Christmas at Rakehell Manor: A heart-warming, feel good read for the holidays (Regency Rakes and Rebels Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 165 ratings

A house of sin...shrouded in mystery and steeped in ever more scandalous gossip, where debauchery and wild parties are rumoured to take place.

A notorious rake...whose wicked reputation sends neighbours swooning over their tea cups. Can he really be as bad as he seems?

A lonely paid companion...whose prim and practical exterior hides a lush sensuality waiting to be awakened.

Prudence Eylesbarrow is resigned to dreary spinsterhood and to never finding love. All she wants is one Christmas where she’s not at someone’s beck and call.
But when Prue finds herself snow-bound at the infamous Rakehell Manor, her curiosity with Hugo, Marquess of Warwick – mysterious, handsome, world-weary, cynical – tempts her to reveal passions she never knew she possessed. Even so Prue is under no illusions. It was fool’s game to think a penniless nobody could tame the master of Rakehell, for that way lay heartache and social ruin.
Or has the time come for the power of passion, the promise of love and the magic of Christmas to unite two people from very different worlds?

I don't know what it is about the combination of Regency Rakes and Christmas but it's simply divine. Perhaps it's that I love to see historical bad boys reformed during the most magical time of year. Or its perhaps it's that I love reading about all that warm wonderful holiday spirit. Or perhaps it's really for the mistletoe scenes (ok, I admit it! ;)). Luckliy, you get all three in Christmas at Rakehell Manor.

On one hand there is Hugo, the elusive and secretive Lord living in the scandalously dubbed Rakehell Manor. What exactly is going on in there? What of all the whispers and rumors of shocking behavior and... orgies? On the other hand, there is Prue, the sensible and highly capable companion, able to handle any situation thrown at her with aplomb. But will she be able to handle being forced to take refuge at the Manor? What will she think of the goings on in there? Will she uncover the secrets of the mysterious Lord? Would she even dare to?

It's wonderful to see these two characters slowly open up to each other healing their wounded hearts. And the back drop of the impending holidays couldn't have set the scene any better.

I read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down. Hanbury has a particular talent for creating heart melting scenes and this book has several of them. Its worth reading simply for the log house scene.*sigh*

    Highly recommended.

    My absolute favorites by Hanbury-

Christmas stories are a subgenre of the Regency Romance, and Christmas at Rakehell Manor is a lighter confection with a group of decent people coming to terms with some of the challenges life has given them, with much healing and reconciliation occurring in part through the magic of the Holiday Season. The story is not entirely sure-footed when it comes to physical reality, but if you can overlook those kinds of glitches, you will find the book a pleasant, Cinderella-style story with good-hearted people.

I'm always wary when there are few reviews and all of them are 4 and 5 star. I may understand, though, why some of those reviewers gave this tale glowing reviews. It's a happy story, easy to read.

Ms. Hanbury definitely knows the period, the story had a nice flow to it, and I liked the characters. On the other hand, the story is rather shallow, riddled with contrived plot devices, and I had to suspend my disbelief throughout. But hey, it's an early Christmas, a sweet story, and if you can go with the flow, it's an okay tale.

    Enjoy your reading! :)

You know that wonderful surprise you get when a book comes out early? This was a great surprise to me, because having read the majority of Elizabeth Hanbury's works, I felt confident I would enjoy this tale every bit as much as the others.

The story centres around Prue (Prudence Eylesbarrow) and Hugo - the Lord of Warwick, and also the notorious 'Rake of Rakehell Manor'. It's actually Raikhall, but such is the low regard many in the area have for this man, the irony of the nickname of the residence is not wasted on him.

Prue is a decent young woman of 27 years of age, so as she says so accurately 'we're not in the first flush of youth", but she has an uneasy attraction to Hugo. Why? Well, haven't we all fallen for that someone who is say a bit 'bad', and been very attracted to it?

Having said, that, I'd like to think I err on the side of caution and ultimately pick the good girl over the bad one. Prue is good, we learn that early on. But from the reader's point of view I was wondering if I should want Prue to end up with Hugo.

The story twists and turns beautifully, and the thread that is strongest throughout the book - why Hugo is so dark and broody (not an untypical trait of us males) all the time but especially at Christmas is so well done, that when the reveal happens, it's so good that I simply cannot tell you what it is!

There's also some scenes in the book that really surprised me. Let's just say that if you have read one of Miss Hanbury's books, that does not mean you've read them all. Christmas at Rakehell Manor is a wonderfully crafted romance that has her trademark witty humour running throughout the entire book.

Some of the lines I loved (truncated):

Miss Smee-Bevel: "You, sir, are a scoundrel! Who are you? What is your name? I'm sending Parsloe to fetch the footman!"
Hugo: "The Marquess of Warwick, and pray, fetch the footman, he may be needed to restrain your hysterics!"
    --
"Christmas comes once a year but the right person comes once in a lifetime."
    --
"She...wished that they could have kept talking forever without bitter reality intruding."
    --
Other characters, like Miss Bean, give the story an interesting perspective as she seems the one most harshest on Hugo.

Hugo is a multi-layered character whose demons are played out with great subtlety. Prue is an engaging heroine, and not so dainty and delicate as some heroines are portrayed in these kind of stories.

Like most of my reviews, I like to give readers a taste of what to expect rather than giving away full blown spoilers. Let me summarise by saying the Christmas at Rakehell Manor is a superlative work from Miss Hanbury. My only thought is just how she follows this up!

Do not wait for Christmas - buy this wonderful tale so that you can enjoy it now :)

This is the first Elizabeth Hanbury book that I read but isn't the last. She writes with such joy and lightness, a real pleasure
The couples are all you want them to be, the women strong but vulnerable and kind, the men virile and masculine but tender and gentle when need be. Hugo and Prue are such a great couple, their romance will leave you breathless.

Yet another lovely romance from Elizabeth Hanbury, with a slight case of mistaken identity and the Christmas spirit brought out in full. I really enjoyed reading a Christmas story in July; it was a great relief from the heat! A wonderful, light-hearted read!

I have read all Elizabeth Hanbury's books and enjoyed them very much but I think this one might be the best. Hugo and Prue are both such likeable and, more importantly, believable characters that I was instantly involved in their story.
The minor characters are also well written and interesting and I particularly enjoyed Prue's dreadful employer who makes a brief but memorable appearance late in the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well written romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great story - don't wait until Christmas to read it!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 9, 2014
Already a fan of Elizabeth Hanbury's work....I loved this story about Pru and the mysterious "Rake of Rakehell Manor!" Yes it may have been a familiar storyline, but it was Pru and Hugo's story, and every page was eagerly turned to discover their destiny. The descriptions of the manor had you walking through each and every room. Despite the Christmas theme, it was a story easily read, even in the summer. You could still enjoy the smell of mince pies and mulled wine, and imagine the biting cold wind and snow stinging your face. This is certainly one to bring out again on those cold wintery nights. Pru's character was different, she was sensible and well thought out. Like her, you wanted caution to be thrown against the wind, and what a perfect partner for Hugo in their would they/wouldn't they romance. The background to Hugo's life, as it revealed the true man behind the rumours, was perfectly executed. Every character was charming, and some you just loved to hate (Miss She-Devil - brilliant!!). Hermione was endearing, and what a delightful chaperone she turned out to be - a truly "who'd of thought it" moment from Pru's companion. Finaly, to add that the humour delicately thrown in for good measure, worked well. Thank you for a delightful story - created and lovingly shared, my ideal romance.
