About the author

Catherine Kullmann was born and educated in Dublin. Following a three-year courtship conducted mostly by letter, she moved to Germany where she lived for twenty-five years before returning to Ireland. She has worked in the Irish and New Zealand public services and in the private sector. She is married and has three adult sons and two grandchildren.
Catherine has always been interested in the extended Regency period, a time when the foundations of our modern world were laid. She loves writing and is particularly interested in what happens after the first happy end—how life goes on for the protagonists and sometimes catches up with them. Her books are set against a background of the offstage, Napoleonic wars and consider in particular the situation of women trapped in a patriarchal society. She is the author of The Murmur of Masks, short-listed for the 2017 CAP Awards (Carousel Aware Prize for Independent Authors), Perception & Illusion and A Suggestion of Scandal, shortlisted for BooksGoSocial Best Indie Book 2018.
Catherine also blogs about historical facts and trivia related to this era. You can find out more about her books and read her blog (My Scrap Album) at www.catherinekullmann.com

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA characteristic that Catherine Kullman’s writing shares with Jane Austen’s is that her books are not fast-paced reads. By that I mean that there’s not a lot of action but there is a lot of dialogue and descriptive interplay between the characters. For this reader, any time I’m reading dialogue I read a bit slower in order to pick up on the nuance of the words used and the pacing. The amount of dialogue is one of the things that I like best about this author. The dialogue is intelligent, easy to follow, and enhances our understanding of the characters.
Of note in particular to this book, is the nature of the “big misunderstanding” between the romantic leads. A misunderstanding between the two main characters is a familiar trope in romance novels of every type whether it’s historical or modern. Often times I find myself rolling my eyes as to why some particular thing is designated as the misunderstanding in some of the novels that I read. However, in this book the misunderstanding is both realistic in and of itself and the two characters reaction to it is also very realistic. This misunderstanding and the handling of it are probably the best I’ve ever read in terms of being able to relate to the characters and why each of them felt the way that they did, reacted the way that they did, and resolved it the way that they did. For that alone, this book is in my top 10 historical romance reads.
Of the two books I’ve read so far by this author, this one is my favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have enjoyed all the Catherine Kullmann stories I have read, this one included. The aristocratic family of our h, Arabella (Bella), is still reeling from the death of a soldier son; it is particularly awful for Bella’s mother.
When a military man approaches the house, Bella mistakes him for her deceased brother in one wild moment - mistakes do occur, after all - but this is Thomas, with whom Bella has grown up, back from the war. He is the son of the local vicar. His visit to Bella’s home is not just a social call. He comes to express his condolences and to share some details of Bella’s brother’s death.
The result is that Bella’s mom has some of her peace restored, and the family decides to head to London for the season.
Bella sees what a good man Thomas is, and as she is courted and feted by various London beaux, this conviction grows. But how does Thomas feel about her? He certainly isn’t going out of his way to make it known to Bella! And what is it she's looking for in a spouse? These questions preoccupy her, and we are privy to lovely conversations with both mother and father at different points in the book: charming, realistic conversations that get to the nub of what it is one should look for in a life's partner - those enduring, and often elusive - qualities. This is a great strength of the book.
There is a villain of the piece. It is difficult to portray a villain, I acknowledge; my complaint is that he shows up once too often, and the lackluster reaction of the men in Bella’s life does not seem typical of the men of that time.
That dampens my enthusiasm for this story a little bit, but not enough to withhold my recommendation.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHow wonderful to read an author's novel that has no need of the porn so prevalent by most authors today. Ms. Pullman let's her words pull us into her story and keeps us there with her excellent prose. I respected the heroine but fell in love with the hero. When is the next book coming?

- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2023Format: KindleI like how this author gives a happy, unhurried picture of 19th century life. I could do without the villain and the drama enacted by him. I wish that part had been left out. There is something that i like in this author's writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2024Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase...then this one is for you! I love how the author has done her research on everything from clothing to specific dates and locations. The main character is likeable and ends up in some unusual scrapes but nothing out of the ordinary from what happened in actual novels from her time period. If you like Jane Austen, consider reading Catherine Kullmann's "Potential for Love."
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this virtually at one sitting. Ms. Kullmann's characters are always well drawn, and very human. Her descriptions are excellent. The period details are well done; her research is thorough. The plot kept me interested from beginning to end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Catherine Kullmann
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have loved every one of Kullmann’s Regency Romances. She cleverly creates the manners and life of Regency times mostly weaved around the social and emotional upheavals during the Napoleonic Wars. Her characters, male and female, are rich and multilayered and we are drawn into their lives, marriages, loves, tribulations and triumphs. I look forward to any new book to be written by this talented author.

4.0 out of 5 stars A most enjoyable read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe Potential for Love is a most enjoyable and satisfying read and a beautifully written work. It is so much more than just a romance between Arabella Malvin and Thomas Ferraunt. These two characters are so engaging and admirable and I was really drawn to their story right from the beginning. Ms Kullmann’s thorough research comes through everywhere In the novel. She has such a light touch in the descriptions of the London season, musical evenings, the theatre and the fashion of the day. At the same times she writes with such sensitivity about family, friendship and marriage. The scene in Chapter One where Thomas is describing the battle in Belgium to the Malvins and tells them about Arthur’s final resting place is deeply moving.
I would very much recommend the book and look forward to Ms Kullmann’s next work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAnother thrilling story that kept my attention throughout.
The descriptions of the Earl's funeral was fascinating.
The tale of the murders felt a little contrived and with no satisfactory solution despite the capture of the villain.
I'll say no more as I don't wish to spoil it but I have been enchanted by the full series and I'm sorry I've now read them all.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thorough immersion into the Regency world with a thoughtful and lovable heroine
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI always look forward to Ms Kullman’s novels; she is such an accomplished writer. Here, Arabella and Thomas are well-suited although not as instantly or as obviously as you might think. The to-and-fro of their conversations, their changes in circumstances, the family dramas and inter-relationships all weave into a multi-layered story. And then there is a ’smiling villain’ whose personality echoes some people’s behaviour today!
The society Arabella and Thomas inhabit is delicate yet merciless; the least social infraction is punished by small but sharp sanctions. The worst is the ‘cut direct’, akin to social ostracism for the offender. Which brings me to Ms Kullman’s mastery of the world she describes. Her research is impeccable. This is not one of those Regency novels which merely clothes its characters in beautiful dresses and frock coats. We live in the times with its strange manners and activities and a very enjoyable time we have of it.
The other joy of this novel is the careful unfolding of the main relationship and the complexity of the path to love and contentment. If I have a niggle it’s the over abundance of characters. On occasion, I forgot who was whom and who related to whom and in what degree. But I never lost sight of Arabella and Thomas and followed their story to a very satisfactory ending. Highly recommended.
