[It's] more than memoir; it is a journey into cultural discovery and an adventure about taking risks. The portrayal of Greek life and love has left me looking forward to more works in this series to find out where life takes Alex and Peter next.

As always, I was excited when I heard Peter Barber had written another book in his Parthenon Series. Like his other books, ‘The Parthenon Paradox, Rivers of Redemption’ is a wonderful read, which is no surprise! I loved reading more in depth of Peter and Alex’s adventures together, but also of their village. That being said, Peter has a way of telling a story which makes me feel that I am there and taking it all in. He makes his stories and those in them come alive. And this does not waver throughout. This book continues to give a sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, and always an authenticity to life living in a Greek village. From kindness, to Greek bureaucracy, the good and not so good of humanity, and the forces of nature, The Parthenon Paradox keeps a reader engaged. In this particular book, I found myself seeing a side of Greece that I have never experienced while visiting Greece. The side that is not sunny weather and warm beaches. I read about the side of Greece that the locals see and live, the reality, the trials and difficulties. But while reading the book, even in some of the darkest hours that Peter, Alex and those around them experienced, I see hope and optimism that the sunny weather and beautiful days will be back in all their glory. This hope and optimism gets them all through the trying times. Above all, I feel through Peter‘s writings, his love for Greece, love for life, and especially his love for Alex keeps him grounded. A truly remarkable book.

I have loved all of Peter Barber's excellent Parthenon books, but this latest was my favorite. Every book whisks me away to one of my favorite places on earth, Greece. But in this book, I rode the emotional roller coaster with Peter and his gorgeous and beloved wife, Alex, as they dealt with a difficult neighbor, the confusing and frustrating Greek legal system (and well deserved love and support from everyone else) and a devastating flood that wreaked havoc over their home and gardens that they had poured their hearts and souls into. Peter's narrative style is a joy to read and I will look forward to more Greek adventures with Peter and Alex in Greece. Highly recommended.

Peter Barber's The Parthenon Paradox is very descriptive and thoroughly enjoyable while revisting Greece with him and his wife, Alex. In this third book, they weather both the storms of life and the actual weather patterns which wreak havoc on their lovely home. As he said, this one reads like a thriller, a mystery and a narrative all in one as the reader scrolls quickly forward to see how the drama will end. Thankfully, it does!

Anxiously awaited release of Peter’s latest title and as usual it didn’t disappoint. The Parthenon Paradox Rivers of Redemption is a meshing of travel adventure, Greek Tragedy (in the sense of historic flooding), the intense resolve of a family to rebuild and insight into the amazing Greek people…friends and strangers who put their own needs aside and came together to help Peter and his wife Alex during a truly difficult time. Peter’s descriptions and the images he has painted of life in Pefki, make you want to run to the internet and book a vacation to this wonderful place.

This was the book Peter HAD to write. A few days after the launch party for A Parthenon in Pefki, the village was hit by a storm of biblical proportions. The damage was unbelievable, and Peter and Alex feared they had lost their beautiful home.
This is a story of wickedness, pure generosity, and love. But it's not a fairytale. (Although a wicked witch and some good fairies are involved). It's all unbelievably true. Battling Greek bureaucracy is not for the faint-hearted, and Alex and Peter have a real fight on their hands. But through everything, their humor, faith, and above all, their love for each other shines out like a beacon. And the sense of community and their love for their Greek village is real. I loved this book. Really, really, loved it. Peter's words got into my mind and my heart. It's a very powerful book, and is a book that will stay with me for a long time. I honestly think this is the best thing Peter has written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whilst immersing the reader in Greece this book carries a general message for all readers.

This amazing and beautifully written memoir is a true account of what becomes a vendetta arising during a traumatic flood disaster overwhelming the British author and his Greek wife, who were at their wit’s end before they were spitefully targeted by a local villager. The couple’s masterful response to the unrelenting pressures heaped upon them - at one point it feels as these bullets are being fired from every direction, the storms, the floods, the authorities, the police even other villagers gives an insight into human tolerance and the huge strength of character shown by the innocent couple, who do rise again from the raging and muddy waters to revive their treasured seaside home against all the odds. Throughout it all the unique beauty and character of Greece and the Greeks shines through whilst highlighting the joys and pitfalls of building a home in Greece. I felt I was there at every amazing taverna meal, in wellies squelching through the mud, sitting in the sunshine sipping coffee or an ouzo and really able to visualise the village and its environment.
Reading this account some might be tempted to say you couldn’t make it up but the Greek paradise’s restoration is in no small part due to the kindness of friends, neighbours and villagers who demonstrate the age old tradition of filoxenia, befriending and caring for the comers in who made their home in this quiet area of Northern Evia.
The book is adventure, thriller, even romance, a family story which can move one to tears, but above all is the ability to see beyond which fully endorses this writer’s skill with words.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful book by Peter Barber

I have thoroughly immersed myself in all of Peter's books, and I sincerely hope that he continues to share his captivating experiences that unfold between Pefki, Glyfada, and England. Each of his works has resonated with me deeply, and this particular book is no exception. Peter's subtle and clever English humour effortlessly reflects through even the most challenging circumstances he recounts, making for both entertaining and relatable reading.

