Legend (Pride F.C. Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 399 ratings

Tom

Legend of the Game. That’s me, apparently. I suppose it’s meant to be a compliment, but to me it just sounds like one of those labels people slap on you when you’re on your way out.

Legend. Stalwart. Dinosaur. It all sounds the same to me.

I’ve been in the Premier League for over twenty years and I’m not ready to leave. I’m definitely not about to let myself get pushed out by a flashy upstart like Archie Milligan.

The kid is way too shiny, way too bouncy…and way too attractive. And if I have to spend any more time training one-on-one with him, I’m going to go insane.

Archie

Playing for Croydon Pride has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. The circumstances that led to me switching clubs weren’t ideal, but I’ve always been a bright side kind of guy, so I plan to make the most of it.

There’s just one problem. Tom Whitford—AKA the not-so-secret object of all my youthful fantasies, and my current training partner—is a total arsehole.

He thinks we’re rivals, but all I want is to be mates. Okay, maybe that’s not all I want, but it’s what I’ll take…after all, what are the odds the legendary player I’ve been swooning over for years is not only secretly attracted to men, but to me in particular?

Legend
is book one of the Pride F.C. series. Expect soccer (ahem, football!), shenanigans, sexytimes, British humour, British slang, British spelling, and men falling hopelessly in love.

This story was, IMO, the Roy Kent-Jamie Tartt fanfic I’ve been wanting to read, and I am here for it. Except it’s about Tom and Archie, and they’re fantastic all on their own. So even though throughout I was getting serious Roy/Jamie vibes, it was absolutely the Tom/Archie show. Whatever. It was fun and I loved it. Looking forward to the next one!

I’m a huge football fan, and even more so of the Premier league, so I was excited to read this! It was a fun read with some pretty hot sexy times! Tom Whitford, the (closeted) aging footballer, is a legend and a grump. He gives off strong Roy Kent vibes, IYKYK. He’s none too happy to see out and proud nineteen year old Archie joining Pride F.C. and feels he’s being forced to mentor his competition and eventual replacement. What ensues is some fantastic flirting on Archie’s part, and some great UST brewing. It was fun seeing Tom’s walls crumble, and I just loved Archie’s up beat attitude and his ability to convert his childhood crush to the Tom he gets to know. The rest of the Pride F.C. teammates were fantastic and I was a huge fan of their banter. Especially their thoughts on Bake Off! This was a fun way to kick off a new series and I’d look forward to more!

I really liked this story and both of the main characters, at points of the book I was laughing out loud. Though I do wish that Archie was a bit older at the start of the book. I love an age gap, but I tend to prefer it when the younger of the two people is at least 23.

This is an absolutely great start to this new series. I love reading work from these two authors separately and together they're just as great. I had a lot fun reading this and laughed out loud a few times. I can't wait for book two.

I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

This was exactly what I needed!! A love story that was witty, filled with laughter, and solidly romantic! Smiled, giggled, and laughed through the whole thing. And swooned . . . Perfect!

Archie Milligan and this story are ridiculously cute. This is a grumpy vs sunshine, age gap romance between team mates. Wonderful supporting characters, no unnecessary angst…just a wonderful romance!

This a modern sports romance, the first book in a series that should be read in order. Tom is Archie’s hero so when they end up playing for the same team, he wants to make Tom his mate. Meanwhile, Tom is fighting his own secret attraction to the young player. In the end they are perfect for each other. What a good read, I’m curious how the rest of the series will go!

I finished this because I generally never DNF. It was very formulaic. I never felt a connection between the two MC. It was boring and never had any believable emotions.

5.0 out of 5 stars What nineteen-year-old, as gorgeous and fit as Archie ...
Reviewed in Australia on January 20, 2024
... would ever be interested in a washed-up old dinosaur like me?

I was looking for something light and fun and this book popped up in my TBR and it fit the bill. I adored the little nod to Ted Lasso / AFC Richmond in this story - with the older player Tom (Roy Kent) being forced to mentor the up and coming player Archie (Jamie Tartt). But despite these loose similarities, the story really stood out on its own. Archie is so bubbly and full of life compared to the grown, grump Tom but somehow, together the chemistry between these two is HOT and they just fit together. I really hope we get more in this series - I'll be on the lookout for more!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The humour was so good the MCs were great loved the grumpy sunshine trope. I loved that the side characters were well fleshed out so it felt more real and the team and Archie's parents were hilarious. Loved it. Highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super sweet age-gap, British sports romance!

Super sweet age-gap, British sports romance!

Tom and Archie were adorable. And I'm looking forward to where the series is going to go.

I would have loved a bit more on Tom and Courtney's relationship. And perhaps Tom giving more consideration to identifying as bisexual given that.

I LOVED Gideon coming out and challenging the "you're with a woman so you must be straight" narrative.

    In this you'll find:
    ⚽️MM contemporary sports romance
    ⚽️English Premier league soccer/football
    ⚽️Closeted older player
    ⚽️Out gay young hotshot

    ⚽️Giving up a dog + dog adoption
    ⚽️Homophobia from former team mates

4.0 out of 5 stars cute story
Reviewed in Canada on September 18, 2023
Thoroughly enjoyed this fun story with its witty humour. low angst: Great cast of characters. 😊 Tom is a gem and a growly teddy and great dad. Archie is a cute puppy full of energy. They compliment each other nicely.
Showcases the societal differences from how Tom needed to be closeted when he started his career and how, though not perfect, changes in society have allowed Archie to be open about his sexuality. I love how that infuriates Tom despite also providing ongoing hope for the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good start 🌈⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a feel-good read with lots of laugh out loud moments. Tom is a big grump ( but a big teddy bear for the people he loves), and archie is all sunshine and rainbows, which i found adorable 🌈 . They fit together, and its lovely to see their relationship developing. The secondary characters are brilliant, and i love all the banter from their teammates. There is only a tiny bit of angst, so don't bother reading if you want a gritty book. I can't wait for book 2.
