PENITENCE: An Andi Comstock Supernatural Mystery, Book 2 (95,893 words) (Andi Comstock Supernatural Mysteries) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

Where there’s smoke...

Andi Comstock has grown used to smelling the smoke that pervades her office every time a cremation takes place in the mortuary next door. She even enjoys the moment or two when each soul stops to chat with her on the way to the Pearly Gates.

But one day, a Smokie utters a confession that leads her to believe he may be headed in the other direction. I did something bad, Andi, and I don’t know how to fix it.

Sometimes, it means murder...

Andi isn’t the type of person who can let a plea for help go unanswered. Her sleuthing cohort Father Riley sometimes compares her to St. Jeanne d’Arc, fighting battles on behalf of others.

Andi’s no saint, but neither is she a coward. When someone–dead or not–asks for help, she can’t just walk away. Not even if it means putting her own life on the line.

Ann Simas lives in Oregon, but she is a Colorado girl at heart, having grown up in the Rocky Mountains. She has been an avid reader since childhood and penned her first fiction "book" in high school. She particularly likes to write mystery/suspense/thriller with a love story and paranormal or supernatural elements. She is a three-time RWA Golden Heart Finalist. Simas currently has 42 books in print. All are available in both paperback and in ebook format.

An award-winning watercolorist and a budding photographer, Ann also enjoys needlework and gardening in her spare time. She is her family's "genealogist" and has been blessed with the opportunity to conduct first-hand research in Italy for both her writing and her family tree. The genealogy research from decade's old documents in Italian, she says, has been a supreme but gratifying challenge.

Andi Comstock is a gaming creator at Orion’s Belt. Not only that, but she can also see dead people. Not just any kind of dead people, just those who were cremated across the street at the Crematorium. They like to say hi to her on their way to the afterlife. She’s also audio graphic, she’d able to remember everything she hears verbatim. When Clem Naylor stops by he says “he did something bad and he’s not able to fix it.” When Andi learns what it is she asks for help from Father Riley and Detective Jack Harman (her boyfriend) to help her right this wrong.

This was a very enjoyable book. I’ve read other books by Ann Simas and enjoyed those as well. In this book you have a well thought out and written plot, great characters, and humor. I like the idea of the dead saying hello and talking to Andi before they depart, also how the dead are referred to as “smokies”. To funny. This story will keep you interested, have you laughing, and will be remembered long after you read the last page.

Penitence was a fantastic book. This is the second book in the Andi Comstock supernatural mystery series, and it does not disappoint. I thought this book was thrilling and even more in depth than the first one. The characters become more detailed, and their personalities are brought out more with every challenge. I definitely recommend this book, as well as the first in the series, and can't wait for another.

Andi hears from the dead that are cremated on the same block as where she works. Sometimes it's just listening to them as they cross over, other times she has to figure out how to stop something devastating. The ghosts aren't always forthcoming though, and that makes her job more difficult. Even with a cop for a boyfriend, she's not good at staying out of her fair share of trouble, but she knows she's the only one who can hear these people and their troubles.

First, I want to thank Ann Simas for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.
Penitence by Ann Simas is not the type of book I am used to reading from her to be honest. I usually read her Christmas books once a year. I really liked those books so I figured I would try this book out. Boy, was this a totally different genre and side of her that I am used to reading. I stepped out of my comfort zone and gave it a shot. It was an interesting short read for me.
I liked the dedication and how this book is for everyone who believes in an Afterlife, or who wants to believe.
Penitence would be considered under the paranormal genre. However, I enjoyed this book for its mystery and crime solving aspect of the book.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I love reading cozy mysteries and the addition of the paranormal element was wonderful!

Andi Comstock is a normal young woman who is a whiz at computer coding. In her job at Orion's Belt, she is developing a game called Wild Hare. Only thing is, there is a crematorium on the same block. And, for some reason, when people are cremated there, they make one final visit to Andi in the form of smoke. Hence, the name she calls them: Smokies.

I won't go into details of the story, but I will say that it is well written and enjoyable. Great characters and character development, great deductive reasoning that you expect from a cozy and the obligatory police detective boyfriend provide what I expect from this type of book. Add in complicated relationships between characters, a kindly Catholic priest and the normal trouble that an amateur sleuth gets into trying to solve the mystery and you have the perfect cozy!

If you enjoy your cozy mysteries with a bit of the supernatural, you can't got wrong with this one. Ms. Simas is a very good writer and she does a great job with this book. I will definitely be reading more by her! I was given the chance to read this book by a review group and chose to review it.

The Andi Comstock Supernatural Mystery series continues with PENITENCE by the talented writer, Ann Simas. This is a great, easy and fast paced read. Andi is back talking with the dead. This book is about an unnerving conversation with someone who recently died about what he has planned for his spouse. This book is full of intrigue, suspense with some sex thrown in for interest. It has a great outcome but that leaves you in suspense right up until the end. Highly recommend for a great summer read. Can't wait for the next in the Andi Comstock series.

This is not my usual favorite genre of books. But I had to keep reminding my self of that. I kept finding myself really enjoying this book. Really! A ghost story? There were many things different than usual. I loved the sensitive handling of the way the ghosts presented themselves and their general accepting attitude. This made the distress of story's unhappy ghost something you wanted the heroine to help fix. The upbeat attitude of the story made it a pleasure to read.

Not into the supernatural but love mystery? This might be the book that tips you into appreciating a supernatural element or two. Andi's psychic skills are new to her, but those around her view her skills as a gift from God or a surefire trip to trouble.

Andi's boyfriend Jack works for the police but Andi has the hotline to the latest crimes. This isn't a who-dunnit that you can easily peg the killer in the first chapter. There was so much information that came at me about the crime that at times I was as confused as Andi. But Andi is a tenacious character who takes what she learns and uses it to save the world. You won't be bored with the facts or disappointed with a short quick mystery. Ann Simas writes a long involved novel with interesting supporting characters to help Andi protect the people she loves.

I received a free copy of this book for my review.

5.0 out of 5 stars The evasive ghost and the hitman
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 11, 2019
Another great read in the series with a plot centred around a ghost who is evasive to the point that no-one really knows what the truth is except that he has hired a hitman to kill his wife. Although I must admit that I did guess part of the solution even though I didn't get the motive. Loved the characters especially the Father who in no way resembles any priest I have ever know. His quips and observations lighten the dialogue immensely.
The game is going well, as is her new relationship, plus she has more or less recovered from the murderous dentist. However her peace is shattered by a ghost that laments the fact that he cannot stop what he has set in motion. A contract out on his wife! Add in evasive answers when she tries to question him, a double homicide, a new partnership, lies from his wife and attempts to murder her. Can she work through the maze of lies, deceit and evasions from all concerned to find the truth and stop more killings? Or will she be a victim?

Full of mystery and suspense. I had no clue what was going to happen. I love the fact that this author always keeps you on your toes by trying to guess what is going to happen in her books. Not that you could guess in a million years. Fantastic book!
