The Rabbit Hole: A paranormal horror comedy (The Sick Box Trilogy Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Demonic forces invade an amusement park.

All Jimmy Miles wanted was a fresh start. All his very pregnant sister, Bailey, wanted was to not give birth next to an animatronic elf singing “Jingle Bell Rock”. Instead, they find themselves in the middle of a full-blown Christmas coup.

Santa’s Kingdom, once a jolly wonderland of overpriced cocoa and questionable safety standards, has fallen. The Gingerbread Go-Kart Palace? Seized. The petting zoo? A lawless frontier.

And at the centre of it all sits an orange-hued, vape-puffing figure preaching propagandized conspiracy theories to a ragtag army of radicalized children. Their cries, "Make Christmas Great Again!" and "We want to know the truth about Santa!" ring out through the park.

But as Jimmy and Bailey navigate this dystopian North Pole knockoff, they realize the kids aren’t the only ones looking to break holiday traditions, for deep beneath Santa’s Lodge, an old horror is stirring.

That’s right. Karen’s back. And this time, she’s really not happy with management.

Will Jimmy and Bailey survive the War on Christmas? Can Santa’s Kingdom ever be saved? And most importantly—will Karen find a new body to possess?

A stocking stuffed with horror-comedy, political satire, holiday chaos, and more unhinged energy than a toddler after six candy canes. Buckle up. This Christmas is gonna be hell.

“…a story worthy of Douglas Adams.” Milt Theo

“The story is completely original and it is impossible to predict where the plot is going to take the reader. Jimmy’s sardonic sense of humor is a perfect balance to the darker parts of the story.” Indie Reader reviewer.

This is book two in The Sick Box Trilogy but can be read as a standalone. This was a good mix of horror, comedy and political satire. MAKE CHRISTMAS GREAT AGAIN!!! This entire story is pure chaos and it makes for such a fun read. I’ll definitely be picking up the third book when it comes out as well as snagging the first one in the series.

Once again, author Matthew Fries delivers us another heaping of pure mayhem and hilarity! EXCELLENT ending and, like The Sick Box, leaves you wanting more, I can’t wait for the next book! Through his exceptionally descriptive writing and bizarre characters, I can absolutely see this trilogy being made into an insane television series. Once again, thank you for a marvelous book!

A possessed rabbit named Karen? An angry mob of “Freedum” protesters? Hair so greasy it looked like he combed it with a pork chop? These are just a few things I loved about this book. Matthew Fries has delivered a hilarious horror comedy and political satire, The Rabbit Hole. This is the second installment in a series but can be read as a stand-alone (I’m off to read the first book, The Sick Box, now). What can I say besides his work is simply a joy to read! I loved the trip I took to Santa’s Kingdom with Jimmy and Bailey and the calamities that befell them. If you want to feel that Christmas spirit you can only experience at a theme park inhabited by demons escaped from Hell and, even worse, conspiracy theorists, don’t miss this one. 🖤

“Make Christmas Great Again” being proclaimed on the cover sets the tone for this one from the get go. Fries quickly fleshes out his story, introducing us to his cast of crazies, and setting the stage for a wild ride. While this is a sequel to The Sick Box, taking that one in first is not needed (but I will surely be doing that after this).

Fries weaves a tale here that so encapsulates the political climate and the over dissimulation of false information that has occurred here in the U.S. over the last 7 years that the humor is almost lost in how scarily crazy accurate the mirror he is putting up is. However, the humor and satire abound throughout this book, keeping it more on the light side, as long as you don’t think too deeply on the underlying critiques contained therein.

This one gives us humor, surprises, cries of FREE DUM that make your head hurt, acts of love, bravery and possibly the vilest bunny since Monty Python.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable read, and I look forward to taking more in from this world soon.

This horror comedy gem is the sequel to The Sick Box, where we meet all the key players. But The Rabbit Hole is a standalone, so if you haven't read TSB, don't let that stop you from reading this book! It's clever, hilarious, and ever so apropos given the time we live in.

My two favorite lines: "... like dirty feet and body odour, that folk festival smell..." and "... one part postdoctoral fellow, one part internet tycoon, one part wizard airbrushed on the side of a van."

Buy TRH and thank me later, spread the word, and follow Matt Fries on social media because he is one to watch! And last but not least... part three is coming soon to complete the trilogy! I can't wait!

If Clement Moor and Stephen King collaborated with Carl Hiassen to write a new Christmas classic, you would end up with The Rabbit Hole. Brilliant nonsense, Absurdist Noir with more than a touch of political satire.
The further into the book I get the harder it is to put it down.
Tim Burton should make the move.
Perhaps the author says it best. "It’s a Wonderful Life meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers in the hilarious political satire that puts the ho ho ho back in horror, the con back in conspiracy, and the dumb back in freedom.

This book is truly hilarious, an absurdist comedy and so much more. The reader is swept along on a maniacal race through the never ending noise of existence. Rational thought and moral chaos abound in the search for truth beyond politics and technology. A perfect novel for our time.
