"A runaway train of revenge, rivalry and angst. This complex and venomous tale takes on a modern-day Cruel Intentions/Mean Girls vibe. Pretty Reckless is unputdownable and absolute Kindle Crack." - Kindle Crack Book Reviews

From USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author L.J. Shen comes an intense, high school enemies-to-lovers romance with a twist.

Penn

They say revenge is a dish best served cold.
I’d had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart was completely iced.
I took her first kiss. She took the only thing I loved.
I was poor. She was rich.
The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast.
Now, I’m her parents’ latest shiny project.
Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much.
Yeah, baby girl, say it—I’m your foster brother.
There’s a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she’s about to shell out some serious tears.
Daria Followhill thinks she is THE queen.
I’m about to prove to her that she’s nothing but a spoiled princess.

Daria

Everyone loves a good old unapologetic punk.
But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversaries’ way.
The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you.
In Penn Scully’s case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day.
Four years ago, he asked me to save all my firsts for him.
Now he lives across the hall, and I want nothing more than to be his last everything.
His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free.
Now? Now he is making me pay.

5 Favorite Book Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pretty Reckless is my favorite Lj Shen book. Actually, it’s one of my all-time favorite books, period. We fell in love with the HotHoles in the Sinners of Saint series. Now we head into All Saints High for the next generation - the totholes. Who are just as hot, just as popular and have just as much baggage. This book is a bit different from other Lj books. She starts each chapter with a quote, in reference to the chapter. It’s quite beautiful & simultaneously witty. Lj has a love & understanding for poetry and art. The way she writes can be quite poetic. We see glimpses of this in Vicious. And even more so in Bane - with that beautiful Pushkin poem, that becomes somewhat of a minor focal point in the book. And it becomes quite regular in most of he books. But in Pretty Reckless it’s even more apparent. And it’s not quoting a poem or starting each chapter with a beautiful poem, like she often does. But she starts each chapter with a witty quote, that come from the characters, from her. And I LOVE it! Enemies to Lovers is my favorite trope. And Lj does this trope effortlessly, like a pro! She was meant for it. And so does Penn & Daria. From childhood crushes, to enemies, to foster siblings, to lust, to love. Penn & Daria are the definition of Enemies to Lovers & Bully Romance. The sexual tension between them, throughout the book, is off the charts. It’s like they both know deep down that they love each other, but they have no idea how to show it, or allow themselves to even feel it. They put up walls by being a bully or an unfeeling ice-princess - but that’s not who they truly are. It’s a defense mechanism. They are scarred from their past and scared of being vulnerable, for different reasons. So they turn all their good emotions off. And only see the bad in themselves. Though they can’t fight the sexual tension. Even when they supposedly “hate each other” they love each other. These two go through and have endured a lot. From loss, to abuse, to bullying, abandonment, neglect, poor self image, to betrayal, and more. But eventually they figure out who they really are, who they really want to be and what they want in life - their true selves. It takes a lot of time & effort for each of them to reach this point. But the results are swoon worthy and sweet young romance at it’s finest. What they want is each other. And to just be better people, overall. They are both dealing with familial issues. Penn’s centers around his sister and loss of his family. And Daria, the relationship with her family. I loved seeing Jaime as a father and their deep bond. They are very close. His protectiveness and insight with her made him even more lovable. And that was a very positive part in this book. But, not so much with her mother. They have a very strained relationship that becomes the catalyst for many of Daria’s main issues. But as everything else evolves, heals & redeems throughout this book - so does their relationship. There’s a lot of depth to this book & it delivers All The Feels! Lj is one of my favorite authors and always a one-click author. I will read anything she releases and already know I will love it.

First book I have read in a long time that made me laugh and also cry. This author is so amazingly talented in almost everything she writes, to say she is one of my favorites would be an understatement. I loved the series about their parents and I love this series so far too!!!

I tried reading this book last year and I ended up dnf'ing it. Having read the parents' books recently, I needed more from this world, so I gave this another chance. Finished it over the course of a day! It's good. I think it took becoming invested in the 1st generation characters for me to have an appreciation or interest.

