The scene for book 9 in this award-winning series is laid when Professor Aimee Loong hires Lani as a dogsitter for her French bulldog, Oolong. As Lani and Aimee grew closer, she joins Aimee in her search for a family artifact of significant value — a Chinese lacquered box that has been missing for centuries.
It matches two other similar boxes, and when brought together they are rumored to contain a powerful message: How to grow the best Oolong tea, a variety that dates back to the time of the Chinese emperors. Although this appears to be of minor importance to the common person, to Professor Loong's family the tea's value is immeasurable. If Aimee finds the missing box, her family's farm could rely on that secret technique for many more successful years producing the prized tea.
But when the professor is found dead and Lani vanishes, Cat enters the picture. She must rely on her wits — and the help of her Mahjong-loving mother and a group of amateur sleuths — to uncover the truth.
Wilson weaves a complex mystery filled with unexpected twists and charming characters.
Fans of cozy mysteries will appreciate the quirky cast, from the fiercely loyal Mahjong
Mamas to the ever-watchful bulldog who holds more secrets than he lets on. The interplay between Hawaiian culture, ancient family rivalries, and modern-day murder gives this story a fresh, engaging angle.
The storyline gives readers enough curious details to keep them eagerly turning the pages as they search for clues. As heart-pounding excitement builds, you are immersed in the danger of a rivalry that stretches back to the days when the emperor sat upon his throne in the Forbidden City.
As with previous entries in the Barkview Mysteries, Wilson doesn't shy away from blending humor, heart, and suspense.
Puppied to Death balances the charm of its dog-centric world with a genuinely puzzling mystery that will keep readers guessing. Pair that with well-developed characters who you'll root for throughout the adventure, and you're in for a T-R-E-A-T.
For dog lovers and cozy mystery fans alike, Puppied to Death delivers a satisfying tale of intrigue and charm. From the Author
The hardest part of writing Puppied was deciding which of my many experiences should be included. A trip to the North Shore had to be there. I love the lush scenery, ocean views and lunch in Haleiwa. Let's not forget seeing the turtles sunning on Turtle Beach. (Yes, the turtles are there on the sand, and Haleiwa Joe's has the best peanut chicken salad.)
Tea at the Moana Surf is another favorite, which led me to taste test oolong tea. I think I have twenty varieties in my tea collection now.
My visit to Chinatown inspired me in so many ways. The rich history and culture is so much a part of Hawaii that it had to be included in the story. The Hawaii Theater and dragon statues are iconic. The dim sum was amazing. I experienced Look Fun for the first time, and I'm hooked. (I tasted the Char Shu Pork and mushroom. Yum) The duck was well...
Eastern medicine has always intrigued me. I admit I am a yogi of sorts. Visiting my first Chinese Herbal Medicine shop was fascinating. I don't suggest you go in asking what herbs can kill someone, though. The doctor wasn't amused. Even after I showed him my book, I'm not sure he believed I was only interested in killing a character. Makes you wonder...
And Mahjong.... That's another story.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025Cat's journey to Hawaii reminded me of my time on the islands. I loved the mystery woven into familiar places. I Loved the Mahjong clues. Never saw the end coming. Great read. I can't wait for the next book.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2025The author is new to me, but she is an excellent one. The book is about a reporter whose sister goes missing after someone gets murdered and gets pinned on her. It is up to Cat to go find her sister and prove her innocence, along with 2 dogs and a sassy cat. This book is funny and an excellent read. The plot is easy to read and the characters and full of life. I highly recommend this book and I have started to read the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025This was a nice change from Barkview. It is good to get out of town and have new scenery and people. No matter where Cat is, she manages to find murder and, of course, dogs that she must care for. Called home to Hawaii to help find her sister and save her from a murder rap, Cat has the help of family and friends to get this figured out before the police find her sister. Some fun characters in the Majong Mama's and we get to know Cat's family a little more. A fun read and fun to try to figure out who-dun-it before the end of the book. I didn't. I received an ARC and I am happy to give (voluntarily) a positive review for such a great book
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2025Thank you to the author and Get Red PR Books for the free book. These opinions are my own.
First and most important, the book really does include precisely the puppies and cat featured on the cover!
This book was such a fun romp of mystery and pets. There's some magic and lots of adventure. I really enjoyed seeing Cat Hawl working with her mother and aunts to solve a murder and find her sister in Hawaii. And Cat's relationship with her husband was fantastic.
This book kept me engaged throughout and often laughing at the pets. And it made me want to learn to play mahjong and grow orchids. It's a fun escape.
Rounded up to 4 stars
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025Puppied to Death is the next installment in the Barkview Mysteries book series and is another mystery filled with twists and surprises. This time, Cat is taken away from Barkview making an emergency trip home to Hawaii to rescue her sister, Lani.
In Hawaii, her mom and her mom's Miss Marple Mahjong ladies are on the case. Eventually, Russ, Cat's husband, and the Commander, Cat's step-father, join the search as well. It is good that the Mahjong ladies are involved because they have local contacts that Cat needs.
The concept of ohana is explored and the book is filled with quirky characters. Of course, there are adorable puppies and even a cat in this book too. This was a fun read with a skillfully woven mystery. I recommend this book.
I received a free advance copy and this is my honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2025This is my least favorite book in the series. I was so looking forward to the puppies. There are only two dogs, one of them is not a puppy, but there is a cat. Poor Snooper does not get much time/action in the book and often disappears from the story especially at the end. The entire Chinese history was confusing. Some of the characters were called by first or last name at times making it hard to figure out who they where.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2025Puppied to Death takes mystery-solving sleuth Cat Hawl to Hawaii where her sister has gone missing after discovering a dead body. There’s a new cast of quirky characters, featuring her mother’s mahjong group, the Miss Marple Mahjong Mamas, a French bulldog, a beagle puppy, and a cat, as well as some familiar characters to lend a hand. Along the way, Cat encounters twists and turns sprinkled with an interesting assortment of clues.
I found Puppied to Death to be a fun and satisfying cozy mystery and I think others will, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2025What could be more pleasant than a week on Oahu? Not having to figure out who murdered a tea sommelier while spending a week in Oahu. Cheryl Wilson takes readers on a wild ride around the tea plantations, orchid farms, Chinese tea houses and the beaches as she weaves this clever tale. With two adorable pups to help Cat Hawl cannot possibly fail.
