Rainbows Orange Book of Poetry (Rainbow series 2) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Lily Lawson’s poems work on a deep level in my heart. She weaves a tiny story out of exact chosen words that strike at my core.
Get a cup of tea or coffee, sit back, and savor her poems. Your day will be better for it.

Orange means passion, and for Lily Lawson, that's writing. In this second relatable, contemporary collection of the Rainbow series, the ‘non poetry-lovers poet’ shares that passion in the way only she can.

'... to the artist, the poet, the dreamer,
the weaver of words,
I give thanks.'

'However the reader interprets the intent in these poems, they are all written with Lily’s usual word craft, and emotion without sentiment.'

'... full of poems that are simple and sincere, heartfelt but without the veil of unnecessary complexity that often obfuscates rather than illuminates, and that puts many readers off.'

' ... this slenderest of volumes will appeal to the writer in all of us.

I just bought and read this book by Lily Lawson. First of all, poetry has evolved, and poems read back in the day are classic, but Lily takes her words to new heights after listening to a Beatles song and meshing her poetry with music. Poetry should have sometimes they rhyme, and Lily proves that to rhyme is not necessarily in great poetry. I was touched by the poems found within. Some hit me like lightning. Time changes us and our friendships to the point that some friendships end. I've been there a few times. I never thought of using colors in my poems and a poem I'm not really. This book hits on the essentials of life. Five shiny golden stars!

Poetry is a special gift from the poet to the reader. RAINBOW’S ORANGE POETRY BOOK is a gift to the world from poet Lily Lawson. I loved the introduction that gives a glimpse into the poet’s past and passion for poetry.

The poems are short and easy to read. Many have a beautiful turn of phrase that catches in the mind. Whether it’s “the weaver of words” or “in dancing fire, in beating drums,” Lily has a gift for words.

I’m hard pressed to pick one or two as my favorites. Many of them made me think of Vincent VanGogh. The poet, like the artist, is often not recognized for the truth created in the sharing of the gift.

Rhythmic poetry, with a few treats for poets and writers in particular and eloquent glimpses into the poet's world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely tribute to poetry - and to people
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 3, 2023
Lily Lawson has recently been entertaining us with her brilliant kids’ poetry books but that doesn’t mean we’ve missed her poetry for grownups. So it’s a delight to see this latest release of a short but powerful collection in Rainbow’s Orange Poetry Book.

This collection is a lovely tribute to poetry in Lily’s life, and I very much enjoyed the way many poems can be construed as being about people/a person or about poetry, giving us insights into the poet’s soul. Even a poem such as I Don’t Understand, which must be about a person, right? Yet … a little falling out with Poetry (capital P intended)? Hmm. However the reader interprets the intent in these poems, they are all written with Lily’s usual word craft, and emotion without sentiment.

    A satisfying read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncomplicated but meaningful

In her introduction to her latest collection of poetry, Lily Lawson says ‘Orange means passion, and my two passions are music and writing, the constants in my life’. She goes on to describe how, as a child who found poetic language inaccessible, a teacher’s decision to use Paul McCartney’s lyrics for the song ‘Yesterday’ proved to be the key that opened up her subsequent love of the genre and her desire to write poems that made use of everyday language. As always, this new volume in the rainbow series is full of poems that are simple and sincere, heartfelt but without the veil of unnecessary complexity that often obfuscates rather than illuminates, and that puts many readers off.
In the very first poem, we find lines that sum up her approach. Poetry, she writes:

    ‘…finds its way
    through tiny nooks,
    to people with no time
    for books’

This has long been Lily’s strength as a poet, in my view: her work has a refreshing directness, a sometimes confessional honesty. In this collection, however, while we still get that openness and conversational style, there is more technical mastery, more confidence in the use of rhythm and rhyme, and more philosophical reflectiveness. Her use of metaphor is more complex and striking, often drawing from the occupation of writing itself: life experiences are visualized as ‘unnecessary signage/proclaiming no returns/doors closing behind me as I go’ . Relationships are embodied in the physicality of the written word:

    ‘There’s no rewrite,
    No second draft.
They remain published in original format.

This volume contains a lot of contemplation on the nature of poetry and of being a writer. ‘My words fall onto the page’, she writes, ‘knowing their place better than I’. This is something many of we writers will recognize, and this slenderest of volumes will appeal to the writer in all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful, heartfelt poetry

Poetry is a very subjective thing. For some, it has to rhyme. For others, it must be airy and intellectual. Personally, I love poetry that is human and heartfelt.

Lily Lawson’s latest poetry collection, Orange, is completely my cup of tea. It speaks of the concerns, dreams, and situations that many of us face in our lives. My favourite poem in Orange has to be ‘I See You In Your Absorption’. It makes me feel understood as a fellow writer.

All in all, this is a brilliant poetry collection – even better than its predecessor, Red – and I look forward to reading the rest of the rainbow.

    More please, Lily.

Such a lovely collection of poems. Quick enough to read without committing too much time, but I was left thinking about them for a long time afterwards.

The Book of Us left an imprint on my heart.

Enjoy these little poetic moments with a cup of hot tea x
