What if art could come alive and guide you home? Twelve-year-old foster child Nova longs to find her one true home. When jealousy of her art ability upends her most cherished placement, Nova’s dropped in the middle of nowhere to live with painter Mr. Russell in his ramshackle farmhouse. While exploring, Nova sneaks into the attic and discovers a magical easel that brings paintings to life. She puts her art skills to the test and gets caught in a whirlwind adventure, complete with rainbow butterflies, a devious leprechaun, and a journey to the rainforest. Following the magic, Nova stumbles upon an underground cellar that houses a startling secret. She’s forced to choose: escape to a prior foster home, or mend her relationship with Mr. Russell. Nova makes a dangerous mistake when she strikes a match of revenge. She must survive the inferno to learn the true meaning of home.

This book absolutely captivated me. I was entranced from the moment I turned the first pages. Nova's progression throughout this book made me eager to continue reading. She was entranced by all the wonder of nature surrounding her and the beauty in life. The imagery in the book transformed me to picture each day as she experienced it reveling in awe and delight. Her character developed even more in sharing time with Mr. Russell and learning about each other. I was sad for this beautiful experience to end and have to say good-bye to these characters. I would love to see a second book that would continue their story.

This is a beautiful book about loss and grieving, found family and healing, the power and passion of art, infused with a touch of magic. Written in a vividly descriptive style, it has the feel of a modern-day classic. Nova is an endearing new protagonist and my heart went out to her throughout her adventures. The writing was emotionally charged, allowing the reader true insight into her character and motivations.

Her neighbor and new pal, Mac, is a delightful side character - one I would love to be friends. Mr. Russell is written in a nuanced and sensitive, and the reader is rooting for him to find his happiness, just as they are rooting for Nova to find her.

The magical elements are gorgeously written and will be sure to spark the imagination of young readers. I can't wait to see what Weber writes next!

Nova "had me from hello." I have foster to adopt kids in my extended family, and these stories always grab at my heartstrings. What big things some of them have to overcome! So I was immediately empathetic with Nova's escape attempt. She was taking ownership of her own story.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), she was busted and proceeded to be moved to a new guardian.
James Russell and his run-down home did not give off the best first impression. So who could blame Nova for her second escape attempt?

The story unfolds slowly and layers and layers of unsaid things are peeled away from both Nova and Mr. Russell. Both have to learn trust and forgiveness. A common bond over art helps them both to heal and to learn how to let go of past grief and hurt. The power of art and imagination to heal the soul takes on a truly magical quality in the story, but speaks truth into our real lives at the same time.

Rebecca Weber has a great way of writing that makes it so you can picture what is going on! I read this book, thinking it would be for kids. And middle school age children will enjoy it, but so did I! I really got into Nova's life and wondered what would be next for her. The illustrations by Sarah Doughty added to the enjoyment of the book. I would encourage anyone to read this book. You will find that it is not only art that comes alive in this book! Your imagination will as well!

A beautifully written, gentle read featuring found family, mystery, and adventure. Nova's journey to feeling like she belongs strengthens when she realizes she's not the only one who might need help and understanding. The poetic prose and strong voice was captivating, and I thoroughly loved every page.
