- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2022I was unceremoniously thrown into a different reality the moment I started reading this book. I didn’t expect it, so I closed my Kindle and sat for a while, images of Pine Lodge Pack shifters already vivid before my eyes.
“Hunter’s Fated Wait” by W.A. Edwards is set a few decades into the future. But the world is vastly different from the way we know it. It was fascinating to explore it, diving deeper and deeper into the shifter pack dynamics and also the inner workings of Hunter and Ali’s minds.
First, you must know that Ali is a complete badass. And she isn’t like someone any girl can easily become given the right motivation. She is unique in her fierceness – sometimes feistiness even – but she is also kind, compassionate, and passionate about making other people’s lives better.
Hunter is a leader who’s never thought he’d become one but who turned out to be perfect for the role.
Complete immersion into the reality created by the author is what I especially liked in this book. I could easily imagine myself having breakfast in the busy Pack’s House dining room, grabbing yet another blueberry muffin before they all get snatched away by hungry shifters. I could imagine talking to Lisa, Ali’s pregnant friend whose knowledgeability could easily be mistaken for love for gossip. But that very quality proved to be virtually life-saving.
While reading, I was cocooned in the feeling of familiarity and warmth as if the characters were my close friends. I felt totally invested in the Pine Lodge shifters' vigorous work to improve their pack’s life. The author made their enthusiasm and dedication seep from the pages.
The idea of living in a gated community made me think about the advantages and disadvantages of such living arrangements. As with most things in life, even if something works flawlessly, a crack in the generally positive picture is usually some individual’s fault.
Reading Ali and Hunter’s story was a wonderful experience, and I’m looking forward to reading Leo’s story next. Let’s just say, his eating habits are very similar to mine :)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2023This debut novel by W. A. Edwards was a good read with an interesting storyline. My only issue with the book was there were very long passages that could have been left out of the story and it would still have been awesome.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2022Hunter's Fated Wait is a paranormal shifter tale with a slow-building romance. When the alpha leader of the Pine lodge Pack runs off, Hunter becomes the pack's new alpha. He soon learns that the prior alpha, Mark, was not just a coward, but also a neglectful leader who failed to give his pack the care and leadership they deserved. The romance in this story takes a back seat to other concerns as Hunter takes steps to improve the lives of his new pack members. When he meets Ali, a fierce young female whose fighting skills may surpass his own, Hunter knows immediately that Ali is his mate, but she does not; she is not yet 20, the age when female werewolves gain the ability to recognize their mates. So, to Hunter's frustration, he comes to the conclusion he must hide the fact from Ali until she is of age. His decision becomes ever more challenging when Ali makes decisions that could threaten her safety. This story stood out to me for having a strong, female main character who was given a vital position of leadership in which she appears to be more than capable. This is part one of a series, and the ending makes it clear there is much more adventure to come!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2023"Hunter's Fated Wait" is a "fated mates" PNR with a twist: one of the pair can't really feel it yet.
In the book's setting, shifters can sense their fated mate once they turn twenty--and when they do, sparks fly. When Hunter takes over the Pine Lodge pack as its new alpha, he quickly notices its long-absent daughter, Ali, and he's old enough to know what he's feeling. But Ali is still nineteen and facing her own challenges: mourning her mother, fitting back into her family and pack, proving herself as an Enforcer, and perhaps seeking revenge against the architect of her recent heartache. Thus, the romance is set for a slow burn while Hunter impatiently waits for his mate to come of age and recognize him...that is, if she makes it to twenty.
If you like your paranormal romance hot and steamy, this probably isn't the book for you. But if you prefer slower growth and plenty of world-building, give it a try.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2023Hunter's Fated Wait is a pleasant fated mate story with some great strong female characters. It is a good story about love, duty, trust, and betrayal. It has two issues that matter to me, but may not be a problem for other readers.
One issue is a massive data dump at the beginning of the book about things which have happened before chapter one. It was enough data that I thought I'd accidentally started a series at book 2. Luckily once it's over, it's over and you can move on.
This other issue is there is very little world building, and what there is occurs too late in the story. The plot is very pack-centric, so for approximately a third of the book I wasn't even sure if there were humans in this world at all. About halfway into the book you get some mention about what's going on with humans, but you're never actually quite sure if werewolves are a secret or not. This doesn't hurt the plot of the book, but if you like world building (and I do) then you can feel the lack keenly.
Your mileage may differ.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2024Hunter is the new alpha of the Pine Ridge pack. Ali comes in blazing like a star, taking his enforcers by storm. He soon realizes shes his fated mate but she doesnt know yet, not until she turns 20 in a month. So she takes over as his head of security and they get closer. This only intesifies when she is kidnapped. Hunter has to find her. Hes not whole without her.

4.0 out of 5 stars A shifter tale with a slow-building romance.
W.A. Edwards’ “Hunter’s Fated Wait” is set a few decades into a dystopian future, when a virus has caused the death of half of humanity.
Hunter assumes the role of Alpha of Pine Lodge Pack when Mark, the previous leader, runs off. He faces many challenges since Mark was a negligent leader who didn’t give his pack the attention and leadership they needed.
When Hunter and Ali meet, he knows in an instant that they are fated to be together. She cannot do this yet because she is not yet twenty years old, the age when female werewolves gain the ability to recognize their mates.
The Pine Lodge Pack is where Ali and Hunter will find out their destiny. Through their point of view, the reader gains insight into Hunter’s and Ali’s thoughts and the dynamics of the shapeshifter pack.
The story presents Hunter as a caring leader who strives to improve the lives of his people, while Ali is depicted as a fierce female shifter. Even though Edwards didn’t idealize them, I would have liked more character development.
On the whole, the supernatural romance is a heartwarming story that enthralls the reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, Engaging Read
"Hunter's Fated Wait" by W A Edwards was a delight to read. Ali was a strong female protagonist, independent and loving. Hunter, although the new Alpha of a pack abandoned by their previous Alpha, never came off as domineering. He listened to his pack, took their suggestions, and showed so much patience and understanding throughout the story. I loved reading about these two getting to know each other, become friends to more.
I enjoyed the story: the range of characters and the humor mixed with tense times. My only issue, which held me back from giving a higher rating, was the book's opening (and some other areas throughout the novel like some of the lessons/competition fight scenes) felt heavy on telling the reader what was going on instead of showing them through actions/words. The opening made me think I had missed something since the story starts almost mid-way through a plot. The battle between packs is just told to the reader. I'd have love to have seen some snippets of what had happened leading to Hunter becoming Alpha, either while it happened or in a flashback later on.
I appreciated that the romance aspect of the novel took it's time to build, so allow the characters to get to know each other first. However, I wish her birthday had come into the story earlier than it did. I wanted a few more chapters seeing them as a couple.
Overall, I found the characters engaging and the story interesting. Well done W A Edwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book.
I really enjoyed this book.
I found it on Twitter, & even though I have so many books to read already, I got into this one as soon as I finished my last read.
I like to read on the bus while I'm out & about, I never seem to find the time at home.
I took the longer route a few times, to give me more reading time.
On one journey, I actually went past my stop, I was so engrossed in the story. This has never happened before. I'm looking forward to Book 2, when it's released.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read I would highly recommend
Being a fan of werewolves, I was intrigued by this novel at a glance and was delighted to discover that this book is excellent and very well written.
The characters Alison and Hunter are likable, very interesting and I enjoyed their interactions between themselves and others of the packs.
I look forward to the sequel and would wholeheartedly encourage others to read it.
