Four Stars and a Half Stars... not really, FIVE STARS!!!
Brian, D, and I read this book together, so this is an “us” review. The guys said this was a FIVE STARS for them, but I took off one-half star because I wanted the main character to not have another girlfriend before the heroine. I know, it’s shallow and immature of me, but there you go. It’s who I am. Ha! But it really is a five-star read, so I'll grumpily put it there. Anyhoo…
OMG!! I LOVE love Flynn. Delicious, swoony, and yummy rocker, Flynn. The guys thought he was a good man, just not yummy like me. Heehee. We loved the way he just knew that Valerie was the one for him, almost immediately. There was a bit of a love/hate thing for the whole “having to wait” until she grew up stuff, but the way he never lost his fiery feelings towards her had me sighing dramatically over this guy, and Brian and D nodding in approval. He did do some stupid stuff, true. He could’ve made some better decisions at the beginning of their relationship, but then again, it was all human error type stuff, so it was believable. He was too much of a good guy sometimes, and I wanted to shake him a couple of times… hard! Brian said he needed a good talking to from someone older and wiser, while D just said, “Let the boy figure it out.” And he did… eventually. But then again, Flynn wouldn’t have been Flynn if he wasn’t trying to look out for everyone else all the time, and I LOVE Flynn, so I got past his dumb stuff. ***Possible spoiler here?? Maybe?? *** P.S. If you’re thinking we’re talking stupid stuff like him cheating on our lovely heroine, forget about it! Flynn is… well, he’s Flynn! He’d never hurt our girl like that. Hope that isn’t a spoiler for you, but I, personally, don’t like that stuff in my fantasy world, thank you very much. ***End of possible/maybe spoiler***
And Valerie? Don’t get us started on this girl. She was young, yeah, but she proved to have a maturity that other young women that age lacked. The things she went through… god. With no spoilers here, let me warn you: you WILL need a box of tissues for it. Brian and D may not have cried, but boy, I sure did. It ripped my heart out. Just sayin’. Val got slammed with some of the worst of the worst that can happen to a person, and she came close to collapsing under the weight of it too. We loved her utter humanness, with all the frailty that comes with it. She fell on her face several times, and I found myself getting in the mud pit with her, bawling my eyes out. But to all three of us, the way Valerie fell and then got back up, again and again, cried out her tears and frustrations over something she’d had no control over, all of that was driving home one perfect point:
“True strength does not mean you will never fall, but that you rise again, moving forward, in spite of the pain, and sometimes, because of it.” (Brian’s quote there, but so perfectly defines Valerie.)
At any rate, I was so happy with the way the book ended, as an HFN, a happily for now. It still left me with the whole, “what’s going to happen next to our couple?” without drawing out the pain of having to wait too long for book number 2. We’re still eager to know more about Flynn’s past, and hoping he’ll open up to Val soon. Ahhh! Wonderful book from a great author! So yeah…

I am so relieved this is part 1 and we have more to come, because I just don't want this story to end. Well done KL you have excelled yourself again, you do know you have a lot to live up to in part 2 don't you ;-)
