Pity Parade (Pity Series Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 510 ratings

Trina Rockwell here. You know, your favorite TV host from Midwestern Matchmaker? While I’ve been setting up Midwestern singles for seven years, I’ve not had any luck finding myself a guy.

My last great encounter was a year ago when I bid on a date with billionaire Heath Fox at a charity auction. But then, after a great date and an even better good night kiss, Heath told me he wasn’t looking for a relationship. Super.

Now that Midwestern Matchmaker has been cancelled, my producer has got it into his head to do a new show where I’m the one who finds love. He wants to set me up with a bunch of B-List celebrities, the likes of which have me considering joining a convent.

There’s only one thing I can think of doing and that’s finding a boyfriend for real. The last thing I expected was for Heath to come back into my life and cause trouble.

Trina

“Trina Rockwell?” I’m tempted to run. At the very least I should consider changing my name. Katrina has suited me well over the years, but it might be fun to try Marigold or Joslyn for a while. You know, a name with no impending sense of doom attached to it.

I continue to sit in my chair as a twenty-something-year-old woman enters the lobby. Her gaze shifts about like she’s a hunter and I’m her prey. She’s short and appears athletic enough she could probably lift me over her head without breaking a sweat. She also seems annoyed. Welcome to my world, sister.

I used to love coming to the production offices of Midwestern Matchmaker, but that was back when I was part of a production I was proud of. Pushing up onto my extra-high espadrilles, I smooth nonexistent wrinkles from my skirt. Then, with a deep breath, I wave my hand in the air. “Right here.”

The woman’s mid-length bob seemingly lengthens as her chin cranes upward to take in my over six-foot stature. I’m only five-ten on my own, but I’m hoping the added shoe height will make me more intimidating to my pint-sized producer. Either that or it might give me the internal boost of courage I need to get through this meeting. With any luck, both.

“I’m Tom Meranda’s new assistant, Phil,” the woman says. At least, I think she’s a woman—maybe she only identifies that way.

“How’s that going for you?” My tone is full of derision. I used to like Tom, back when he was producing the version of Midwestern Matchmaker I was proud of. But we got into a tiff when he tried to force a more salacious agenda. That’s when I lost all respect for him. Then we lost our show.

Phil ignores my question, turns around, and marches with military precision down the hallway like a little dictator. I’m tempted to call out orders drill-sergeant style. “Lift those knees, soldier! Chin up! Shoulders back!”

Tom’s assistant opens his door without knocking and gestures for me to sit down on one of the chairs across from his desk. Meanwhile, he’s staring out the window at the Chicago River below, talking to someone on the phone. “That’s right, Ginger. Yes … uh-huh … she just came into my office. I’ll call you back when our meeting is over.” He hangs up and spins his chair around. His expression is deadpan. He waits several long beats before breaking the silence. “You look well, Trina.”

“Your bald spot is getting bigger,” I tell him.

Resting his chin on the teepee he’s made of his fingertips, he states the obvious. “Still mad, I see.”

Crossing one leg over the other, I reply, “You can take full credit for the change in our relationship.”

He narrows his beady eyes. “You were told at the beginning of last season that if we didn’t make some changes, there would be no chance of getting picked up.”

“Yes, Tom, but change doesn’t always mean pandering to the lowest common denominator. Change can be good.” I sound like a schoolteacher trying to talk sense into a bully hellbent on beating the snot out of a weaker kid. In this instance, me.

My producer kicks his feet onto his desktop as though the tediousness of this topic is exhausting his precious limbs. “We’re in the reality programming game, Trina. Change for us always means a move toward the more titillating.” I know he’s right, but before I can concede as much, he adds, “You’re the one who decided you were too good for that and now we’re all up a creek without a paddle. But I have an idea than can save us all..."

USA Today Bestselling author Whitney Dineen is a rock star in her own head. While delusional about her singing abilities, there’s been a plethora of validation that she’s a fairly decent author (AMAZING!!!). After winning many writing awards and selling nearly a kabillion books (math may not be her forte, either), she’s decided to let the voices in her head say whatever they want (sorry, Mom). She also won a fourth-place ribbon in a fifth-grade swim meet in backstroke. So, there’s that.

Whitney loves to play with her kids (a.k.a. dazzle them with her amazing flossing abilities), bake stuff, eat stuff, and write books for people who "get" her. She thinks french fries are the perfect food and Mrs. Roper is her spirit animal.

Five star rom com
I am so obsessed with this book. Right from the beginning, I was hooked. I was so invested in needing to know what happens next. Whitney has that kind of writing style that makes you fall into the story. The storyline and cover made me want to read this right away. The plot was perfect. I have never laughed so hard and cried so much at a rom com that it will stay with me for a while. The characters were all amazing. The main characters, Trina and Heath, are, as of right now, on my top five favorite fictional couples. Trina Rockwell is my spirit sister. I found a lot of myself in her personality. I love her feisty attitude and how hilarious she is. She is a strong woman who is not afraid to go for what she wants. She is definitely someone i would be really good friends with. Heath is a broken and conflicted man. I love the banter between him and Trina. I did want to punch him in the throat a few times, though. The side characters brought more depth and happiness in their roles. Tom even played the villain perfectly. If you want a small town romcom with so much humor and real-life instances, this is for you. Now I have to go back and read the series from the beginning.

