From the Author

Giuliana Rinaldi, who made brief but unforgettable appearances in my Sea and Stone Chronicles novels, is my tribute to a real-life physician called Trotula de Ruggiero (also known as Trota of Salerno and Dame Trot).

The
Schola Medica of Salerno was believed to be founded sometime in the tenth century and welcomed women during the medieval era. Trotula (born in either the eleventh or twelfth centuries) was one of its most famous and respected graduates.

In addition to practicing medicine, Trotula wrote works pertaining to gynecology and cosmetology. These treatises were highly valued by physicians all over Europe throughout the medieval era.

Legend has it that Trotula married a fellow physician and both her sons went on to practice medicine. She was so well-known that stories about her circulated widely in Europe (for example, she's the Dame Trot mentioned in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales).

As for Eneko, he was inspired by my interest in Basque culture—and by a single line in an academic paper on piracy in the Eastern Mediterranean. According to legal records from the city of Famagusta in Cyprus during the fifteenth century, Catalan pirates used the city as a base for their operations.

In protest, citizens of Famagusta made legal complaints against the city for allowing pirates to circulate freely there. One man complained that sometimes more than a hundred pirates from the Bay of Biscay (off the coast of Spain's Basque country) appeared in the city streets, and the ships they used were Atlantic whaling vessels called
balenas.

I'm grateful to Nicholas Coureas and Andreas G. Orphanides for sharing this and many other details of life in the medieval Mediterranean—their work helped me create dazzling lost worlds in the
Sea and Stone Chronicles novels.

Ms. Maroney's newest book, "The Pirate's Physician," is a brilliant addition to the realm of historical fiction. From the very first page, you are captivated by an immersive and colorful narrative that is nothing short of spellbinding. The story centers around a strong, adventurous, and courageous heroine who is both inspiring and relatable. After a devastating loss and apparent betrayal, Giuliana vows to make her own way in the world, and although she is forced to give up on her dream of completing her medical training, she finds her skill as a physician opens doors she never dreamed of. And introduces her to charismatic people she never thought she’d meet. (Cue Eneko – a sexy pirate to rival Jack Sparrow!)

The author’s meticulous research into medieval medicine shines through, offering readers a fascinating glimpse into 15th-century medical practices and the role of women physicians. This historical detail adds depth and authenticity to the story, making it both fascinating and enlightening. Maroney’s glorious travel descriptions and world-building further enhance the reading experience, transporting readers to the exotic world of the medieval Mediterranean, and making it easy to lose oneself in this enchanting tale.

"The Pirate's Physician" weaves a masterful tapestry of romance, adventure, and mystery. The interplay between Giuliana and her growing attraction to the charismatic Eneko, combined with the intriguing medical practices of the time, creates a story that is both thrilling and heartwarming. A touch of humour and a menacing thread that threatens Giuliana's happiness looms as a great page-turner throughout. This book is a delightful read that I absolutely loved!

Over the last few years, I’ve enjoyed several of Ms Maroney’s excellent novels—and especially those set in the Mediterranean during the 15th century. Ms Maroney has a distinct voice and the ability to immediately hook my interest—two pages in and I really, really want to know what will happen to Giuliana, presently studying at the famous Salerno School of Medicine to become a physician.
Obviously, life will take a number of surprising turns for our heroine, which is how she finds herself aboard a Basque ship captained by the handsome if somewhat intimidating Eneko. Together with her loyal—if far too talkative—servant Rosetta, Giuliana is plunged from one adventure to the next, all the while attempting to hide from a most unwanted betrothed.
A fast-paced story and engaging characters combined with vivid descriptions and a lacing of enough historical details to firmly anchor the story in the past, all of this delivered in a flowing prose—what more can one want? Warmly recommended, especially because Ms Maroney, yet again, highlights the fact that women in the past were not always relegated to the role of wife and mother. Many, like Giuliana, aspired to more—and achieved it!

