Something Unavoidable: An MM Enemies to Lovers Romance (Split Rock Ranch Book 6) Kindle Edition
Keegan Reid knows what he wants. He’s happy with his practice, his dogs, his cabin, and volunteering with the local animal rescue. What he doesn’t need is chaos—and Izzy King is chaos incarnate. Yet somehow, that doesn’t prevent him from picking up the verbal gauntlet every time Izzy throws it down. There’s something about Izzy that won’t let him turn the other cheek.
Izzy and Keegan might fight like cats and dogs—but everyone knows that high emotions often hide explosive chemistry. Keegan thinks they’d be a good fit if Izzy gave him a chance. But apparently, that old saying about leading a horse to water also applies to stubborn ranch hands. Izzy’s got a past that makes him prone to bolting, and Keegan needs to decide if he wants to tame another feral creature.
Something Unavoidable is book six in the Split Rock Ranch series. It includes an age gap, sass and banter, smoking chemistry, and two guys who don’t hate each other as much as they think they do. It can be read as a standalone but the series is best read in order. Look inside for important CW.

About the author

Rory Maxwell discovered romance novels on her mom’s bookshelf when she was probably too young to be reading them—the reward for being a nosy kid with great reading comprehension. The magic of a dial-up internet connection led her to the wonderful world of MM fanfiction a few years later and she fell in love with the genre. In 2019 she woke up with a plot bunny, opened a word doc, and started trying to figure out how this writing stuff worked.
Rory grew up outside of Washington, DC, moved away, and then came back for reasons she doesn’t fully understand. An artist and writer, she always has too many exciting ideas and not nearly enough free time. One day, she hopes to escape to the mountains where she can work from home and write as much as she wants. In the meantime, she splits her time between her day job and writing MM romance with heart, heat, and happy endings.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2025As much as the romance genre celebrates its tropes, how authors never hesitate to make those tropes serve their stories without losing the heart of what readers expect is one of my favorite things about the genre. Izzy and Keegan are never traditional enemies the way one might expect from an "enemies to lovers" story; however, Maxwell uses fantastic characterization to give them the same epic clashes and dramatic encounters that will clearly lead to something much more as the men finally see each other beyond the surface. This book can be read as a stand-alone, but I think the secondary characters shine better as a community if you've met them previously, allowing me to fully appreciate the support they provide for Izzy's mental health. Though Izzy undergoes the more dramatic journey in this book, Keegan's quieter arc is just as important and satisfying when the two men feel safe enough to accept the love that might be reluctantly offered but definitely feels unavoidable at the close of this lovely happily ever after.
Disclaimer: I received a digital review copy of this book from the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2025This is an age gap, small town, enemies to lovers, hurt/comfort read about Izzy and Keegan. Full of wonderful characters and a great storyline, I loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2025From previous installments, you think you know Izzy, but oh boy, you are not prepared for the depth of this man. Izzy and Keagan have been attracted odds since Izzys' arrival to Split Rock from a not so great beginning to misunderstandings that lead to men who are so right for one another to be at odds instead. When Izzys past starts coming to light, Kegan learns how wrong he was, and this man just needs someone to support and cherish him as he is. Mix in a band of beautiful animals that also accept Izzy fully into their unit, magic occurs. Yes, these two still will banter because that is who at heart they are. Now, though, it is with an understanding they are ach others person when needed and will push them to be better. Truly well done and will be with me for some time to come. I'm looking forward to more from this universe.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025Since her entrance to MM romance story telling Rory Maxwell has exploded onto the scene as a very well written author with the ability for complex world building and a cohesive story arc over multiple characters and their unique but connected lives all centered around Split Rock Ranch and Split Rock, N Carolina. In Something Unavoidable Maxwell deals with the serious topic of abuse in youth sports and the enduring effects on these youth athletes as they grow to adulthood yet also delivers a beautiful love story between Izzy and Keegan as they struggle and evolve from supposed enemies to lovers. I would highly recommend this author and am looking forward to continuation of this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2025Izzy and Keegan have a one-sided hate relationship due to misunderstandings. When they get their act together, Izzy's past explodes.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025This was a really good book. I loved poor broken Izzy. Keegan was the perfect person to tame Izzy. He was everything Izzy needed. I loved these two together and how easy they just navigated towards each other. I loved their banter too.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2024Izzy has a past in the horse jumping world but it ended badly. Now he works on the Split Rock Ranch where he butts heads with the vet, Keegan, With an enemies to lovers trope, this book excels at the enemies due to Izzy's feistiness and issues but Keegan manages to rope him into shape. Complicated by panic attacks and drunken episodes from Izzy, spicy times are interspersed with care and tending. It's an emotionally triggering book but excellently written to touch your heart. I received a copy of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and this is my voluntary opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2024Izzy is the biggest mess and it is mostly due to what he thinks of himself. He is adorable and as stubborn as can be. Keegan, the Vet, can see past most of the issues and likes what he sees. Its a fun adventure to watch them get to their happy place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good
Lots of trauma, mostly seen through the aftereffects.
Excellently represented dogs, rescued and well-loved, with their own traumas but perfect for the story.
A "devil pony" probably with a reason for its desperate ire, although not really explained in full.
And mainly, high level sports training environment, mostly off page, rendering devastating effects that take most of the book to delve through, as the protagonists learn to actually communicate about feelings instead of the wrongly socially accepted aggression they've learned to use to express themselves.
Nicely written.
