Bernard Cornwell
459 A.D. Arthur has the kingdom he fought so hard to gain.
But keeping it – and his family – safe, proves to be even harder.
Two enemies threaten everything that is dear to him:
Winifred, his vindictive first wife, and Morgause, priestess of the Mother and malevolent Queen of the North.
In this story of harsh battles, treasonous plots, and the intrigues of political upheaval during Britain’s Dark Ages
we do not have the familiar tales of the Arthurian legend,
but one much older, darker and deeper.
The story of a man with ambition, determination and human flaws.
The story of King Arthur as it might have really happened.
The Kingmaking: Book One
Pendragon’s Banner: Book Two
Shadow of the King: Book Three
The Boy: Who became a Man
Who became a King:
Who became a Legend... KING ARTHUR
There is no Merlin, no sword in the stone, and no Lancelot.
Instead, the man who became our most enduring hero

AMAZON READERS' COMMENTS
"Spell-binding, magnificent, gutsy, heartbreaking, raw with bloodshed, triumphant! Helen Hollick's Arthurian trilogy quickly draws you into the world of legend. No genteel fairy tale story of Camelot, this! Gutsy, sweaty, and real. The Dark Ages brought vividly, to life! This is the legend I want to believe in."
"In this version of the King Arthur story, Arthur is a dark hero. He is young, selfish, ambitious and callous. He makes decisions based on his own desires with little thought to future consequences, making enemies left and right. Yet Ms. Hollick does a fabulous job of letting the reader glimpse just enough of his fears and vulnerabilities to keep him from being unlikeable, and to sway the reader to root for his success. I thoroughly enjoyed the portrayal of Gwenhwyfar. She is a worthy heroine. Full of heart pounding action, troubled heroes, wicked villains, violence, betrayal and, of course, true love, this well-written book is an intense read and a real page-turner."
"Helen Hollick brings her multi-layered, complex characters to life on the page. I especially enjoyed her depiction of the feisty, independent Gwenhwyfar - who is somewhat of a warrior in her own right. Ms. Hollick's interpretations of the Sacred Stone, The Lady of the Lake, Stonehenge, etc., are really original."
"Arthur is at times very unlikeable: no modern man in fancy dress here, but a man of his time - and that time was brutal. As for Gwenhwyfar... a brilliant heroine, at times strong, at times horribly vulnerable. Their relationship is compelling and feels true"
"What a story! I fell in love with Arthur from the start, a flesh and blood hero with flaws. [This] wonderful trilogy doesn't rely on unnecessary padding, the descriptions are heart rending. Here is a writer in the older style not ' jump on the bandwagon writing!' Read and enjoy..."

ABOUT HELEN HOLLICK
Known for her captivating storytelling and rich attention to historical detail, Helen’s historical fiction, nautical adventure series, cosy mysteries – and her short stories – skilfully invite readers to step into worlds where the boundaries between fiction and history blend together.
Her historical fiction spans a variety of periods, with a particular focus on the ‘Dark Ages’ and the Early Medieval period. Works like The Pendragon's Banner series offer vivid portrayals of both historical events and the fantastical elements that shape them. Her gift lies in her ability to bring historical figures and settings to life, while in her Sea Witch Voyages, she subtly weaves in elements of magic, myth, and hauntings, creating an immersive experience that transports readers to a time when the people of the past might very well walk among the living.
In addition to her historical fiction, Helen has written several short stories, further exploring themes of historical adventure or the supernatural with her signature style.
Whether dealing with the echoes of the past or the weight of lost souls, her stories are as compelling as they are convincing. Through her work, she invites readers into a world where the past never truly lets us go.
Helen started writing as a teenager, but after discovering a passion for history, was published in 1993 in the UK with her Arthurian Pendragon’s Banner Trilogy and two Anglo-Saxon novels about the events that led to the 1066 Battle of Hastings, one of which, The Forever Queen (USA title – A Hollow Crown in the UK) became a USA Today best-seller. Her Sea Witch Voyages are nautical-based adventures inspired by the Golden Age of Piracy. She also writes the Jan Christopher cosy mystery series set during the 1970s, and based around her, sometimes hilarious, years of working as a North London library assistant. Her 2025 release is Ghost Encounters, a book about the ghosts of North Devon.
Helen, husband Ron and daughter Kathy moved from London to Devon in January 2013 after a Lottery win on the opening night of the London Olympics, 2012. She spends her time glowering at the overgrown garden and orchard, fending off the geese, helping with the horses and wishing the friendly, resident ghosts would occasionally help with the housework...

5.0 out of 5 stars More of the same!
It’s hard to review the second book in a trilogy when all you want to say is more of the same! I loved Pendragon’s Banner, and as with the first book was swept along by the story telling and characters. This Arthur is no parfit gentil knight; he’s a man of war and as such he is perfectly capable of committing atrocities and hiding behind the time-honoured excuse that war makes them necessary. He is often brutal in his personal relations too. I don’t like or admire him, but the author has done a brilliant job of making me want to understand him. Whatever else Arthur is, he is not one-dimensional: there’s love and loss too, and his relationship with Gwenhyfar is complex – especially as she is no mere shadow. The versatile writing reflects these paradoxes in the skilful handling of scenes ranging from the horror of battle to the beauty of the landscape.
After a bit of an enforced wait, I’m about to start the third book in this series and can’t wait to get back to it.
Disclosure: the author is known to me (we are both SilverWood authors) but this is my honest opinion of this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent historical fiction
The first book in Ms Hollick's trilogy about the real King Arthur of post-Roman Britain made wonderful reading, this second book is as good if not better. Real historical details combined with page-turning action, political intrigue, battles and romance - this novel has it all. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A passionate retelling of the story of King Arthur and Guinevere
I was completely gripped by Helen Hollick's retelling of the legend of King Arthur. Not for her the romanticised version of the old story books. She paints Arthur as the ambitious, violent and passionate man of his time, who despite his shortcomings is an exciting and worthy hero. And Guinevere too, is not the regal queen we have come to know. Again, reality takes hold and we see how hard life was for women in the 5th century. This is a beautifully written book which I could not put down and will definitely read the rest of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, spellbinding read
I devoured rather than read this amazing trilogy about the life of Arthur Pendragon. Set in Dark Age Britain, following the withdrawal of Rome, the story tells of one man's bid to unite and hold a crumbling Romano-British society whose problems include inter-tribal rivalry, invasion, sea raids and settlers hungry for land. Helen Hollick weaves a brilliant, gritty story peopled with characters that come alive on the page. Arthur is charismatic, yet flawed. Gwenhwyfar, his wife, a feisty, capable and honourable woman. I found myself living in their world, caught up in their joys and sorrows. Painstakingly reasearched and well-plotted, Hollick delivers a believable and spellbinding tale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pendragon’s Banner
A very exciting story with either Arthur, Gwen or their children facing death. It shows the ruthlessness and sheer venom in which these people
Live every day.. Such cruelty. They were lucky if their children reached the age of five. Arthur had left women and illigitimate children and wherever he lived. He was treated despicably as a child and spent his adult life wanting to kill Morguase and in the end. Gwen did it for him. I will read the trilogy aagain
