Pride and Principal: A Silicon Valley Mystery (Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 21 ratings

The school secretary has a sharp tongue but is she a killer? Can Marty do the math or will he get schooled by a criminal mastermind?

Marty Golden is frazzled. Struggling to juggle nieces, a rambunctious dog, a demanding job, and a serious relationship, the software engineer is never quite sure whether he’s coming or going. But when his nemesis begs for help after she’s accused of offing the school principal, the amateur sleuth agrees to hunt down the real culprit.

Confounded to discover the cantankerous woman stood to take the dead man’s position, he strives to find anyone who could benefit from discrediting the grump. And when his brilliant deductions and personal life implode, not even Marty’s groan-worthy dad-jokes can save him from an explosive threat.

Does this bumbling amateur sleuth have what it takes to capture the real killer?

Pride and Principal is the rollicking sixth book in the Silicon Valley cozy mystery series. If you like heroes in over their head, family hijinks, and plenty of wit and charm, then you’ll love Marc Jedel’s wild ride.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Marc Jedel writes humorous murder mysteries. Years in Silicon Valley marketing leadership positions honed his sense of humor and writing skills. Crafting fiction on the job was simply called emails, ads, and marketing collateral.

The publication of Marc’s first novel, Uncle and Ants, gave him permission to claim “author” as his job. This leads to much more interesting conversations with people than answering, “marketing.”

Like his character, Andy, from the Redwoods Country Mystery series, Marc continues to grow older and would prefer not to run a bed-and-breakfast inn when he retires. Like his character, Marty, from the Silicon Valley Mystery series, Marc now lives in Silicon Valley, works in high-tech, and enjoys bad puns. Like his characters Jonas and Elizabeth from the Ozarks Lake Mystery series, he grew up in the South and spent plenty of time in and around Arkansas. Like all his protagonists, Marc too has a dog, although his is neurotic, sweet, and small, with little appreciation for Marc’s humor.

Marty Golden, full time engineer for self-driving car company, Rover, is also a part time Crime Solver and Consulting Detective extraordinaire (in his mind). He is also a helpful uncle for his 2 nieces. When the principal at their school dies, Marty happens to be right there when Mrs. Quarles, school secretary and enforcer of school RULES runs out of the principal’s office, and Marty must investigate. Thus, the mystery begins.
This is another wonderful addition to this quirky, fun, clean, cozy series. This is fine as a stand-alone, but so much fun to read the whole series!
The only problem that I ever have with this series is that I can’t stand waiting for the next book!
All of Marc Jedel’s works are laugh out loud, quirky mysteries that are so much fun! I’d love to see this series as a TV show. If you like Monk and/or Psych, you’ll love this book and series.

If you’re a fan of humorous cozy mystery books, you can count on Marc Jedel to entertain you! Pride and Principal is the latest book in his hilarious Silicon Valley Mystery series starring Marty Golden. You don’t need to read the series in order, but these books are so funny that I think you should read them all!

Marty’s sister has once again left him in charge of his two nieces while she’s out of town…why she thinks he’s a suitable option to watch her kids is beyond me! Kidding! (Sort of kidding!) I mean Marty does have two kids in college, and they turned out fine. Anyway, Uncle Marty is in charge, and his duties include school drop-offs which most likely means he’ll run into Mrs. Quarles, the school secretary. (Marty has had dealings with her before, and they haven’t gone well.) Well, things are about to get weird… When Marty arrives to drop off his nieces, no one is around. Did he miss drop-off? He figures he’d better go find out what’s going on, and that means talking to Mrs. Quarles. Imagine his surprise when he walks into the office and finds her in quite a state. The principal is dead! Is it murder? Did he die of natural causes? It doesn’t matter to Marty. He’s on the case either way! And from there, this mystery turns into another mad-cap Marty adventure.

Marty cracks me up. He’s definitely one of the funniest amateur sleuths around. Even his job is amusing. He works for a company that makes self-driving cars, and his work mates usually end up helping him with his detective work. Under the radar, of course. I won’t tell you about them (although one is on vacation in this book) because you’ll want to experience the craziness for yourself. (Again, I think you should read ALL of this series to really appreciate their dynamics.) Marty’s nieces are entertaining too! You’ve got to read about them to grasp just how entertaining they are. Jedel’s humor contains a lot of wit, so you’ve got to expect some dry humor and “dad” jokes to truly recognize just how funny he is.

Since Marty’s staying with the girls at his sister’s house, Mrs. Kim (another awesome character) isn’t in this one much (another reason to read the series). However, I totally understand why Jedel couldn’t put all of the regulars in since several new characters are introduced just for this book. They are…the suspects, er, parents. Jedel makes it pretty easy to keep track of these characters since Marty gives them all nicknames.

Marty’s round-about way of solving the case makes for much entertainment. I don’t want to give away his “friendship” with the detective because it’s another thing you have to encounter on your own to truly appreciate it.

Needless to say, I highly recommend Pride and Principal for its wit, well-written characters, madcap mystery, and general hilarity! It’s a page-turning cozy mystery that you’ll find hard to put down! Grab the book and experience Marty for yourself!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

I am one of the first readers of the novel… expectations are beyond of “met”. This novel (as all the author’s other books… i read them all!) is great read… funny, light, clean, easy flow, kept me in suspense until the very unexpected end! If looking for a mystery book to keep you in a good mood and entertaining without gore and violence … this is your book

Amateur sleuth, Marty Golden, refreshed from his vacation in Hawaii, immediately finds himself enmeshed in another mystery at his nieces’ elementary school. After dropping the girls off following a school break, Marty goes into the school office to be sure school is open, to find the usually commanding and stoic Mrs. Quarles, the school secretary, frantic and exclaiming that there had been a death.

This story, the sixth in the Silicon Valley mystery series, reacquaints the reader with familiar characters including the delightful Raj, Marty’s co-worker. They have a friendly competition going to see who can use the most American English idioms in a conversation.

Suspecting that the death might not be due to natural causes, Marty takes it upon himself to “assist” the San Jose Police Department, by checking the alibis of all the school parents who might have been present that morning. Through his efforts he becomes drawn into the soccer mom and PTA parent crowd and their social gatherings. These often-awkward interactions lead him to test out several theories on “who done it”.

One of the delightful elements of this story is Marty’s newfound appreciation for Mrs. Quarles. Seeing her in this dilemma opens his eyes to some of her impressive characteristics. For example, she has a sparring contest with Mrs. Needlemeyer who came to take her place during the investigation. Marty “edged away, worried about getting caught in their crossfire if energy weapons or magic spells were employed”.

This story was engaging and fun to read with some well written surprises. I welcomed the opportunity to preview it and to provide a review.

I really enjoyed the 6th installment of Marty's adventures - at this point in the series, it's like sitting down and catching up with an old friend! In any event, although Marty initially suspects everyone even remotely related to the murder victim, he does manage to narrow down his list of suspects, discover the cause of death and figure out who the actual murderer is.

    Good read!

Uncle Marty, you never cease to amaze me with all your antics! I see you haven't lost your sloothing ways, odd sense of humor or need to be "helpful" with solving crimes that just happen to follow you wherever you go! Good to see you (and your family) again old friend! As always, enjoyable and fun read! Till next time Uncle Marty...
