About the author

Ann Bennett is a British author of historical fiction. Her first book, Bamboo Heart: A Daughter's Quest, was inspired by researching her father's experience as a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Railway and by her own journey to uncover his story. It won the Asian Books Blog prize for fiction published in Asia in 2015, and was shortlisted for the best fiction title in the Singapore Book Awards 2016.
That initial inspiration led her to write more books about WWII in Southeast Asia - Bamboo Island: The Planter's Wife, A Daughter's Promise, Bamboo Road: The Homecoming, The Tea Planter's Club, The Amulet, and The Fortune Teller of Kathmandu. Along with The Lotus House, published in October 2024, they make up the Echoes of Empire Collection.
Ann is also the author of The Oriental Lake Collection - The Lake Pavilion and The Lake Palace, both set in British India during the 1930s and WWII, and The Lake Pagoda and The Lake Villa, set in French Indochina.
The Runaway Sisters, USA Today bestselling The Orphan House, The Child Without a Home and The Forgotten Children are set in Europe during the same era and are published by Bookouture. Her latest book, The Stolen Sisters, published on 29th November 2024 is the follow-up to The Orphan List (published by Bookouture in August this year) and is set in Poland and Germany during WWII.
A former lawyer, Ann is married with three grown up sons and a granddaughter and lives in Surrey, UK. For more details, please visit her website www.annbennettauthor

- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2024The author brilliantly weaves family history into a fascinating story of secrets revealed. Ultimately it is about love and forgiveness. Well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2024I love reading about family sagas & the secrets they uncover bc we all have them!! Recommend highly!! Loved this book I didn't want it to end!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2024Ann Bennett does it again. Family matters are often complicated. Even more so doing time of stress. This is an excellent study of life and family during the Blitz. Her descriptions of the life of an ambulance attendant are spot on. Her inclusion of the plight of LGBT folks in that era is to be commended. My only question is..how long to next book?
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2024Living in comfort in a grand house became boring for the youngest daughter. WW2 required children from prominent families to help save lives during the blitz in London. The bloodshed changed the lives of the volunteers.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2024I always enjoy reading Ann Bennett’s books…”Kiss from a Rose” did not disappoint. I got so caught up in the story that I finished the book in two days (despite all kinds of interruptions). The tumultuous WWII period in Britain was deftly and poignantly rendered. The timelines were beautifully woven together and the tempo of the book was perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2024The skeleton of the story is good. It had potential. But it fails to follow through. Rather than flesh out from the bones of the story the author tended to resort to repetition and a jumbling of thoughts. A sprinkling of eluding to possible ghost in the house that is forgotten until an obligatory mention in final chapter. The needless mentioning of co-workers names and their life summary was nothing more than a space filling because it brought nothing to the story. But the worst is that every twist and turn was completely predictable, underwhelming leaving me with the notion that the two main characters, a mother and daughter duo, are both the most clueless people. The dual timeline was like reading two different books at the same time. The author was out of sync in making a connection other than the overly obvious one. Still the story moved along and made me think maybe it would improve but at that point I was almost finished and realized that no in fact that was all the author had to offer.
