Then a plea for help from a young rover boy leads them into the middle of a horrific bloodbath against an enemy no one has seen in over a thousand years. On April 14, 2014, Michael opened his laptop and began typing what would become two multiple award-winning series: The Aldoran Chronicles, and Street Rats of Aramoor (both set within the same world, but twenty years apart). Slow Burn Epic With An Amazing Cast
5 out of 5 stars
Slow Burn Epic With An Amazing Cast
So far, The Aldoran Chronicles is the perfect slow burn epic. Before reading this I felt like The White Tower was a giant prologue (in a good way), and I expected the pace to increase in book 2. - I figured Ferrin would make it to Easthaven pretty early on, & connect with the characters there I was wrong, but also in a good way. Wisehart took what could've been my biggest disappointment with the book & turned that thread of the story into my favorite. I've read a mega ton of fantasy series, with lots pace variation in them, some seem to go by too fast, some too slow. When it comes to the slow variety I feel like there's 2 main ways it goes wrong, nothings happening, or a ton of bs is happening. Wisehart has this seriously perfect slow pace, the defiler didn't jump out from behind a corner, and the plot didn't feel stretched out. The balance between viewpoints is really awesome -It's comparable to how far flung characters can be in ASOIAF. -But where some series were originally intended to be a trilogy – then stretched, Wisehart has planned for the long haul with The Aldoran Chronicles. Characters: I found myself liking Kira even more, her "we run these streets" speech & her interactions with the queen were particularly great. But where some characters just furthered an opinion I already held, like with Kira, my mind was changed with others. My favorite Easthaven council member was easily Orlyn in Book 1 & was surprised to find that at the end of this book it was Feoldor, lol. Another example would be Aiden's turn of character at the end of The White Tower –laughed out loud pretty good at him wanting to duel Ty to the death over Lyessa in Plague. I was also worried about Aryion loosing his memory, but with the flash backs felt better, because it seems like he won't be lost for too long. He's also still a bad ass, & that helped. I felt like I might've enjoyed his thread a little more with some comic relief accompanying him, but that might just be an influence of the amount of lighthearted fantasy I've been reading lately. Plenty of people in reviews talked about how long it took to write this book, but the delay was professionally editing & re-releasing The White Tower. Doesn't it make sense Wisehart wanted to get Book 1 straightened out before writing the next 9 or however many this series runs? Not to mention, the prequel to The White Tower, The prequel/spin off series- Street Rats, and the Aramoor Market all happened in between! How many other fantasy authors can you name who put out 5 books of a similar caliber in 3 years? It's not a long list. Bottom line, this series is a must read!

I was very excited to receive an advanced reader copy of Plague of Shadows for an honest review. As I began to read, I quickly realized that I needed to reread the first book to remember all the players in the story, especially those who were not featured in the two books from the Street Rats of Aramoor.

Plague of Shadows is told from varying points of view, just like The White Tower. I typically enjoy this, but as more characters were added, I got a little frustrated because I wanted to follow my favorite characters and ended up skipping chapters to just read their story. I also needed to go back to previous chapters to figure out who was who. (It brought back Wheel of Time memories of frustration.) Because of this style, some characters had less time than I wanted and others didn't move as fast as I wanted. Thankfully, a glossary of characters is included at the end of this book to help keep people straight.

Overall, this is a typical second book where moves are made to prepare for major (hopefully) plays in book 3 - a bit of character development for some, geographical movement for others, and new alliances made. I am looking forward to the continuation of the story through the next books in both The Aldoran Chronicles and The Street Rats of Aramoor.

I have also purchased the book.

The opening of book 2 begins with a 'OH NO' moment for readers of the first book "The White Tower" with Archchancellor and the bulradoer, Lenara, committing an act of evil. You'll have to grab a copy and read it for yourself, I don't want to spoil it for you but I will give a hint of Old evil never dies it's just reborn.

The rest of the book picks up with each of our separate groups of heros where we were left off in "The White Tower". New Readers should definitely read "The White Tower" before venturing into "Plague of Shadows". And if it has been awhile since you read "The White Tower", I would recommend rereading it to refresh your mind with the characters, it's an excellent book as well!

After their escape from the White Tower in book 1, Smith Ferrin remembers his promise to contact Azriel's Son Kellen. We learn more about the guard captain Nostrils who helped Ferrin, Rae and Suri escape the White Tower.

Rae & Suri will learn about life outside the tower as Ferrin leads them on a journey to find and reach his sister before the Tower can find her and then plans heading to Easthaven to find Azriel's Son Kellen.

