Purchase options and add-ons
As for the writing itself, the poems are simply composed but contain an exceptional amount of detail. Very highly recommended. Reviewed by Jamie Michele for Readers' Favorite
Imagine you are Rosa, a black child growing up in Alabama, barred by law from attending the same school as white children; Helen, a playful toddler who suddenly cannot see and hear; Anne, brought up in an almshouse who becomes Helen’s governess, and the only person able to get through to her; Florence from a wealthy family, seeking a career in nursing against the wishes of her parents. Each story told in rhyming verse, guides you through their early upbringing towards an iconic moment or time in their lives, and beyond, showing how they overcame their situations and the impact their achievements made. As one reader said, "It’s easier to remember when read in verse."

About the author

Julia has always lived in north London, UK and was brought up in Stanmore. Opposite her house were only fields and the local school was a mere 5-minute walk. The spinney nearby provided opportunities for jumping a stream, picking blackberries, and hiding in the woods. Switch to three children later, husband David, and seven grandchildren – 3 girls and 4 boys. She used to write song lyrics and now loves writing children’s stories, especially in rhyming verse. She has published nine books, including one translated into Polish. Remarkable Women in Verse, for slightly older children, tells the story of Rosa Parks, Helen Keller and her governess Anne Sullivan, and Florence Nightingale. As one reader commented, "It's easier to remember when read in verse." Her most recent book is Monster Makes a Friend, another charming picture book.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2021Not only does she do it in rhyme, but she gives these women the tribute they deserve. The design is absolutely delicious, and the vocabulary list at the end is a sweet bonus!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021History is filled with stories of people who have gone against established norms to change the course of the future. Four such women are featured in this brief, poetry-rich narrative that tells of both their lives and the influences they had on the world. Featuring Rosa Parks, Helen Keller, Anne Sullivan, and Florence Nightingale, this book tells of each woman’s upbringing and her important contributions to society. Rosa Parks added fuel to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, using measured actions to inspire equality in the treatment of Black people. Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller made communication possible for people lacking both sight and hearing. And Florence Nightingale’s observations of disease led to marked transformations in the world of nursing. Though each section is relatively short, this book stands out because it uses measured, rhyming stanzas of poetry to recount historic events. Broken into relevant sections, readers are given a foundation of each person’s life and how they became the historic figures they are today. Compelling information becomes even more engaging because of this book’s poetic delivery, allowing readers to more easily commit the included facts to memory. Each section begins with a brightly colored page that shares the dates of the featured person’s life and words that are pertinent to their story. At the end of each section, a glossary is found that defines noteworthy words and phrases within that segment, enhancing readers’ general understanding of the text. Thanks to the brevity of the book and its accessible design, this is an excellent tool for reluctant readers to begin learning about important people in history. Unique in its presentation, this is a helpful contribution to library collections for young adult readers.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2021This is the first book I've come across that teaches history lessons in verse, and I loved it! I have to admit that history has never been my strong suit, but the verse was so engaging and helped me remember the facts much more easily. I can't wait to share this book with my son and my daughter to help them appreciate the amazing lives of Rosa Parks, Helen Keller, Anne Sullivan, and Florence Nightingale! This book would also be great to use in the classroom.
