Raven's Feast: A Viking Age Novel (Hakon's Saga Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,637 ratings

Hakon Haraldsson returns in this fast-paced historical adventure set in Viking Age Norway.

It is 935 A.D. and Hakon Haraldsson has just wrested the High Seat of the North from his ruthless brother, Erik Bloodaxe. Now, he must fight to keep it.

The land-hungry Danes are pressing from the south to test Hakon before he can solidify his rule. In the east, the Uplanders are making their own plans to seize the throne. It does not help that Hakon is committed to his dream of Christianizing his people - a dream his countrymen do not share and will fight to resist.

As his enemies move in and his realm begins to crumble, Hakon and his band of oath-sworn warriors must make a stand in
Raven’s Feast, the riveting sequel to God’s Hammer.

About the Author

Eric was born in Los Angeles in 1968. He is the author of three historical fiction novels, GOD'S HAMMER and its sequels, RAVEN'S FEAST and WAR KING. All tell the story of the first Christian king of Viking Age Norway, Hakon Haraldsson, and his struggles to gain and hold the High Seat of his realm.

Eric's fascination with Vikings and medieval history began at a young age, though exactly why is not clear. While Los Angeles has its own unique history, there are no ancient monasteries or Viking burial sites or hidden hoards buried in fields. Still, from the earliest age, he was drawn to books about Viking kings and warlords and was fascinated by their stories and the turbulent times in which they lived.

He began writing as a child, though never considered it as a career until he was in graduate school studying business. It was there that Eric began researching and writing GOD'S HAMMER, his first novel.

Eric now resides in Santa Barbara with his wife, his two children, and his dog.

My review of the first book, space space, I was happy with parts of the book and how it was handled, but I was really not happy at all at the whiney, spoiled brat who was somewhat disgusting in his intolerance towards those who didn’t agree with his ideas and values.

This is much as is reflected in a snapshot of today’s world - people are people with their attitudes and reactions. And the truly civilized and humane way most people have been treated over the past 100 years, especially, are going the way of the dodo.

When the young Christian boy, Hakon, became Rex Hakon, or King Hakon, the reaction in his world was triumphant, then he made bad decisions that made many in his society angry. He has matured and evolved into a better version of himself, with true Leadership qualities - forbearance, a budding mature form of forgiveness, and a willingness to roll the dice even as he sets the table to give his ‘team’ an edge in how the dice fall. Would the angry, pernicious, intolerant Nithings of modernity be as knowledgeable as this young Leader became - and the Author has skryed the truth of a real leader in Hakon’s development.

Good book. Fast paced and an interesting story. Well written strategies. The only thing I would have liked to see is a little longer period of history covered in the story line.

The conflict between Hakon and Eric Bloodaxe, his elder brother continues with the future of the Norwegian kingdom hanging in the balance. Hakon’s first challenge is to gain the confidence and alliances needed to win battles while overcoming the distrust of a man whose Christian religion is anathema to the Norse gods. The author is a gifted writer with the ability to put the reader convincingly into the fabric of the narrative. For any reader who enjoys a thoroughly grand historical novel, Raven’s Feast is a must read. I only hope there is a volume three on the way! This book was a very good read. I am always looking for good historical fiction on Viking history. Unfortunately most include the fantasy side such as dragons, dwarfs and other monsters. This book stick to history and the faith of the northerners without adding all the fantasy. This book kept me in gaged and always reading. Only draw back is I wish it was longer, most historical fiction I read is lengthy.

All too often, a sequel is a let-down, but not with Raven's Feast. It's better than the first book in the series, God's Hammer - which was pretty fantastic in its own right. This book builds on a very strong central character in Hakon, who journeys through a lot of ups and downs as he takes his place as king. The plot is tightly written; I never felt bored (despite not typically liking "battle books"). And the character development is excellent. I was sad when this book was over and can't wait to see what happens next...

Very good read moves fast, sometimes too fast, but definitely enjoyable, early Norse history is amazingly violent and these strong characters need to be discovered.

This was a fun book. I had read the first book and this one takes you along that historical account smoothly. I like historical fictions so this was right down my alley. There is so much detail of the daily life of the time in the book and much of it is rather harsh. The characters seem real so they catch your interest. As I read more I definitely wanted to press on so that I could know what the ending was going to be. Quite a tale.

This is book 2 of a 3 book trilogy. I enjoyed all three books equally well. A well written story about the life of Haakon Haakonsson who was king of Norway when he was just 13. He remained king for 46 years. The author has done a commendable job of sourcing facts and adding his own insights to create a great story line. Well worth the read for lovers of Historical Fiction.

Quite often the second book in a series is a disappointment in that it rehashes lots of The first to make it readable. This is far from the case in this instance. The book can easily be read as a stand alone novel, but is only enhanced by reading the first in the series. Equally this book is just as page turning as the first, and I have no reservation in recommending it to anyone enjoying a good read or fans of historical fiction. The author fills in the gaps in the known historical record in an enchanting and interesting way

An excellent book I found it a little hard to get into but after the first few pages it was a very good read. Full of action and a fair bit of politics, it gives a good idea of Viking leadership structure. I would recommending this book to Viking book lovers and any action lovers .

I thought the first in the series was very good and as much as I didn’t mind this, I didn’t think it on par. I will still keep going with the series however as it’s still a solid read.