Meanwhile in Easthaven, Kellen, Ty and their family and the remainder of the Easthaven Weilder council are recovering from their battle in book 1. In the "Plague of Shadows"', Ty with his entire family, and the Easthaven Wielder Council will battle darkness in their town.

I was frustrated by Ty in this book who loves his family deeply but is filled with the need to seek revenge for his adopted mother's death. His impatience with his family wanting to protect him and his lack of training in the magical arts leave him open to an old enemy of darkness to fuel feelings of distrust and disloyalty for his family and friends. Dark forces fueling atypical teenage angst and rage in Ty at his family and friends make it seem like he is having one gigantic and dangerous temper tantrum. Although this may be distracting to some readers, I urge you to bear with it because the end of this book makes it all worth while!! And the flow in and out of the adventures of the other characters between Ty's interludes with his family and friends helped smooth out my Ty frustration!

We are introduced to a new, maybe not so mysterious, character named Jair traveling with a pair of tinkers named Zamora and Tamel. The three travelers will face many dangers along the way and make many new friends as they fight to stay alive, protect and save the people in the small communities they travel through. Luckily Jair just happens to be traveling with some black clothing, a black stallion and a pair of beautiful dragon swords!!!

I'm struggling with this eview...I loved the first book and really liked the second.. the good: complex enough plot with well developed characters that don't morph into random people based on what's expedient.. a failure imho of many series. The characters are unique and im invested in seeing them beset by challenges.. fail and/or overcome. Fantastic detailed descriptions of the cast,, settings, creatures, fight scenes etc. The bad : ugh why do sooo many stories have to follow the thoroughly beaten dead horse fantasy trope of the hero journey.?. I think I learned its flow in high school. End result.. a bit predictable.. not the individual sequences.. the overall journey. I could give a long winded explanation but really it's this. If you read the first and enjoyed it your almost sure to like the second.. both are quality at least to my bias. Within that same bias I can identify some flaws but overall it's an A-

When I read first book in this series, The White Tower, I found it slow going at first as the author was introducing this new world but then the story took off and never looked back. At no time did I find Plague of Shadows slow going. The writing seems to flow effortlessly, the story is fast paced, action packed, great heroes and so much more. I love this new world. While the first book was really good, this one was so much better. Possibly because I knew the characters and the world and there were few torture scenes. While there are the classic good vs evil characters, there are also morally ambiguous characters which give the cast of characters a greater depth. I think Michael Wisehart really found his stride.

I discovered Michael Wisehart when I was scrolling through available books for another author and his books were listed as a 'sponsored. I am now a huge fan. I had previously read the first book, The White Tower as well as the two Street Rats of Aramoor novels and had been waiting, semi-patiently, for Plague of Shadows to be published. I was lucky enough to receive a review copy so I was able to read it before it was available. It was so good I also purchased it as soon as it was available. I also purchased the Street Rats of Aramoor from Audible to listen to when my husband and I did some traveling this summer. The narrator was excellent and my husband is now a big fan as well.

Its really important to read all the books, including the Street Rats of Aramoor so that you have a full understanding of the characters. And its a good idea to get the maps which have been so painstaking executed. Michael Wisehart pays enormous attention to detail and it shows.

Very well written, you can visualise the characters in your head, and also their surroundings.
Some of the characters you actually want to survive and other make you really dislike them, I can't wait for book 3 to arrive in a few days time!

I loved the first book in this series, which I got through Audible. I was a little concerned that with such a hard act to follow this book would fall short. It didn't! The adventure continues and is so well told I didn't want to put it down. I was furtunate enough to receive an advance reader copy, and can't wait until the audiobook is released in a week so I can visit Aramoor again as Tim Gerard Reynolds brings it to life for me whilst Im at work.

In short: read the first, get hooked, and then do yourself the favour of reading this. You'll be glad you did, and can thank me later...

I struggled with this one a bit especially Ty's story arc, surely there is only so many times that an author can play off of a characters naivete? I realise as a reader that you are seeing the bigger picture but "the book" twist is so obvious that it's hard to believe he couldn't see it! The Dakaran story arc is like Gladiator but we will see how that eventually plays out. If anything this book, similarly to the first seems more about Ayrion & Ferrin & certainly they both get the more exciting story arc, let's face it Ty is given a "mission" at the end of Book1 & by the end of Book2 he has done nothing about it!
I've bought Book 3 but if I thought that this went beyond Book4 I don't think that I would have, if that makes sense?
