Review
"Linux Visual Guide" is a super helpful book if you're just starting out with Linux. It explains everything step by step, so it's really easy to follow along even if you're a complete beginner. The book covers all the basics, like how to use the Vim editor, manage commands, and handle remote servers.
What I liked most about this book is that it's full of pictures and diagrams that make everything clearer. You can actually see what you need to do, which helps a lot when you're trying to understand something new. The book is laid out in a way that makes you feel more confident as you learn more advanced stuff step by step.
I found the sections about using the Vim editor and managing commands really useful because they take things that seem complicated and make them simple. The tips on how to work with remote servers are also great if you think you might need to use Linux for work or more serious projects.
If you want to start learning Linux, I'd definitely recommend "Linux Visual Guide." It's straightforward, easy to understand, and has everything you need to get going. It's a great choice for anyone new to Linux or looking to brush up on the basics.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Very Helpful
As someone who has wrestled with countless tech manuals, I can honestly say that this book is a refreshing departure from the norm. - Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2024Format: KindleLinux Visual Guide is a solid resource for beginners looking to dive into the world of Linux. The book excels in providing step-by-step instructions that make even complex topics accessible, from basic commands to advanced concepts like scripting and network management. The visual aids, such as pictures and diagrams, are particularly helpful, making the learning process smoother, especially for those who are new to the Linux environment.
However, while the guide is packed with valuable information, it does have some shortcomings. For someone with a background in Windows-based computing, the book's organization can be a bit disorienting. The introduction dives straight into command-line usage and advanced topics without first establishing a foundational understanding of basic computing concepts like the GUI or operating system fundamentals. This approach might leave true beginners feeling lost or overwhelmed.
The book would greatly benefit from a restructured introduction that explains the basics of Linux, including its history and how it compares to other operating systems like Windows. Additionally, a comprehensive glossary of terms at the beginning would make it easier for readers to follow along, especially when encountering unfamiliar concepts.
In conclusion, while Linux Visual Guide offers a thorough and methodical approach to mastering Linux, its current structure may not be the best fit for absolute beginners. It’s a useful resource, but one that might require additional supplementation for those completely new to computing.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am no stranger to window-based computing.
Yet, I needed help understanding the basic concepts in this book. The book should open with the basics: defining an operating system, the GUI, and other basic computing.
Instead, the introduction begins with command-line prompts, an AWS Lightsail browser-based SSH client, and sample files, which the user is supposed to download from their phone or Kindle to access. The book also calls itself a “course,” meaning it must have supplemental materials the user is intended to use when learning, though I am uncertain how one would utilize these when reading the book.
I was utterly lost when I reached the next part of the book, which defined those terms and introduced the history of Linux.
As a long-time Windows user, I recently acquired a Steam deck and developed an interest in harnessing the full potential of Linux and Ubuntu. This book would be my gateway to a new world of computing.
While I found the book's approach more suitable for those with a basic understanding of computing, it could bridge the gap between basic and advanced knowledge. If the book had started with GUI, OS, and other basic computer information, it could have been more accessible to beginners.
Because of this, I cannot recommend this book in its current iteration.
The chapters must be rearranged to make them more user-friendly, and a comprehensive glossary of terms must be provided prior to the opening chapters or even within the introduction. The introduction is also a great place to introduce the reader to Linux and Unbuntu as alternative open-source operating systems to Windows, describe how they came to be, and give some interesting use cases.
Finally, the author needs to consider his audience: Is this book for someone who has some basic computing skills but is unfamiliar with Linux/Ubuntu, or for the complete beginner who has no idea how to begin computing with a completely different operating system? This consideration is crucial for the book's success.
