About the author

HJ Bellus is a small town girl who loves the art of storytelling. When not making readers laugh or cry, she's a part-time livestock wrangler that can be found in the middle of Idaho, shot gunning a beer while listening to some Miranda Lambert on her Beats and rocking out in her boots.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book drew me in from the very beginning. Young best friends living in a tough neighborhood with negligent parents who rely on each other through pinky promises to get through the days. The two are taken into the foster care program under the supervision of an amazing care worker Miss Tami. She looks out for Baylor and State but can't control that the two kids are separated because State is adopted by a couple and Baylor is not.
Miss Tami ends up taking Baylor in and when she is an adult Miss Tami takes in another foster child with Down Syndrome named Rowe. Through all of the devastating things that have happened in Baylor's life she seems to thrive with the love and support of Miss Tami and the light of their lives Princess Rowe. I love the antics of Princess Rowe. She can brighten anyone's day with her free spirit and sassy comments.
Baylor and State bumped into each other under tense circumstances. Baylor feels that State left her and never tried to find her and protect her like he used to do. The two struggle trying to reconnect after so much time has passed and with the different upbringings getting in their way. State was brought up in an extremely wealthy family while Baylor lived in a modest household. She resents State for the privileged life he has been leading since their separation.
State is excited to reconnect with Miss Tami and Baylor. With the help of Miss Tami, State is able to slowly get in Baylor's good graces along with Princess Rowe.
I recommend you read this book which will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. This book had me go through a gamut of emotions. It is tough to read what types of lives these children lived, without the security of their parents protecting them and looking out for their wellbeing. Follow the journey of Baylor and State and see how it turns out for them. This is a must read!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseBaylor and State both grew up in the bad part of town. State was her best friend but also her protector. Things get worst for them, then one day their worst nightmare happens, State fines a home. Baylor shuts down as a little girl feeling all alone till social worker Miss Tami takes her in and shows her what being love feels like, but she always felt like a part of her was lost when State left her behind. Years pass and Miss Tami adds to their little family, enters the sweet but battered little Rowe. One night at work brings the one person she never thought would come back for her, State. That night brings them full circle but outside interference try's to break them apart but the love they have for each other just maybe to strong for anything to break them and add Rowe to the mix and a family is forms and there is nothing State will do to protect Rowe and Baylor. This story was and amazing read, you may shed a tear or two, feel happiness, heartbreak then the ever strong love these beautiful souls have for their family. I can't say enough good things about this wonderful story about the one's left behind but find their way back, stronger and ready to live their life to the fullest together.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA lovely story of childhood friends who lose each other, only to find each other later and move on to forever.
Fairly well edited.
Baylor and State grew up together in less than ideal circumstances. They were a lifeline for each other, finding refuge when the world was crazy. When they are both orphaned, they are separated. State is adopted by a family and taken away from Baylor. Eventually, Baylor was also adopted by a caring social worker - Miss Tami. Along the way, Miss Tami also adopted Rowe, a young girl with Down's Syndrome. Baylor has had a difficult time growing and adjusting, but has settled into a stable routine. When at work one day, she is shocked to come face to face with her childhood best friend, State. He has grown so much, and is now playing football for the University of Florida. (Boo!) State makes his way back into Baylor's life, and picks up where his heart left off. Together, they face opposition from teammates, disappointed female groupies, and even State's adopted mother. Rowe brings great personality to the mix. State accepts her into his life as readily as he welcomes Baylor back into his life. Will State be able to withstand all the opposition? Will Baylor trust that State is back in her life? Will she believe that she can fit into his new life?
This was a really enjoyable story. State knew what he wanted, both on and off the football field. He moved forward with single-minded purpose. It was those around him that expressed opposition or doubt. In the end, this was quite the satisfying read. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThree chapters into this book and I just KNEW this was going to be my favorite book from this author yet. I have read all of this author’s books and most of them stay on my mind for a long time but this one along with a couple of her others will ALWAYS stay on my mind.
If you love you some hot and lovable football players, you need to meet State!
If you love books with babies, well, Rowe isn’t a baby, but she is a little girl that will steal your heart away!
The beginning of Baylor and State’s story is heartbreaking. They are two best friends who end up being separated. When these two finally reconnected, I could feel it so deeply. One was shocked while the other responded magically.
There are a few bumps and twists in this story. It made me laugh and yes, a few parts made me into a crying mess. I love when an author can write a book in a way that makes me FEEL it! I fell head over heels in love with these characters and this book! This is a book that I will think about and talk about and read again and again! I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow !!!!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a fantastic book, the story just blew me away . I read a lot of book's and it's been a while since I have read one this good and didn't want to put down for anything . This is my first time reading a book from this author but it most certainly won't be the last, I shall be going to look out for any other books she has written . I suggest that you get the tissues ready as there is quite a lot of heartbreak and sadness involved from the outset. Stayton was a great guy and protector who had always looked out for Baylor since they were kids and boy were they made for each other , there was plenty of hot loving going on too. Rowe was a special little girl and so brave and resilient and brought some much needed humour to the story although she had been through her own dreadful trauma (cue the tissues). The thing about this book is that it's happening in our world today so it seemed like real time whilst reading it . I definitely would have liked to give it 10 stars if possible and I couldn't recommend this book enough to everybody, if you read one book this year make it this one , you won't regret it . I recieved an arc for this book but it is 100% my own honest review .