This is a fabulous historical novella full of action and intrigue, with a beautiful setting and much to interest anyone who likes books about herbalism or ancient medicine. Giulia Rinaldo, a student physician, is based on a real-life physician practising in the days when the ideas of Arabic medicine (and women in the profession) were far ahead of the time. Desperate to escape her old and ugly Florentine suitor who has a claim on her because of an inheritance, Giulia risks all to embark on a journey with Captain Eneko – a gorgeous and dashing pirate. The romance is very swoonworthy! The detail in this novella takes you firmly into her 15th Century world, with immersive descriptions of sea voyages, Mediterranean palaces, and danger and at every turn. All the characters are well-drawn and vivid, and I particularly enjoyed the maidservant Rosetta, who provided both comfort and grit. Wonderful escapism and highly recommended for a winter romantic read.

Ready for an unparalleled journey through the Mediterranean? This novella by Maroney is a little sister for her unabridged novels which are part of the Sea & Stone Chronicles. And what an exquisite taste of her ability as a writer.

Giuliana Rinaldi is suddenly faced with both a personal tragedy and even worse news—the uncle she adored left her destitute. Enter stage right a Signor from Florence who demands her hand in matrimony in exchange for her debt. With no other choice, Giuliana is forced into signing a legal marriage contract. With no peace whatsoever about her situation, she decides to flee to her Aunt Amalia, and finds a kind-hearted (and altogether desirable) pirate who will transport her! Suffice it to say that Giuliana is indeed “transported”, when her rescuer becomes her lover. Though pursued by her Florentine betrothed, Giuliana is able to safely make it to Aunt Amalia and someone else she’s more than pleased to see, before the end of this amusing and swashbuckling story.

Maroney has created a delightful accompaniment to her other Sea & Stone Chronicles, making it a welcoming invitation to readers to pick up one of the full-length ones. Hey, I’m a fan! I’ve read them ALL!

Kudos to Amy Maroney for a continued first-class cruise in the Med, with all of the trappings of adventure, true love, and a fiery heroine!

The Pirate's Physician is another wonderful story by Amy Maroney. This novella has all the fabulous characters, beautiful writing, excitement, adventure, and renaissance history of her full length novels.
Giuliana Rinaldi lives in Salerno and studies medicine while assisting her uncle Dante in his medical practice. On his sudden death she finds herself penniless and homeless, pursued by a ruthless suitor, fleeing by sea to her only relative in Genoa. When rescued by a handsome privateer, Captain Eneko, she must decide how to best pursue her lifelong goal of becoming a doctor.
As with all of Amy Maroney's Sea and Stone Chronicles, this story is about a strong woman trying to take her place in a man's world. The treatment of these issues is sensitive and profound. This book is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical joy to read

Amy Maroney’s latest novella about Guiliana Rinaldi, a student at the Medieval Salerno women’s medical school, is a page-turning joy to read. Just right for a summer vacation or a winter fireside. As with her previous novels, Maroney’s writing took me straight to a time and place long ago. Small details such as what people ate, how they dressed, the way they danced and travelled, are testament to her background research. And the storyline kept me guessing to the end.
Guiliana’s lifelong intention to become a physician is upended when her uncle and mentor dies, leaving her with a huge outstanding debt to repay, no home and no means of supporting herself or his loyal but voluble servant Rosetta. Seeing no alternative, Guiliana agrees to wed a disagreeable wool merchant. Then, realising her mistake, she flees Salerno aboard a vessel bound for Genoa, where her only surviving relative lives. Having dragged a very reluctant Rosetta onto the Genoese galley, Guiliana soon finds herself in a worse situation – only to be rescued by a Basque pirate. Rosetta has a lot to say about this, and many other complaints, but Rosetta knows how to keep a secret, and this secret is key to Guiliana’s entire story. To say more here, would be a spoiler.
Guiliana is a woman of her time in an appalling situation. Her medical skills prove both a help and a hindrance. Fortunately, she allows herself to be aided by a pirate, which turns this story an unpredictable yet convincing historical romance. I was with Guiliana all the way, and disappointed when the novella ended.
