The Lady Under the Lake: M/M Paranormal Mystery (Quest Investigations Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 271 ratings

This client is all wet...

After receiving a hot tip on the whereabouts of my almost-boyfriend’s nearly-ex-husband (hey, I told you—it’s complicated!), I thought my love life was finally coming up for air. But when we stake out the remote lake, it’s not the ex who surfaces.

It’s the Faerie King’s long-missing mother (and I mean really long, as in double-digit centuries), and she wants to hire Quest Investigations. Since one of my bosses is the king’s brother, he has a tsunami of…feelings about her as a potential client, and refuses to take the case. Instead, he passes it to me.

Yes! However…

Should I be thrilled at the vote of confidence or suspicious that he’s tossing me in the deep end without a life preserver, the better to punish the woman who abandoned her kid all those years ago?

You know what? It doesn’t matter. I may be Quest’s token human, but I’ve proven I can get the job done, so I dive right in. Then the lady explains what she wants me to do: find her missing child.

Seriously? I expected more of a challenge. All I have to do is introduce her to the king and bingo, case closed. But when she says, "Not that one," this little family drama threatens to send ripples throughout the supernatural community—especially with my boss in over his head as the prime suspect in a fae kidnapping.

As if things weren’t complicated enough… Remember that nearly-ex? When he shows up and muddies the waters, I’m faced with a choice: I can solve this case or I can finally hook my almost-boyfriend.

Dammit.

The Lady Under the Lake is the third in the Quest Investigations M/M mystery series, a spinoff of E.J. Russell’s Mythmatched paranormal rom-com story world. It contains no on-page sex or violence, and although there is a romantic subplot, it is not a romance. The series is best read in order.

About the Author

E.J. Russell (she/her), author of the award-winning Mythmatched paranormal romance series, writes LGBTQ+ romance and mystery in a rainbow of flavors. Count on high snark, low angst, and happy endings.

Reality? Eh, not so much.

She's married to Curmudgeonly Husband, a man who cares even less about sports than she does. Luckily, C.H. also loves to cook, or all three of their children (Lovely Daughter and Darling Sons A and B) would have survived on nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, and Satsuma mandarins (the extent of E.J.'s culinary skill set).

E.J. also writes traditional cozy mystery as Nelle Heran. She lives in rural Oregon, enjoys visits from her wonderful adult children, and indulges in good books, red wine, and the occasional hyperbole.

Multi-Rainbow Award winner E.J. 4.5 Ughhhhh this book hurt me. In more than one way. But I loved it so much… I thought I was gonna have to throw hands with Lachlan. And I did NOT see that twist coming.

The Lady Under the Lake is an excellent continuation of the Quest Investigations series.
These characters continue to hold my interest, as do the well-crafted storylines.
The investigation Hugh/Matt is tasked with is exciting and suspenseful, and I enjoyed figuring out the answers as the story went along. There is good flow throughout the piece as they work the case and move closer to solving the romantic aspect of the series.
The secondary characters support the storyline and add more color and humor to the piece.
To understand everything going on, reading the first two books is necessary. They are just as well-written as this book.
Quest Investigations has been, so far, an excellent series, and I can't wait for the next book.
I look forward to more from this author.

The continuing saga of Lachlan and Matthew….continues.

I’ve enjoyed this twisty, convoluted, and sometimes incredibly confusing world that the author has created. I really like how Matthew, who is human, seems to be the catalyst for all things weird at Quest Investigations. A long forgotten queen, a missing child, time issues, and will Lachlan ever get his divorce? Just a few confusing questions that are in dire need of explaining.

This is possibly the most interesting supernatural series I’ve read character wise. Definitely needs to be read as part of the series or the reader will never get over the confusion. I still get lost sometimes with all the names and the do’s and dont’s of the Fae world.

Jordan and Doop rule!!!!! Seriously, Doop is the best hellhound ever.

I just love Matts little team of Eleri, Jordan and Doop and how Matt adds powerful friends and allies among the way.

Matt can try all he wants but a dryad, a werewolf and a hellhound will accompany him asked or not. In this book his little team gets a case on their own an it ties together with Matts almost boyfriends almost ex husband. Complicated? Yes!

The plot was engaging, the overall story is moving forward I a great way and it's all done in a book with wonderful characters.

There are so many amazing characters in the Mythmatched Universe that I never get tired of hearing more about their stories. This update has an original take on the secret baby trope, literal found family, and an adorably vengeful hell hound. Oh and there's a long-awaited kiss too.

A bit more comedy than romance, this time around, but the supporting cast shines, especially Jordan. And we get yet more details about the hidden world of magic in Oregon.

