This was my first read in the series, and I absolutely loved it! The narrative pulled me in from page one, and the combination of historical intrigue and high-stakes action made for a thrilling experience. I’ve already purchased the previous two installments and can’t wait to dive into more of Charlie’s adventures.
If I had one critique, it would be that some of the action sequences felt a bit rushed, leaving me wanting more depth in those moments. However, this didn’t detract from the overall intensity and excitement of the story.
J.J. Carson has crafted a remarkable thriller that blends history, suspense, and a fierce, intelligent heroine. I can’t recommend Pillars of Evil enough—it’s a must-read for fans of action-packed mysteries and archaeological adventures.

What helped me enjoy this was the unpredictable action of plot and the unexpected archeological intelligence of Charlie-- while learning so much, I actually never knew what was going to happen next. Once you think you know, the plot thickens, or flips, and it's wildly entertaining. I think this would be a great movie/TV show too. I highly recommend it to book lovers and thriller fanatics!

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Thriller
I really enjoyed this thriller, where FBI agent Charlie is sent to Afghanistan to investigate missing US government funding and finds herself in a hostile foreign environment. Charlie is self-motivated and persistent, and although most people she encounters in her new environment are unwilling to help her, she finds some allies. There are high stakes, and shocking events unfolding, making the book difficult to put down - highly recommended if you enjoy thrillers.

The story takes place in Afghanistan and Iran, leading to sketchy situations. There is action in every chapter, enough to keep you turning the pages right to the end. I highly recommend grabbing this book!
