A secret lies buried at the heart of her family―but it can’t stay hidden forever.

When Cara stumbles across a stash of old postcards in the attic, their contents make her question everything she thought she knew.

The story she pieces together is confusing and unsettling, and appears to have been patched over with lies. But who can tell her the truth? With her father sinking into Alzheimer’s and her brother reluctant to help, it seems Cara will never find the answers to her questions. One thing is clear, though: someone knows more than they’re letting on.

Torn between loyalty to her family and dread of what she might find, Cara digs into the early years of her parents’ troubled marriage, hunting down long-lost relatives who might help unravel the mystery. But the picture that begins to emerge is not at all the one she’d expected―because as she soon discovers, lies have a habit of multiplying . . .

Review

“A poignant page-turner about the devastating effects of abusive relationships and the ripples that can impact future generations…Postcards from a Stranger drew me in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until its final pages…Clark doesn’t offer any easy solutions yet the book is filled with hope and the possibility of second chances.” ―Emily Cavanagh, author of This Bright Beauty and The Bloom Sisters

I don’t know if it was my crazy life lately, the book, or a combination of the two, but it took me forever to get into this book. But when it finally grabbed me, it turned out to be quite good.

The story revolves around Cara, a 30 something British woman who designs wedding dresses. At first that’s all she seems to have going for her. She still lives at home with her father, no mention of a love life, and not many friends, except Beth. The relationship between Cara and Beth was one of my favorite parts. They have a life long friendship that they both respect. They always know what to and what not to say to each other. As most best friends do, they are there for each other during the good times, the bad times, and everything in between. There is no spoken judgement unless absolutely necessary. A true and enviable friendship that so many of us don’t realize we have until it’s too late.

It also gave me a different perspective of losing a loved one. A loved one you don’t particularly care for. Once they are gone, so should be any bitterness or negativity. Find something, even if it’s just one thing and use it to celebrate the life that has been lost. In the end that’s all that’s there, that’s all that matters, the life that has been lost.

The author beat us to the punch as to what we thought the twist would be and wrapped things up very nicely.

    Well done Ms. Clark!

This was her best book yet. Her characters really come alive on the page and I can picture every one of them in my mind. The story moves along quickly and I love the way she pauses the main character to give viewpoint of the story from a different characters perspective. It all meshes into a great book. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this read, cannot wait to see what else she has written. Thank you Ms. Clark for so many days of reading through all of your books, not just this one.

The characters were lovely, and the idea of a mother leaving her children was intriguing. But the narrative struggled a bit at the edges, like there was more to the story that wasn’t quite pushed to its potential. I’d give it an extra half star because I see that a lot of its brilliance is in its subtlety, in its control. I very much admire the writing. And I think it probably portrays reality more closely with its grey areas, where no one is all bad or all good. But I found myself wishing a few times that the author had pushed the characters a bit, given them a little more license to be “more.” Spoiler alert: Could Greg have pushed his new wife to the limit before she in any way stood up to him? Could Cara’s dad have been a sliver more more menacing, the drama maybe played out as flashbacks or somehow with more flare? There were some great scenes that showed what he was like, but they felt like they were building up to something bigger; and then at the end it just felt like Cara processed it with her friend as, “Yeah, I guess he was mean.” Overall this was a well-written book, with an engaging protagonist, worth the read. I wonder if it could have been even more.

A dead mother or is she. A chance discovery leads Cara on a journey of discovery about family, marriage and abuse across several generations..

Imogen writes very well and it is a pleasure to read her words. She researches her subject and presents realistic situations and thinking. But this is not a personal account or autobiography and there is a degree of stereotyping.

It was an interesting story with some big twists.

I found the chopping and changing of characters and time puzzling. The hint of academic is present there are too many points being made. This is reflected in the quiz at the end.