I will say that while I liked the writing in general, I did take a few issues with it. There is a choppiness about it. For me, it frequently seemed as though there was context missing from inner monologues and character to character dialog that would leave me a bit stumped. I would often have to pause to try and wrap my brain around what just happened to get us to where we are now. Sort of reminds me of Meagan Brandy's writing style, choppy and jumpy.

It also reminds me of Brandy's style in the sense that the plot is there, but it's taken down an over-the-top tunnel of potential doom. Meaning, the author gambles with their readers who may or may not be able to suspend their disbelief enough to stay invested. I run into that problem constantly with Brandy's work, and the more I read of Leigh Shen, the more I find I run into that exact same issue.

In Pretty Reckless, the gamble paid off... only barely. I felt like everytime it was going off the rails, Shen managed to reel it back just enough for me to keep going. I liked the plot. Never a dull moment, which kept me engaged, but at the same time, I wanted a few dull moments so I could come back down to earth. It was a whiplash sort of read.

The emotional journey, though! That's what carried this book for me. I could actually feel the constant turmoil Daria was in with her mother and herself. Shen did an excellent job of tapping into a young woman of Daria's age and really highlighting the inner conflicts she was experiencing.

As for the romance, I must admit I needed a little more in the tender moments department. It was definitely exciting, with the angst and slightly forbidden element. However, it lacked that level of depth that truly draws me in. I need to have, at least, a couple of quiet and calm moments between the love interests to lock it into place for me. I don't feel like that was delivered here. Instead, we get stolen moments of lust. I need more than that.

I want to keep going with this series, but I'm hesitant. I've read the reviews for the next books in this series. They seemed mixed - people either love them or they don't. That makes me nervous because I love these characters and I want to love each of their stories. I think I'm especially nervous to read Vaughn's book. I don't know...

    Previous Review;
Don't think so! Dnf'd at 15%. Too juvenile and too many trendy turns of phrases. My patience was buckling within the 1st chapter... I just knew this wasn't gonna be tolerable for me. Still, I made an effort to give it a chance with a few more chapters. No change - it was still sucking.

I bought the entire All Saints series, and they have now been passed along to my young teenage daughter. This series is probably not for an adult audience and would be more suitable for the teens.

Oh my Marx! This book is so... so... ugh, there's no words but incredible. Daria and Penn are so perfectly imperfect! They are just teens, making mistakes, falling in hate and then in love and feeling jealousy and anger and lust and lost. Being "inside" daria, feeling her emotions and pain and depression was almost too much. I love it. I love it so fcking much I'm a little afraid to read the next ones. I'm gonna miss daria e penn and hope to see them again.

This story has been such an emotional roller coaster for me. If not exactly triggers, it brought back so many memories I wasn’t ready to come to terms with yet.
It’s always the matter of what get to you and what doesn’t.
Confess I started reading this book with a negative prejudice against Daria, was sure I wouldn't like her at all. But this wasn’t reason enough to miss one of Ms Shen stories.
Well, I don’t know how the hell this happened, but Daria ended up among my favourites. I loved her and I especially loved her flaws. Ms Shen’s amazing talent does that to me all the times, she turns commonly hideous traits into characters that I cannot help but loving.
Brava! No more than that. Bravissima!

I highly anticipated this book and finally got to meet the All Saints High crew. They were even better than I expected.

The first book in the series starts with Queen B Daria and bad boy hoodrat Penn. Even though she was mean to the sweet Luna when they were little I still craved to read her book because I do love me a mean girl book.

Daria and Penn go way back but things go bad very fast after their first kiss. Now he's back in her life... With a vengeance. I was on the edge of my seat while listening to this highly entertaining story which is a mix of Mean Girls, Gossip Girl, sparkled with some Romeo & Juliet and even a little Wizard of Oz. Penn and Daria gave me all the feels. Their chemistry was amazing and they were a perfect fit together.

Aside from them, we also got to meet the other All Saints High characters: Knight (my favorite!), Vaughn, Luna, and their school mates. The boys really shined in this. I was a little disappointed we didn't get more from Luna, but I also understand. This is Daria's story and Luna will shine brightly in hers <3!

The story itself was superbly written; it had humor, moments that squeezed my heart, and every character was well developed. The audiobook had great narration as well. Shen took great care in choosing her narrators!

All in all, a great book and I look highly forward to reading the upcoming ones!
