As the demon draws them all deeper into its deadly snare, Emily has to choose between her illicit feelings for Tad and protecting her sister. But why is Lillie so special? And is Emily powerful enough to battle the rift demon that's hellbent on possessing and killing everyone marked by its curse? Because as with all heroes, when the time comes, Emily must face the demon alone.

To save them all from elemental carnage, can Emily coax forth her dormant darkness, unlocking a past she doesn't remember and threatening every truth she's ever believed?

From the Author

Hi, I’m River K. Scott and I’m crazy about all things fantasy and sci-fi.

My books blend my obsession over the fantastic with the darker questions about our human existence. What is fate? Is there a God? Is there life after death? Why do people do bad things? Who’s calling the shots in our lives? What does it mean to be good?

Whether it’s a young adult urban fantasy thriller, a middle grade historical fantasy, or a high fantasy epic, my books will bolt along at breakneck speed while tackling these questions. Oh, and with a good helping of romance, too.

Along the way, I’ve studied religion and philosophy, donned the MFA and literary agent hats, worked alongside Child Protective Services, developed eLearning for agencies combating domestic violence, and am now producing audiobooks for indie authors.

When I’m not writing, reading, or binging Netflix, I’m rock climbing in Tucson, Arizona.

I grew up in a small town in Central Florida. Yes, we had a neighborhood alligator. And our backyard, policed by two fluffy dogs, was forever being commandeered by poisonous reptiles.

Get book updates and useful thoughts on living a happier life in your inbox—along with a FREE novella, Episode 0 in Rangers of the Rift, straight to your e-reader. Price of Bone is a dark and thrilling standalone prequel to the series.

This series is 100% worth the read. I don't normally gravitate towards this genre but when the books are good what can you do about it?! Needless to say, I was hooked instantly. The writing is actual perfection. I haven't been skimming at all (and I am a skimmer). The action is engaging, the characters and relationships are intriguing, and the books move quickly. I have found myself trying to pace my reading so I don't run out of episodes!

Some sweet moments here. I enjoyed the insight into Tad and his family life – the good the bad and the heartbreaking. But Emily Mars is a magnet for danger and things get off the rails fast, guess that’s the life of a ranger.

    Minor Spoilers

Emily catches the scent of her mysterious demon as he starts to make his presence felt around Sand Dollar. She doggedly follows, hot on his trail! What’s he up to? There’s little time for answers with lives hanging in the balance …

I don't think any of these books from here on out will ever receive less than 5 stars from me. They just give me everything I want and more. Thank you River K. Scott for writing such a fabulous world that I will never not want to dive into.

I went into this book ready to dive into the 2nd season after such a thrilling ending to the last. And it did not disappoint. We pick up not long after the previous book left off and I was so happy to see that. Sometimes a big time jump can be very jarring.

Also, we got to see lots more character backstory in this one. We got to learn more about Tad and his brother - their past, their current relationship. This was something I had been wondering about for a couple of books and I was finally glad we got to see more of it. We also got to see more of the little boy from the end of the last book. I had secretly hoped that would happen too because he seemed like he could be very important to Emily's story moving forward.

A big selling point of these books for me (aside from the whole guiding the dead to the afterlife premise - which I adore!) is the family aspect. I love that Emily's family is ever present in her life and that you really get to see them. They might not know everything about her, but there's so many stories where there's just no family involved in the young adult protagonist's life. That is not the case here.

I love how you, as the reader, get so absorbed in the details of this world that you never see the twists coming. It is just the absolute best feeling about this book and all the others. The author is just so descriptive that you feel like you've fallen into Emily's world.

And how can I not mention the tension between Emily and Tad? It's ever-building throughout these books and I LIVE for it! I can't wait to see where the next book takes us.

Easily 5 stars from me. And if you enjoy stories like The Archived by V.E. Schwab and Supernatural, these are the books for you. I will never stop recommending them!

So if you think season 1 got you hooked, wait until you read episode 5. My gosh!
This book is fast paced and keeps your mind turning the whole time. New characters, new spells, new demons! Just when you think you know what Emily is in for everything changes.
This book does end with a cliff hanger, but let’s face it, we are already hooked anyways!
The author does an amazing job of bringing you back into Emily’s life. If you thought Emily was strong and powerful in season 1, just wait until you see what she can do now.
I love that we are watching Emily’s character grow, yes she already had her gift when the book started but I love being right here and watching it grow with her.
I can’t wait to see what the rest of season 2 brings for everyone, Emily, Lillie, Tad, and all the other new characters we meet in episode 5.

After the bombastic ending of Season 1 I was expecting a short gestation period with this new season, and there is - for a few dozen pages. Episode 5 picks up merely two weeks where Episode 4 left off and just like that you're right back in the action: A deadly force overwhelming Sand Dollar, an immensely powerful foe, and just as many questions as there are answers as the pages turn. Seeing the Witch Queen Dinan again so soon was a welcome surprise, and her role in the ending of this Episode was a shock to say the least.

River Scott has a knack for neatly braiding the intertwining yarns of this epic story, but just as soon as you follow the trail to the knot at the end you find another path that's sprung up along the way. You're always hungry for more, just as the dark powers in these books are.

No spoilers below but you really need to have read the previous book.

This book picks up very shortly after the last one in the series. Emily deals with both the damage from the last book, her relationship with Tad, and threats to her beloved sister. It's fast paced, kinda like being on a roller coaster. While Emily's character shows growth, she still tends end up in trouble over not playing by the rules. And maybe this time, it will cost her more than she's willing to pay.

A fun read with interesting characters.

It does end on a cliffhanger. I don't like that but YMMV.

Rangers of the Rift is an addictive series. Each episode is breathtaking, and In Wait for Blood does not disappoint---it's stunning. I can't get over how Scott manages to reveal more of the universe and raise the stakes even higher with every episode.
I can't wait for the next episode!!!

Fifth book in an episodic fantasy series that will keep you entertained when you’re wanting a quick read. Makes it easier to put down and pick back up without getting lost while still having a strong storyline.
