Project Eo: A Dystopian Science Fiction (5th City Chronicles Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Jaisa is a plaything.

Living Art. Property.

And now, she's a rebel.

The alien "gods" enslaved humanity, but a rebellion is being born. Jaisa longs to join the resistance, yet serves as a concubine to her “husband,” a brilliant but deranged scientist. His latest lab creation is Eo, a woman he designed from a cocktail of genes and memory infusions. Eo’s sole purpose: to hunt down the rebels as the flaming sword of the gods.

If Jaisa is caught aiding in the rebellion, she risks not only her own life, but those of the two serving girls she loves like children. Jaisa fights to free her kind but realizes that Eo is a victim, too. To defeat the gods, Jaisa must not only stop Eo, but save her. Such a powerful sword can cut both ways.
Eo could be the instrument of humanity's final destruction... or, wielded correctly, the key to its salvation.

Hi. My name is Jesse and I’m a compulsive writer.

I can’t help it. I write prolifically. I write because I must! And luckily for you, my dear reader, the stories never stop.

What do I write?

I write fantasy because the world we live in can feel like a trap.

I write sci-fi because I like to toy with worlds, universes, and cultures. I like to play god. I write horror as a kind of decadence. I mean, who doesn’t like writing that bleeds?

Regardless of what type of speculative fiction I write, you can expect that it will be dark. Whether my inspiration comes from a shiver crawling up my spine while darting across a dark parking lot, a fascination with Gothic heroines and their delightful kidnappability, or a desire to build a world to suit a spiffy MMO character, that dark undercurrent of fear makes me feel alive.

So, if you enjoy science fiction and fantasy with an eye to horror, join my readers group at JesseSprague.com.

I’d love to have you along for special sneak-peeks, cover reveals, free stories, and more! Just to show how special you are to me, I’ll start you off with an exclusive short story!

There are many fears nowadays, and aliens invasion is one of them, I'd think. At least since 4th of July, many of us have wondered, what if the aliens come and try to crush us little human bugs? (we might deserve it but that's another issue!) But usually, the movies show us the good guys crushing the aliens back before they put their furry behinds (or steely, whatever) on our beloved (and compromised) planet.
But what if those aliens won? What if they subdue us and allow a few of us to reign over the others? I shiver to think what would those humans do with power at their hands. Well, Ms. Sprague creepily answered that question and showed us a nasty part of human nature, augmented by the creepy aliens' aid. Aliens who think themselves gods and won't let us utter a word against them.
Worse, we can't even touch other human beings! (nothing related to the nowadays pandemic ambiance, thank you very much).
This is Book 2. Aliens and humans worthy of them dominate the human race. Jaisa won't hear that, and, even as she's treated like a second-hand mistress, she strives to make a difference. Not an easy picture, though, and she has to suffer demeaning treatment while smiling and batting her lashes to get what she needs to remain sane.
But it's Naeemah who catches this reader's attention. She's an innocent... well, almost .... trapped in the rebellion. I like her sweet nature, which hides a steely personality she's just discovering.
You'll want to keep reading this fast-paced, intriguing rebellion from humans who don't seem to stand a chance.

Thanks to the 5th City Chronicles, my anxiety dreams now include alien invasion! 😅 In this book, the invasion is complete. Most of humanity is dead. A few traitors to their race work happily for the new "gods," in exchange for the privileges of Companions and servants. But humans are survivors, and as always, a remnant survives.

In book 2, Jaisa is more confident than when she started out, in how much she can do for the rebels and the oppressed, even if her duties as a Companion grow more loathsome. (I appreciate that those duties are not described on the page!) She cares about the servants who are being exploited to keep the world running, but her public visibility makes it hard to act directly. We also get to watch the resistance grow and take shape from the points of view of Connor, its de facto leader, and Naeemah, a former Companion trainee who unexpectedly survived.

I enjoyed watching the humans try to outwit the gods. The ways they say one thing and mean another are a mystery to telepathic aliens, but it's fun to watch the puzzle and see the strategies unfold. I also liked learning more about how the gods control people and drones, especially through Eo, a clone/creation whose mind is vulnerable. Through it all, Jaisa's persistent humanity and faith in her species shines through, and we rejoice for all her small victories, even if the gods seem to gain the upper hand. Excited to keep reading this series!

We pick up with Jaisa again in Project EO. And now we actually get to meet EO, the weapon that will crush any chance at freedom Jaisa and the others might have.
Book 2 is even more of a thrilling roller coaster as the stakes continue to rise. Watching my favorite characters face obstacle after obstacle thrown at them, this book leaves me at the edge of my seat wanting more! I can’t wait for the third book and luckily I don’t think I’ll have to wait for very long.

As good as the first one. I enjoy how this science fiction novel isn't so far fetched that that it becomes a farse. Getting the third now.

I tore through this book even faster than the first one. In the continuing story of what happens to the humans who survive an alien invasion, we meet Eo, the creation of the main character Jaisa's mad scientist husband. Eo is meant to destroy the rebels but Jaisa soon learns that Eo is just as much victim as perpetrator. Jaisa has to decide whether to rebel and risk what relationships she has or remain enslaved.

Project Eo is a masterpiece. Sprague’s plot runs at full throttle all the way through this book, rocketing along at a breathless clip. But despite that, the pacing of Project Eo is well done; while reading this I never felt left behind or confused. The clear language and evocative style of Sprague’s writing is unique to her.

Eo the character is one of the saddest characters I’ve come to know in this series, and given the range of the cast, that’s saying something. The Red Angel, Jaisa, is still fascinating, playing four-dimensional chess with the alien ”gods” and their priestesses and Chosen. I love to hate Neriso, and I feel terrible for Tavar. And Naeemah and Connor’s relationship is a gorgeous example of what it means to love someone in a desperate situation.

If I could give Project Eo more stars than 5, I would. Overall, I give Sprague’s work a 10/10.