What stands out in his writing is the profound love and admiration he holds for his wife, Alex. It permeates every page, revealing the strength of their bond. Additionally, his affection for Greece and its enchanting people is palpable, weaving a rich tapestry of culture and life that invites readers to understand the essence of this beautiful country.

For anyone eager to discover the true heart of Greece, I strongly encourage you to delve into Peter's books. They offer not just narratives but a gateway to the sights, sounds, and experiences that define Greek life. If you seek a healthy dose of British humour, look no further—Peter's wit shines brightly throughout his storytelling.

Moreover, his insights into community life in Greece are particularly enlightening. He portrays the generosity of people who may have little but willingly share what they possess, embodying the spirit of true hospitality. Each book is beautifully written, blending delight with profound insights that linger long after the last page is turned.

Let's hold on to the hope that Peter continues to write about his enriching life alongside Alex and the remarkable individuals who surround them. This is precisely the vibrant Greece we have come to know and cherish since our own move here, and I wouldn't want to miss out on any of the stories yet to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a powerful memoir, the best book in the series.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 24, 2025
After the humour in the first two books in the series, now disaster strikes. Will their life in Greece ever return to normal again?

I can highly recommend the whole series-but if you haven't already read the previous two books, he keeps you up to date with some of the happenings in those-or it's good for a memory jog if some time has passed since you read the other books.

Peter and his wife Alex-theirs is a magical love story: Meeting at just 16 and 15, then not seeing each other for a long time, until a chance meeting again years later. Meant to be.

The book is quick, easy reading, and so well-told.  There's been lots of humour in the first two books-but now they have some harder times to face. This was edge of your seat reading, with terrifying circumstances, and so many difficulties they came up against, trying to protect their property.

It really is an excellent book.  There's so much in it; so many hurdles they have to overcome. What a powerful memoir, for me, the best in this series.

    An absolutely cracking read.

5.0 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Masterpiece of Humour, Heart, and Greek Chaos!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 12, 2025
Peter Barber has done it again! The Parthenon Paradox: Rivers of Redemption is a brilliant mix of humour, drama, and the rich, unpredictable charm of life in Greece. From the first page, I was completely hooked. Laughing out loud one moment and feeling the weight of real-life struggles the next.
The story follows Peter and Alex as their idyllic Greek life is turned upside down by a devastating flood. Just as they start to rebuild, a bitter neighbour, Nemesis (aptly named!), throws them into a whirlwind of legal battles, village gossip, and absurd bureaucracy. But through all the madness, the kindness of the Greek community shines through, proving that resilience and love can conquer even the worst disasters.
Barber’s storytelling is second to none, witty, heartfelt, and so vividly descriptive that I felt like I was right there with them, wading through the mud and navigating village politics. His ability to find humour in the chaos of life is a true gift, and his reflections on forgiveness and redemption add a depth that makes this book truly special.
A must-read for anyone who loves memoirs, travel, or just a fantastic, feel-good story. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A heck of a story steeped in Hellenic life
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2025
I love reading books about life in Greece and the Parthenon Series is up there with the best. I think this third volume is Peter Barber’s aristoúrgima (masterpiece), but I hope there will be many more to come.

You don’t have to read the first two books in the series to enjoy this one, but I’d recommend you do as they set the scenes and add depth to the players in this third, fabulous story.

From storm to tempest the opening pages grab the attention with devastation and jeopardy, before flashing back to what led Peter and Alex to move to their Greek idyll; with unequivocal examples of the true impact of climate change.

The immense gravitational pull of soulmates across time and space is coupled with further accounts of Alex’s essence of philoxenia (love of strangers).

I shared their frustration in how broad-sweep bureaucracy can ignore the intrinsic needs of a community. But, the support for Peter and Alex from their friends and neighbours actually had me in tears of joy.

I felt the way in which Greece has permeated Peter’s soul, awakening a new level of sociability way beyond the British norm; focusing true priorities and perspective.

And, how Peter overcame considerable challenges, in both languages, to become such an engaging writer and communicator.

At the core of it all is his fabulous sense of humour and the joyous force of nature that is his wife, Alex - along with their commendable strength of character.

I would say more, but it risks spoilers and believe you me it’s a heck of a story steeped in Hellenic life.
