Thomas S. Flowers is an Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran who loves scary movies, BBQ, and coffee. Ever since reading Remarque’s "All Quiet on the Western Front" and Stephen King’s "Salem’s Lot" he has inspired to write deeply disturbing things that relate to both war and horror, from the paranormal to gory zombie infested worlds, to even dabbling in vampiric historical fiction. Readers can expect to find rich characters, realistic historical settings, and mind-altering horror.

Be sure to check out his PLANET of the DEAD series and The Last Hellfighter, both of which have been best-sellers on Amazon's Top 100 lists for Apocalyptic Fiction and African American Horror respectively.

A doctor who treats veterans with varying degrees of PTSD arranges for a sort of shock-therapy session in a purportedly haunted house for a group he's treating in Thomas S. Flowers Palace of Ghosts.

This is a smart, creepy supernatural horror novel, one of the better ones I've read this year. While I did find the basic structure hewed close to a familiar formula - if you've ever read The Haunting of Hill House or any other stories about a group of people staying in a haunted house, the structure here is going to feel very similar - the quality of the writing elevates the material.

Flowers handles his prose with a deft hand, with rich descriptive passages weaving the plot in confident strokes. The author knows the story he wants to tell and how he wants to tell it. Even better is that this is the rare horror story presenting veterans as real, flesh and blood human beings trying to deal with the damage caused by their experiences, as opposed to unstable lunatics ready to snap and murder everyone in the room. Flowers delivers a well conceived, relatable cast of characters here and in doing so sheds some light - based on his own background in the military - on the very real struggles many veterans experience upon returning to civilian life.

Definitely an upper tier entry in the haunted locale genre, I highly recommend Palace of Ghosts. This was one of my favorite reads of 2020. I'll definitely be reading more of Flowers work moving forward. Highly recommended.

The reader is in for a interesting ride in this novel. Four Iraqi war veterans go to Galveston Island to experience horror and experimental treatment for PTSD.

The veterans are an interesting mix of personnel. Samantha ... canine handler US Army; Brad was a Military Policeman...he really desired a good night's sleep; Andy, a drone operator who is questioning his existence and Marcus...

Dr. Frederick Peters and two of his associates intend to prove an exposure theory hypothesis ...which they hope will assist in the treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Will these four test subjects be able to face the demons of their past or will they fail in their quest? And, be warned that all is not as it appears to be....

This author uses vivid imagery in his novels and this one is no exception. For me, it was an interesting read in that the author was exploring an experimental treatment for PTSD. So much needs to be explored and put into practice in this field for our returning veterans.

    Highly recommended.

In the beginning I was impressed by the respect the author showed for veterans who were victims of PTSD. Some of the premises were very original but it was all downhill from there. People just wandering around a dangerous place. Having visions, getting knocked around and then - carnage. And the final ham-fisted "twist" was easy to see from miles away. And Dexter was just there to get a few insults in. Don't waste your time on this one.

Weird book. Not necessarily bad, but not as good as I thought it was going to be. In a way it reminded me of “The Twilight Zone”.

A wonderful and spooky story that kept me glueded to my seat and wondering what will happen next. Great read!

Experimental treatment for PTSD gone bad. I never fully understood any of it, much less finding it a psychological thriller.

Long winded with little to grasp onto. Pretty much a snore fest. It was so interesting I didn't know I had finished the book, probably because I slept through the last half... Did I say it was boring?

A new twist on 'people staying in a haunted house' theme. PTSD sufferers are there to face their fears.Things never turn out as planned in these scenarios. Matt Weight was a fine narrator. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great haunted house story!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 2, 2019
I'm a big fan of haunted house fiction and really enjoyed 'Palace of Ghosts'. The story begins in the vein of such stories as 'Thirteen Ghosts' and 'The Haunting of Hill House' before moving in an unexpected direction.

The characters were a real strength here, all of them felt believable and under went emotional journeys that had real weight. They grow and change as they face what war has done to them, unfortunately Amon Palace won't let them go...

Without ruining any of the story the 'hauntings' themselves are different from what you would expect in the genre, far more visceral and alien. As things escalate and grow out of control you're left with a sense of closure but also a need to know more about Amon Palace. Hopefully there will be a sequel!