This corner of the world seems taken with Celtic mythology, wonder if other pantheons settled up and down the West Coast. And what if First Nation magical beings, where are they? Deep in a pocket universe of their own?

I’m adoring this series! Matt is a great character to see through the eyes of. His and Lachlan’s relationship is finally starting to take off and I’ve really liked the journey so far.

I would seriously read anything in this world or dimension or pocket dimension with these characters. They are all amazing and loveable!

This is definitely not a standalone, so read the preceding 2 books, and if possible, read the preceding 2 series, as well. Without that previous information, this book will be a well-written, confusing bunch of happenings. This is considered a spinoff series - meaning it should stand alone. It really doesn't. There are many references to previous happenings, Quest investigations, relationships, etc. that happened in one of the two related series. Without having that background, it does feel somewhat like I'm adrift in this new supe world without a guide.

However, the book, what I could enjoy without having the previous series knowledge, was well written and captivating. It made me want to get the previous series to find out all the things that happened that are referred to. I wish this book could stand more on it's own, it would have been much more enjoyable.

This book continues the story of Matt (Hugh Mann) and Lachlan and the situation with Wyn that was started in the first 2 books of this series. This entry is dedicated to finding Wyn so that Matt and Lachlan can move on with their relationship.

We have Herne (with Hunt appearances) and Jordan with Doop (I LOVE Doop!) , along with Eleri and her newly-introduced clan leader (we "met" him by name previously, but not in "person" before) appearing in here. Eleri takes a bit of a backseat, but her horrible clan leader plays a wonderful villain, proving she's been right to complain of him and his irritable attitude all along. I love the introduction to more of the Fae family. We meet Eamon, get more information on Quest's owner's relationships. We meet a changeling. And learn more of the "Traditional" rules the old gods put in place without worrying about the consent of the persons affected. I, like Matt, despise these traditions and am fully on Eleri's side that things need to be shook up!

I still don't have enough information to fully enjoy this book. It's interesting, bringing along a bunch of old myths/gods/folklore together and reshaping them into a modern supernatural world, but I really need to get the older series read. 4 stars

Another wild case for Matt as he takes on something that once again the bosses can't/won't work on and learns new things about this supernatural world he is in!

Matt's quest to find Lachlan's errant husband leads instead to a water based fae who is looking for her son and just so happens to be mother to the King of Faerie. This leads to quite the tension at the offices and makes it that Matt needs to take the case to make sure things are neutral and the case given due attention. It shows how much Matt has gone from the first book as he truly takes this case with confidence and a knack for looking at things from a different perspective that helps find solutions others don't see.

It is fascinating how these stories really take the old myths and shine a modern light on them. If there truly were creatures that had to follow these strict rules it would be horrible and hopefully some would try to protect them, but likely others would take advantage. Matt has the open minded position of learning about the supernatural 'rules' from the people who has them imposed upon them, and he tends to look upon them critically and consider exactly what it means for that person. This way of investigating has made him more receptive than his bosses at times and it has also afforded him many allies along the way. In fact, Matt finally realizes that he has a team that he lead while he works and they too are getting better at this whole thing. As Matt leads his team and leans on his allies he follows down a road that surprisingly may finally lead him to Lachlan, but the case has to come first.

A well done journey with just the right mix of supernatural twists, modern ingenuity, and supportive investigation. This case manages to tie up a few lingering loose ends from previous stories, which is very well done, while hinting towards some further discoveries yet to be made before the series is done. Looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up!

I got a free ARC of this book, however I had already preordered it when I read Five Dead Herrings, so odds were good this was going to be a positive review ARC or no ARC. Getting the ARC was just pure happiness.

I would defintely say this book cannot be read out of order, if you find the premise of this book interesting go to the first book and start reading. Character's are sort of explained, but you get much more depth and enjoyment knowing them all from the start. For side characters, Jordan and Doop are amazing and I love the growth Jordan has gone on throughout the entire series. Honestly I can't wait for him to get his own book and he's much more ready for it now than he was when we first met him in Howling on Hold. (that's a different series and not needed to understand this one)

I didn't quite get Niall's actions throughout the book, it just seemed ... odd. But maybe they'll get expanded on in the next book. Eleri is her usual sassy self and I really enjoyed the rest of the cast.

Now to the main characters Matt remains a favourite I honestly love him in this book. Per the author's intent the Romance is a subplot and this book more than any other it has really felt on the back burner. Which is a good thing because there's so much else going on that there isn't the time to dedicate to a romance. However a touch more communication between himself and Lachlann would have been appreciated as they edged a little close to the stupid miscommunication trope.

The mystery itself wasn't necessarily complicated, the answer being in the first couple of chapters, but the journey to find the person required kept me interested and rapidly turning pages.

It is with great trepidation and excitement that I wait the last in this series.
