About the author

JL Merrow is that rare beast, an English person who refuses to drink tea. She read Natural Sciences at Cambridge, where she learned many things, chief amongst which was that she never wanted to see the inside of a lab ever again.
She writes (mostly) contemporary gay romance and mysteries, and is frequently accused of humour. Her novel Slam! won the 2013 Rainbow Award for Best LGBT Romantic Comedy, and several of her books have been EPIC Awards finalists, including Muscling Through, Relief Valve (the Plumber’s Mate Mysteries) and To Love a Traitor.
JL Merrow is a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, International Thriller Writers, Verulam Writers and the UK GLBTQ Fiction Meet organising team.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2016First and foremost, favorite word alert! ‘Confab’ is tops. I love it and use it.
Ok, now then, I liked Liam’s voice for the most part, even if he sometimes sounded too slick for his own good. But he loves his family, they love him, and they all show and share it with one another.
This story also contains what has become one of Merrow’s usual ingredients, and that’s the paranormal and how it’s all too normal a function in the lives of her characters. Coupled with humor and you have a mostly winning combination.
I have to say the Aunties felt stereotypical: skinny and sharp, was one, plump and sweet was another, and sarcastic rebel with a heart of gold was the third. Liam probably most closely resembles her.
Also somewhat typical of Merrow’s shorty tales is the theme of destiny in the form of two people meeting because it’s meant to be. Two people hitting it off because it’s woven into a scarf made with love, and intent. Witchy intent.
The family interactions are enjoyable, if a bit predictable. It also felt like the magical aspect was let down, its potential underused. Also, believe it or not, the ending right before the ending was unnecessary. Liam and his silver fox were doing fine as they were. ;)
A sweet, quickly consumed treat. Typical of Merrow, if a bit on the light side, so you know what you’re getting.
