A Pint of Beer, a Bag of Chips, and Thou Kindle Edition

What's the best gift a young, single man could receive for Christmas? Mohawked punk Liam wouldn't have picked the hideous collection of homemade knitwear he's presented with by his well-meaning mum and aunties. He'd much rather have the gorgeous older man he sees every day while busking at King's Cross station. Liam's been doing his best to seduce the guy with his saxophone playing -- the trouble is, with the holidays coming up, he's beginning to despair of his message getting through.

But with a little Christmas magic in the air, maybe those garish garments will be just the thing for attracting the attention of a silver fox ...

Sweet and funny story. Kept me chuckling while the jokes were flying on every page. Even looked up the song selections I enjoyed this!

First and foremost, favorite word alert! ‘Confab’ is tops. I love it and use it.

Ok, now then, I liked Liam’s voice for the most part, even if he sometimes sounded too slick for his own good. But he loves his family, they love him, and they all show and share it with one another.

This story also contains what has become one of Merrow’s usual ingredients, and that’s the paranormal and how it’s all too normal a function in the lives of her characters. Coupled with humor and you have a mostly winning combination.

I have to say the Aunties felt stereotypical: skinny and sharp, was one, plump and sweet was another, and sarcastic rebel with a heart of gold was the third. Liam probably most closely resembles her.

Also somewhat typical of Merrow’s shorty tales is the theme of destiny in the form of two people meeting because it’s meant to be. Two people hitting it off because it’s woven into a scarf made with love, and intent. Witchy intent.

The family interactions are enjoyable, if a bit predictable. It also felt like the magical aspect was let down, its potential underused. Also, believe it or not, the ending right before the ending was unnecessary. Liam and his silver fox were doing fine as they were. ;)

A sweet, quickly consumed treat. Typical of Merrow, if a bit on the light side, so you know what you’re getting.
