Quite by Chance (Meredith & Hodge Novels Book 7) Kindle Edition
John Meredith has been coerced into joining a group of friends, in a castle on top of a mountain, for the Christmas holiday. His irritation at being dragged away from home soon dissipates, as he relaxes in the picturesque surroundings, enjoying the company of good friends. Even the sudden snow storm is accepted without complaint; it will be a white Christmas. But then Patsy Hodge discovers a dead body in the salt box.
The murderer must be a member of the family who own the castle or one of the staff. No one can get into the castle or leave until they discover who that is.
The shock discovery of a second body reveals that either someone has keys to the castle, or an intruder is one step ahead of them. A trap is set to catch the killer before anyone else is murdered, but will it succeed?
Quite by chance is a gripping murder mystery in M K Turner's popular Meredith & Hodge detective series.

About the author
Marcia has enjoyed writing for many years, but originally only for pleasure and friends or family. Marcia wrote Murderous Mishaps for a friend, who after regaling her with all the latest gossip said 'they wouldn't believe you if you wrote it down.' So she did. All based on true stories, but totally exaggerated, of course.
Since then, Marcia has written the ongoing Meredith & Hodge crime series. The Bearing Witness series, which has a touch of the paranormal & a cozy mystery series, The Little Compton Mysteries. She is currently working on a new series, introducing JJ Jenson. There have also been a few standalone novels, but yes, they are all murder/mysteries. So far. . .
Marcia is married, with two children, two grandchildren, two German Shepherds. They live in Bristol, UK.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2018Meredith and Hodge are celebrating Christmas on top of a mountain in a castle. They have to take a cable car. None of this is too John's likings as he is afraid of heights. They make it to the castle and there is one of the most dysfunctional families you would ever want to meet! The husband can't keep his hands to himself, the daughter is overdue on her pregnancy, the chef is the husband's bastard son, only the husband doesn't know this, the wife is drunk and the maid has eyes for their other son who quits being the butler. Then the electricity goes out and they find a dead body in the salt box, oh and a storm is on the way....a big one! Can Meredith and Hodge solve this murder and who the person is? There is humor, and mystery in this book. Will there be a Merry Christmas at the castle? You will need to read the book to find out.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2018This was not my favorite Meredith and Hodge novel. There was too much mucking about and the cast of characters, other than our hero, heroine, and their usual team, were beyond annoying. Don't get me wrong; it was still a good mystery even though it did take an inordinately long time to get to who/why. My impression is that Turner quite enjoyed and amused herself writing it. I stuck with it, but didn't enjoy the read as much as anticipapted. If you are a huge fan of Turner's and M&H, you might not be as critical of this book as I found myself to be. Again, it's not a bad book. Just not one of my favorites. Oh, and I wish she had taken the time to tie up one of the plot lines before the end as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2018When I first started reading I thought, oh shades of Agatha Christie. The book went way beyond Christie! The setting is a mountaintop castle with limited access and many secrets. Meredith and Hodge and friends are soon in the thick of it all. I often figure out who the killer is about midway but not this time. It was a huge surprise. This is the best Meredith and Hodge book so far and I have read and loved them all.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2018Former DCI John Meredith and his girlfriend, Patsy Hodge, join a group of friends at a castle for the Christmas holiday. He’s not too thrilled with the situation, but he’s trying to be a good sport. A surprise fierce snowstorm traps the party at the castle, and then hen Patsy finds a body in the salt box. The murderer must be a member of the family who owns the castle, or one of the staff, because everyone in the party is involved in law enforcement, so it couldn’t be any of them. Meredith, Hodge, and the crew have to figure out who the guilty party is before more bodies start dropping.
I am a huge fan of this author and Meredith and Hodge. The previous six entries in this series have all been five star, edge-of-my-seat reading. The crimes are always dark and gritty, the characters flawed but compelling, and the relationships between the characters complex. This seventh entry left me a little … annoyed. And mildly disappointed. It’s like the author took a hard left into locked English drawing room Agatha Christie territory, which was not what I was expecting. I had difficulty reconciling my image of Meredith and the team with how they were all behaving on holiday. I felt like I was reading the pod version of Meredith; Meredith “lite”. And it frustrated me.
The writing was fine, the settings well-described, and the characters dimensional, but the plot itself left something to be desired. The first third of the book was very slow for me. It focused mostly on the family who owned the castle, and the staff who worked there, and I found them boring and annoying. After the first crime occurred, things began to pick up speed, and Meredith started morphing back into his crabby, short-tempered, brilliant, driven self – the character I have come to love.
The ending was a complete surprise, and the author put a nice bow on Meredith and Hodge’s relationship, so I give this three stars. The other Meredith and Hodge stories have all been five-star, and I am hoping future books will return to that.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2019Enjoyed this part of the Meredith and Hodge saga very much. It was neat having them away from the usual Bristol and seeing them as more regular folk, sort of! Still doing police work but a very different Agatha Christie style, as always the true villain not known until the end. On to the next book 8!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2020I loved each and every character as they were introduced and since I knew most of them, until the new ones in "Quite by Chance", this Castle and this new "family" was such a perfect setting and group for an awesome murderous adventure!
Thank you again!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2019Meredith and Hodge travel to a Scottish Castle with friends for a holiday getaway. Relaxing plans go by the wayside when bodies start turning up.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2018I absolutely loved Meredith and Hodge when I first discovered this series. I waited with great anticipation for this new installment. I hate to say I found it disappointing. There were too many characters. The whole thing was too Agatha Christie-ish. To me, it lacked a certain seriousness. Patsy Hodge was barely a player, and I felt Meredith was portrayed a little too lightly. His personality in the earlier books felt stronger and just MORE. Anyway, I still look forward to the next book about these two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Marcia
I love all of Marcia’s books, both Meredith and Hodge and the Bearing Witness series, suffice to say I am a Marcia groupie. This latest Meredith and Hodge was one of the best. Slightly different in tone and scenario, with the gang all being stuck in a Scottish hotel over Christmas (who doesn’t love a good Christmas book), and more comedy and a touch of farce taboot. It rattled along at a great pace, an excellent thriller, and no, I didn’t guess who.dun.it till the writer made the big reveal. Up there with the best of her work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite good
I’m hooked on this series, but was a bit disappointed in this one. The story line did not keep my attention as much as the other books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic “who done it”
The latest Meredith & Hodge was a little different being away from Bristol. I liked it that Meredith was not always arguing with Hodge and all his old team and friends were involved in the story.
I was thrown as to the culprit of the murders until the end.
A great read, here’s looking forward to the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the wait!....
Yet another great Meredith & Hodge story, I really hope they manage to get hitched soon....I love Peggy she is a hoot...the descriptions of the characters enable the reader to get a feel for them..I personally like to get a face in my head that makes it play out in my head as I’m reading and Marcia makes this so easy.
I glad I’m not the only one whose Christmas’s don’t turn out as planned...luckily none of mine have included murders! ....
Looking forward to the next one with bated breath......
