The Magic of Vanaheim: The Nine Worlds Book 1 Kindle Edition
When he enters the fortress of Saeborg disguised as his sister, supposedly sent to end their enmity through marriage, Håkon is prepared to die if it means taking the enemy ruler with him.
Handsome, cunning, and in possession of seiðr—the powerful battle magic reserved for women in the other realms—Prince Talvinen of Vanaheim is the kind of man feared and despised by the Jötnar. Talvinen has been obsessed with Håkon since he was a child, and he sees through Håkon’s disguise immediately.
Now a prisoner in an enemy realm, Håkon depends on Talvinen to survive and protect his sister. As they face threats both from within the Vanir court and the surrounding realms, Håkon’s loyalties are tested and his darkest desires tempted.
Can he survive, or will the young Vanir Prince be his undoing?

About the author

I'm a psychologist by day and MM romance author by night. I love dreaming up new worlds and wielding the power to give my characters the HEA that rewards their struggles.
There are too many genres I love to read and write, but paranormal and fantasy settings hold a special place in my heart.
In my work, I like to incorporate my fascination with all things Scandinavian, my favourite tropes like enemies to lovers and D/S, and a dash of action and adventure.
I'd love to hear from you via saganansen@gmail.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2024As always, Saga Nansen creates a vivid world—this one inspired by Norse myth—in The Magic of Vanaheim. This book offers a wonderful insight into Norse mythology; if you're a history nerd like me, that means an entry into a fascinating research rabbit hole, but the book is still a delight even if you're only there for the fantasy and/or romance. (There's also a helpful glossary at the back of the book, but the story is easily understandable without looking anything up.)
The characters are rich and believable, many drawn from Norse myth but also individual and personal in a way that makes famous mythical beings much more real and intimate (and in my opinion, more interesting). It's impossible not to root for the main characters. Talvi is a delight—both cheeky and amusing and impressively powerful—and Håkon is an endearing grumpy/gruff yet sympathetic figure (and has an unexpected character arc that's one of the most interesting parts of the story). The main focus is definitely on Håkon and Talvi, who often seem to be in their own little world—the other characters mostly seem to be there to further Håkon and Talvi's story along and don’t have a lot of development themselves. That said, the other characters add extra depth and humor to the story, and it doesn't end up feeling like something is missing.
Based on the first few chapters, the dynamic between the main characters is somewhat unexpected—and potentially unrealistic—but somehow it works, and it keeps the story from being too obvious or cliché. Though the mythology background and an outside antagonist/struggle are present, the focus of the book is definitely that dynamic between Håkon and Talvi. The main story is really the growing relationship between them and Håkon's struggle to accept himself (though playing out in a much less cheesy way than I just put it).
And what about likely the most important aspect for many readers: the romance? To be honest, I was a bit surprised when I first read one of Saga’s books and liked it (at least the romance aspect), because I’m not usually a fan of d/s elements. But the relationships in the books are so well done and the myth and world building so beautiful that I now immediately read her books whenever a new one comes out—and always enjoy it. This book is no exception to that. The interplay between the main characters is both charming and funny at times, a sweet yet spicy romance with d/s undertones. I’d say it’s spicy enough to satisfy those who like kinkier romances but also subtle enough to still be enjoyable for those (like me) who aren't as into the d/s dynamic or hardcore kink. The romance happens a bit quickly considering Håkon is supposed to hate Talvi, but this plays alongside Håkon's own personal journey of shame and self-acceptance (and honestly, satisfies impatient readers like me).
Overall, The Magic of Vanaheim is both a beautiful (and spicy) love story and a rich weaving of Norse myth and original world building. Even expecting and wanting a romance, I found myself just as ensnared and captivated by the world itself (though never fear, there's plenty of romance and spice!). Unsurprising for one of Saga Nansen's books, I find myself returning to reread scenes and getting sucked back into the story. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.

