- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is an adorable children’s storybook about Bill and his friend Pablo, a toy polar bear who tells delightful bedtime stories. Rich in imagination and wonder, this book and the stories within it are engaging and heartwarming, delivering very positive messages about friendship, family and behaviour.
Bill is a nice kid who belongs to an average family. Rather than portraying him as an ideal child, the author has made him relatable to other kids: he has disappointments, fights with his sister, and has moments of selfishness. Overall, though, Bill is a good model for kids in the way these situations are resolved.
Pablo’s stories also present opportunities to discuss highly relevant global issues such as conservation, environment, climate change and animal welfare with children in sensitive and proactive ways.
As someone who loves books, polar bears and Canada, I appreciate the beautiful storytelling and the messages of the stories in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this before I gave it to my 9 year old grand niece to get a sense of it so this is a double handed review if you like. For my part I am not the target reader but I found it quite delightful. I would happily recommend this for children of a similar age. As for my grand niece, she was not overflowing with commentary as is her nature but she read it in two sittings. Now she is an avid reader but it tells me that when she said it was 'great' I am inclined to believe her. When I asked her to give me a star rating out of 5 she answered without hesitation so here you are % stars. Great little book.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGreat book for children!
I think most children under eleven will love this book. Although, I'm quite a bit *cough* older than 11 and I enjoyed it. :-) It's well-written, the characters are charming, and the stories entertaining. Some of the words are a little difficult, but should be fine for the older ages. While it's definitely engaging and a fun read, it also has a few life lessons that the older kids will pick up on. I definitely plan to read this with my nieces and nephews.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA lovely, magical tale that will get children's imaginations going. My son now sits his toy monkey next to him (in lieu of a bear) when we read together, so that it can learn stories to pass on. He then tells me that Monkey has told him a story. It is organised into chapters that work as stand-alone stories, so the child can go straight to their favourite story. It is beautifully written and very appealing.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2018Format: KindleBill came alive instantly with the snoring bear. Of course, he would suspect his sister of hiding to play a trick on him. It’s what sisters do! The two youngsters in my life are brother and sister, and he recognised her in Emily and read on with great glee. She started reading to object to this idea and became so hooked into the stories she forgot her motive and enjoyed them.
Schools tend to buy books with that include “lessons”: racial tolerance and equality for example – that come over as boring lectures. Pablo the Storytelling Bear’s messages that validate good manners and behaviour are subtle, and therefore effective.
The subject of endangered species is close to my heart, and I was delighted to find The Enormous Bear Rescue, which describes how they are protected even when they invade towns and represent danger, and the stories follow on with Bill asking his bear how he could help.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2018Format: KindleI have neither young children nor grandchildren in my life, however, as a parent, reader and writer I feel qualified to give a balanced review of this book.
The author has used her talents to great effect in what appears to be a simple children’s storybook. Within the stories are subtle lessons on life and the world around us. Good manners, discipline, respect, and an insight into how we can help play a useful part in ecology are all included.
Perhaps an obvious area which might be easily missed is the introduction of reading and storytelling as a good habit for younger children. Storytelling has been around as long as humankind in their most base form, but it remains the foundation of education. The use of an endangered species as the vehicle for the stories is perfect casting.
If you have young children, here is an author who educates without the need to lecture.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhether children are reading this book on their own or having it read to them, they will enjoy the tales found inside. Pablo is a special toy, a bear who tells stories. The stories are fun and also teach children a bit about animals. The author did a wonderful job bringing the tales to life. Because the book really contains several tales, it is also a great tool for bedtime to help children fall into wonderful dreams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another charming and magical children's book that will bring smiles and chuckles to your little ones ...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving already read a couple of Penny Luker’s previous books it was no surprise to find this latest offering too had its own touch of friendly magic about it. When a little boy gets a different birthday present from the one he wanted his disappointment is short-lived when he discovers that his present is a magical storytelling talking teddy bear. The book is divided into seven bite-sized chapters which although flowing quite seamlessly from one to the next, each tells a different story thus making them perfect for the classic five minute bedtime story for younger children, saving the next one for another night, though slightly older children say seven up to ten or eleven might well want to read them all in one go. Running through the stories there are little snippets of advice for children relating to being kind and thinking of others that I suspect are more likely to be taken on-board coming from a talking teddy bear than if they came from an adult. There’s also a gentle exploration of wider issues that slightly older children may pick up on and ask questions about such as a subtle reference to climate change and how it’s affecting the polar bears.
If I had but one minor criticism it’s that with a children’s book I would have preferred a physical copy rather than just the Kindle edition, especially when it’s for a child under seven but apart from that this was a lovely book to read with my grandson and I’m pleased to say most of the author’s other children’s books are indeed available in print formats.
Overall I would say Penny Luker has set just the right tone in style and vocabulary for a younger readership in producing a book that entertains them in a safe and gentle manner while at the same time adding just enough detail and subtle wider references that will intrigue children who are ready to start reading independently and old enough to pick up those subtleties that pre-school little ones will happily be oblivious to. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSuch a sweet story, that my 6 year old enjoyed very much. It’s the first children’s book I have brought on my kindle. I was very surprised that there were a few illustrations, I wasn’t expecting them.
The story has a lovely meaning and in some way teaches lessons along the way.