I'm reading them out of order, but I've loved each of the stories. They are cute and clean and make you fall in love with the characters. I love that we all make mistakes but are given a second chance to make things right. In fact, it may be the making things right that makes the second time better and stronger than before. You know what you lost and you don't want to make that mistake again.

Today is the big release day for Whitney Dineen's "Pity Parade," the fourth book in the Pity Series. Even though I'm itching to go back and read the first three books set in Elk Lake, this was actually my first time diving into the author's work and I have to say, I absolutely loved it!
Trina heads to Elk Lake in search of some peace and a fake boyfriend to throw off the meddling producers of her reality matchmaking show that just got cancelled. They want her to start a new show where they control her love life, and she's having none of it. So, she comes up with a plan to find a fake boyfriend to get out of the new show. On the flip side, there's Heath, a widower who's still reeling from the loss of his wife and unborn child, vowing to never love again. He finds solace in Elk Lake, a place that holds precious memories from when he was just 12 years old. When they both arrive tat Elk Lake for the summer, Trina and Heath are taken aback to realize they actually met a year ago. Trina had bid on a date with Heath at a charity auction, where he had made it clear that he wasn't looking for any kind of relationship. Taking the hint, Trina now resolves to steer clear of Heath at all costs. On the other hand, Heath finds himself still drawn to the lovely Trina and wouldn't mind a casual fling. The stage is set for a summer of unexpected encounters and romantic possibilities in the idyllic setting of Elk Lake.
"Pity Parade" had me in stitches and I was hooked from start to finish. Whitney Dineen's witty writing style instantly drew me in, reminding me of some of my go-to rom-com authors. Trina and Heath's dynamic kept me on the edge of my seat, as they navigated the fine line between enemies and lovers, complete with playful sabotage and undeniable chemistry. Dineen's clever storytelling has earned her a spot on my must-read list for sure! For anyone seeking a delightful summer read that's both lighthearted and touching, I highly recommend "Pity Parade"! With its blend of fun and emotional moments, this book kept me thoroughly entertained. I'm already counting down the days until the release of the next book, "Pity Present" - I can't wait to dive back into the world of Elk Lake with Whitney Dineen.

I knew that Whitney Dineen would not disappoint in this latest book in her "Pity" series. It was an absolute delight to read. I loved following Trina's wildly funny plots to get to her ultimate goal -- only to find that her reward was far more rewarding than she could have imagined. This is a perfect beach read that will have you laughing and wishing you could hang out with Trina and her gang there in Elk Lake for a few weeks this summer. Now, I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

The ultimate matchmaker is in trouble. Trina's boss wants her to star in a matchmaking series that has potential for being a disaster. Her desperation leads her to some pretty interesting interactions. Heath has made some drastic decisions and business moves, and now he's going to work on his personal life. I love how this author brings realistic life issues into her books that provoke thought and have gracious solutions, all while being funny and romantic. Once again, a delightful, heartwarming and fun book.

This is my first book in the series and I wish I had read the previous three. It's not entirely required, but I think it would have helped understand the secondary characters a little more.

In this story, our female main character's, Trina, matchmaking reality show has been canceled because she refused to exploit one of the couples (this occurs in a previous book). Unfortunately, her horrible producer wants her to be the star in a new show where they'll try to match her with some B-list celebrities. Trina has another idea in mind and decides to use her summer off and try to find a boyfriend in real life, so she can get out of this project. That's where our male main character, Heath comes into play. Even though they had a great date once, a year before, he now seems to be trying to sabotage her plans to find someone. They end up being neighbors for the summer and the drama ensues. Heath has a very sad past and it has clouded his ideas about love for the future. So why can't he just let Trina be?

There are certainly some amusing moments in this book, but this story also has a sadder, more tragic storyline. There are ups and downs and we are left at the edge of our seats to see if they will get there HEA.

This was an enjoyable read and I might have to look for future stories in this series.

I received this ARC and voluntarily read this book.

I was given an Arc copy of this book and have chosen to review as follows

To be honest i love this author so knew I’d probably really enjoy this book and shocker I did lol

It, although a stand alone is part of a series that is basically about residents living in a town so this one on particular is based on not any of them residents but the main character used to host a dating show which was lastly filmed in the town and she made good friends with some of the people in the town and is based around how she is there now trying to find a way out of a mess she has made so that she now has to be the main character in a new kind of reality tv dating show

I’m trying not to spoil it for anyone reading this by giving to much info on the story but it is a brilliant easy reading book with quirky characters and the ability to make you feel like you’re part of the story the whole way through

Sharp, smart, creative and thoughtful story of two people navigating their pasts to get to a vision of a happier future. Trina is dealing with a vindictive television producer following the cancellation of her matchmaking show and Heath is still in the grip of unresolved grief ten years after becoming a widower. They both live in Chicago but it is only when they meet again whilst vacationing in Elk Lake that they make new mutual friends who help them to step into new possibilities.