I honestly absolutely adored this. I'm a decent chunk Norwegian and have always loved learning about Norwegian mythology. This really satiated that hunger. I thought the story was well written and can't wait for it to continue! I received the book as an ARC and I'm oh so happy I did. Both Hakon and Talvi are amazing and cute characters and I adore the age difference trope. I can't wait to see how much it can be expanded! Can't wait to read more.
Edit: I wanted to add a bit more information! Also the Bonus Chapter scene was just delightful. This has both story and smut. I appreciate that it took some time to get to the actual sex. The foreplay was amazing. I love Talvi... The idea of the younger top is always fun to me. I appreciate how powerful he is. Like Hakon can clearly take care of himself buuuuutttt... I appreciate that it was also mostly low on angst. But that's a personal thing for me.
Overall though, I really enjoyed it and can't wait to see how it continues going forward! I want to see what happens with Talvi's mom's and whatever else is to come 🖤 I love Hakon. I'm so excited 🖤
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2024Saga Nansen takes Norse mythology and spins a bad-a fantasy. The tale of the Nine Worlds could fit into the Poetic Edda with no problem.
Håkon Bloodaxe is the illegitimate son of Bergelmir of Jotunheim. In order to save his younger half-sibling Anya from a political marriage he takes her place. His father gives him an additional order. Assassinate the King of Vanaheim. Talvinen, youngest child of Queens Vellamo and Ahti, has ruled Vanaheim since the disappearance of his mothers and brother. When he was eight or nine, he approached Håkon after a tourney, gave him his ring and asked him to marry him. As an adult, he sees through Håkon's disguise and marries the man he loves. By Vanaheim law, Håkon is the rightful heir of Jotunheim.
Håkon grew up in the viper's nest of Jotunheim's court. As the 'natural' son of the king, he has no power and any weakness can be held against him. He's a little appalled at how careless his new husband is, allowing an enemy to carry a blade and to be alone with him. Talvi is a vala, a sorcerer. He's confident in his powers, maybe a tad too comfortable. At least in Håkon's opinion.
Talvi's patience never wavers. He's kind to his husband, treats him with gentle respect. Håkon's suspicions slowly get laid to rest.
It's enemies to lovers. With swordplay and magic. An evil sorceress and a few betrayals. The excitement and tension ratch up page after page. The worldbuilding is top notch. Thyra and Godrun are very supportive secondaries.
The book has a very satisfying ending. But left lots of arcs for more books. Is Håkon Bergilmur's son or maybe... Thrym's? And most importantly, will Uncle Njord and his thrall get their own story?
A highly recommended read. It's one where I can't wait to have the entire series/trilogy, so that I can read it completely. But I really don't want the fun to end.
I received an advanced copy of this book and this is my review.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2024It started with the character performing in a ring with his brother and he won the match that had his brother wound up. Then a young boy came up to him from his backside and he had no feeling that the boy was there until the boy spoke.
Well that started a whole story by itself and the characters were different in each chapter of the book. The next time the boy saw him was when he was a man and defending his keep, Hakon knew he was famed for his control but he learned of his abilikty to control other wordly things.
The story went interstingly on and it ended with the two of them, Talvi & Hakon living a beatiful life.
It is a good read and you will love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars God of War meets the Witcher vibes! A beautiful intricate world!
This is my first read by this author and I must say that I really enjoyed it! If you're a gamer, then it kind of had a mix of like god of war vibes and a little bit of the witcher too almost, which are two of my faves so it's no wonder I enjoyed this book!
There is a lot of Norse Mythology Terminology so it can feel confusing but stick with it! I promise it's worth it and after a few chapters you'll have caught on! Just like any good fantasy book it takes a bit to understand the world you're in and what makes that particular world turn 💜
I loved Talvi and Håkon's love story! It was honestly so refreshing to have a fantastical love based on old mythology and also to have a younger top! But Talvi is 💯 what Håkon needed without him even truly realizing he needed it. This book was a perfect blend of romance, mystery and intrigue, betrayal and action! Plus the spice, ohhh allllll the spice 😈🥵. The scenes between Talvi and Håkon are 💥🔥. And thankfully, even with the premise of it being an arranged marriage, with a dash of one being almost a hostage (but not really though 😏) it never strays into dark territory so it's definitely a good read for those who don't like darker romances! That being said there could be some triggering content so mind your triggers.
I cannot WAIT for the next book! It's going to be so good, I know that already without even knowing what it's fully going to be about 🤣. Plus, I REALLLLY want to know what's going on with the Uncle and a certain man 😈😏.
Talvi is honestly just the sweetest thing when it comes to his Håkon, and Håkon himself is a cinnamon roll dressed as a badass warrior ⚔️. You definitely won't be disappointed if you pick up this book 😍🥰.
