but on second thought...some of the back and forth could have been condensed. I enjoyed the banter and the growing love between Prim and Ollie--it was kisses only up to the last chapters, at which point H/h had declared intentions to marry. I liked it well enough to read more Larkin, and I hope Rhodes gets his own next chapter.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis paranormal romance had it all, although it was very light on the paranormal side. From a romance perspective, it was wonderful. It hit all the emotional high points for me. Primrose and Oliver were childhood friends, mostly because Primrose's brother is Oliver's best friend. Primrose is scholarly and not afraid to call Oliver, a Duke, an idiot. But not in a mean way, the way a loving friend would say that to a best friend. Of-course in Victorian times, women did not act that way, which made Primrose unique. Oliver is lighthearted and always joking and laughing. That brought a breath of fresh air to an otherwise serious book. Everyone in this book is suffering in some form or another. Primrose is worried about her brother, a widower with 3 small children, and Oliver, who someone is trying to kill. So many attempts on Oliver's life! Then there are other characters who are also having mishaps, so it is almost comedic about who is going to try to kill whom next. This was a delightful book! Serious issues yet not a dark novel. Wonderful.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow, drags a bit
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOliver Dasenby, the Duke of Dasenby, has a murderer lurking behind him. He attends a house party with his close friend Rhodes Garland and his sister, Primrose. Primrose has the magical ability to translocate.
The Duke and Rhodes stick together so Oliver doesn't come to harm. There is another intrigue going on at the house party and that makes things a little more interesting.
But still the story drags a bit. The romance comes at the wee end and is not as stimulating. Feels like something the author put in as an afterthought as the book is supposed to be a romance novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars The author is now an auto-buy for me
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI truly enjoyed this one! Great characters, a mystery to be solved, an unsavoury relative, a nasty stuck-up bitch of a girl causing trouble to our new duke and some lovely sex scenes between two people who, despite themselves are deeply in love - not just physically attracted to each other. I do hope most sincerely that our heroine's brother, Rhodes, will get his own story soon. The friendship between him and our hero, Oliver, was well-drawn and how nice that brother and sister are not at loggerheads but are friends as well as siblings. Nothing in this to complain about whatsoever. Emily Larkin is a bright and shining new star on the Regency historical front. Even the magic, which is not especially my thing, is fun in her historical stories. I liked Primrose, our heroine a lot - she's someone I'd like to have lunch with. And I might even have a go with the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius. Well done and bring on Rhode's story ASAP.
