I'm usually weary with books of this genre (Gamelit/LitRPG) as their quality seems to be all over the place. It's often hard to find the that elusive true gem of out of 100 other mid-to-low bar titles. Permadeath: A Gamelit Thriller is precisely that gem, one that should be read by anyone, not just fans of the genre.

If I had to sum up this book, I'd say it's a fast-moving thriller, that explores the dangerous consequences that can be made manifest if current-day technology is taken to its logical extremes.

If you like Black Mirror, you'll like this for sure, although I think the book is more hopeful with its message and ultimate philosophical stance than most episodes of BM tend to be. The story even presents a particular worldview which, even though it certainly borrows from great thinkers (The book quotes Nietzsche in its epigraph), it nonetheless packages it in a fairly original way.

Characters are very well written, the protagonist and the second main character are utterly believable. They change in interesting ways through the book, and they never seem out of place, or awkward, or forced. The ensemble cast of friends and foes add a lot of color and depth to an already engaging plot line.

I don't want to spoil anything (I'd really be doing you a disservice if I did), but basically a struggling video game streamer receives an invitation to participate in a deadly online game, with far-reaching consequences.

Do yourself a favor and check this one out!

This book hooked me from the start with its tense action and incredibly immersive in-game world—the level of detail made it feel like I was right there with the characters. The protagonist, Marcus, is a deeply sympathetic character, and his internal struggles and moral dilemmas gave the story real depth, making him more than just another hero in a high-stakes game.

Despite the dark themes, there’s an underlying sense of optimism that kept me engaged, balancing the more intense moments perfectly. My only hesitation was the way the main characters’ relationship developed—it leaned heavily on a trauma bond, which didn’t fully work for me as a romantic arc.

Overall, this is a must-read for fans of Ready Player One and Black Mirror. If you love high-stakes virtual worlds with strong ethical dilemmas, you’ll be hooked.

Wow! I’ll be honest, I was not expecting to like this book 😂 a friend had asked me to read this ARC with her and I thought “why not”.

Now, I am not a gamer AT ALL and this is a book about gamers. The only video games I play are Just Dance and MarioKart. So let me tell you this, you do not need to be a gamer to read this book. There were a lot of gamer moments and terminology that confused me but they didn’t take away from the plot, I would just google if I really wanted to know 😂

There were a few inconsistencies and things that didn’t quite add up. The writing at first wasn’t my favourite but as we got into the plot then it got better.

The last half of the book had me gripping the pages. The ending had me speechless. I think I stopped breathing at one point. I definitely cried, but then again I’ve been doing that a lot lately so who knows what that is about. I definitely recommend reading this one.
