Rebuilding Hope: An MM Shifter Romance (Kindred Story Book 1) Kindle Edition
When Crowley becomes the Zenith his Kindred was born to love, their enemies will learn that there’s nothing more dangerous than fated mates.
Holden Bancroft was born with a better than average brain and not much else. Often described as strange and sickly, his attempts to conform only made him look foolish and a life-long diet of pills hasn’t provided a cure. Deciding to strengthen the only tool in his arsenal was liberating and learning became his greatest joy. But each episode is another reminder that his time is limited, and Holden intends to use everything he’s learned to help the small town of Hope before he dies.
Alpha Crowley Lomond, Zenith of the Americas, isn’t exactly happy with his ascension. Leading isn’t the problem, it’s acting like he’s somehow better than every other shifter that chafes. But while living and working beside them may seem noble, Crowley is more than just an alpha. As Zenith, he’s their example, their teacher and guide, and the one they will turn to when their way of life is threatened.
Meeting changes them in ways they never could have predicted and unveils a web of deceit that began long before they were born. Together, they will have to unravel the lies and reconcile the consequences if they are to protect the shifter way of life. Along the way, Crowley will become the Zenith his Kindred was born to love and their enemies will learn that there's nothing more dangerous than fated mates.
Rebuilding Hope is the first shifter novel in the exciting new Kindred Story series . If you love fated mates who need each other to save the world, then you need to read this new series by Jessie G.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2020I loved the characters. I loved the writing style. I loved the story. Honestly I loved nearly everything about this book except how hard it was to get to the end. I almost gave up on it a few times (very glad I didnt) and it was an effort to push through though looking back after reading it to the end I can't remember why. I really loved the story and i think it was a great setup for the series just... Some places dragged. Like bad. All in all though I loved it and want more of the story. I really want to know which Zenith gets his Kindred next!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2019This was an interesting take on a shifter romance. I'm accustomed to such things as fated mates and alphas, but both those things were taken a step further in this book.
Crowley is not the alpha, he's the Zenith. That means two things – he rules over not just a group of shifters, but all shifters. Of all breeds. There are three Zeniths in the world, ruling over different areas. Crowley rules over the Americas. Below him there are the regular alphas who run the groups on a day-to-day basis. Alphas are the strongest, as per usual. Zeniths are born to the position, not in terms of bloodlines but in terms of abilities. Secondly, Crowley can hear the thoughts and feel the emotions of all the shifters under his rule, and vice versa. That's what makes him the Zenith. How that works in reality (can you say reality when it's a fiction novel?!) wasn't explained in great detail, but the reader was given sufficient information to get the gist of it and understand how it affects Crowley and how he uses it to affect the shifters under his care.
Then you've got mates. Most shifters in this universe choose a mate, as humans do. They may fall in love, but they're not fated. It turns out that Holden is Crowley's fated mate, which for a Zenith is known as a Kindred. No one has encountered a Kindred in so long that they were believed to be myths.
All of the above gave the novel a sense of uniqueness, and made it interesting and different to those that have come before it, which is good.
I found the story hard to follow at first, and I was super confused as to why Crowley asked Holden to join him at his table in the restaurant, although that was sort of explained later. Their first encounter wasn't shared with the reader. From Crowley offering Holden a seat, we skip forward to them in bed together, and that baffled me. Why didn't we get to see their very first interaction with each other?
Once the story got going through, everything flowed quite smoothly after that. I liked the fact that Crowley wasn't arrogant, that he worried over whether he was doing a good job as Zenith, that he genuinely cared for his people, that he respected advice from those whom he trusted and respected, and yet that he was ruthless and hands-on when it came to necessary punishments. In short, a good leader. Holden's bewilderment and bafflement over the whole shifter thing and also his role as Kindred worked well and felt natural, and yet he instinctively reacted to some things, reinforcing the idea that the relationship was 'meant to be'. I thought that was all handled really well.
Some of the secondary characters were quite interesting. The vampire king definitely caught my attention.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2018Wauw, what an amazing story. This story is taking place in as completely different universe than the other series, but still written like a true Jessie G book. The story is about shifters and vampires, different, prophecies, and quest. It has some really great and complex characters, plenty of action, suspense and love. I can't wait for the next story in this series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2021It was interesting. But I felt like somebody took a bunch of paragraphs and threw them together chronologically, but without any transition, several paragraphs missing and others with cut endings or beginnings. They are in one place, doing something, then next paragraph they are suddenly in totally different location with no reasoning why they decided to come here, and why specifically now, and when it this now.
The writing style is similarly difficult to follow - some scenes are reasonably clear, some have lots of text and little context, and some are convoluted and difficult to understand what's happening.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2018It’s hard to believe this is the first shifter book this author has written. The world created is beautiful and engaging. Holden is trying to live his best life. He has limited knowledge of the shifter world and has been taught to fear what he knows. He also has a very strong sense of social justice. When he sees something suspicious in the reports of aid after a hurricane, he takes it upon himself to find proof. Little does he know that he is headed towards not only the answers he is seeking, but to the man that is his destiny. Crowley has lived his whole life being more. And not wanting to be treated as such. When he meets Holden, he learns just how much more he can be.
This book is addictive. I read it in one sitting. I had to. And now I want to know what happens next! The rating system won’t let me do half stars, so I rounded down. This is almost perfect. So 4 1/2 stars for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2018Holden isn’t a shifter although he wished he was because he’s suffered pain and worse for all of his young life. He’s brilliant and totally dedicated to doing his job to his utmost ability. On his way down to Florida he runs into Crowley at a truck stop and oh my It gets HOT and sweet! Crowley actually is the Zenith over all shifters and vampires in the Americas.
This is a fascinating shifter story and I can’t wait for the next book! Jessie G Is a favorite author of mine and this is a departure for her, into fantasy and the world of shifters, which she does extremely well!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2021I usually don't give reviews which is bad because I am an avid reader and I figured I needed to start. I read reviews to help me determine if I'm going to purchase a book and though there were a couple bad reviews I'm glad I did.
The first chapter was like paragraphs were left out, but it was only that portion and did not take away from the overall plot and characters.
I thought it was well written and though it was wordy in relation to the emotions of the characters it really helped you understand them better.
To me other than that first part of the book it was written seamlessly and well.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2018I was hooked from the beginning! Really good book, sooooooo glad it's going to be a series. I love the characters and can't wait to see how this all evolves. It's a different take on shifters, vampires, etc than I've read before. Its refreshing! I can't wait for the next book to come out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good
There was so much I liked about this book. Crow and Holden are lovely together. I liked the way they came together and how Holdens’s health and identity was affected by their connection. The world was fascinating and shows signs of having great depth. The mysteries added a nice element.
Unfortunately there are some flaws in the construction of the story that stops it from achieving it’s full potential. I think the problem is that there was too much going on at one time. Individual plot points would build momentum but then the ensuing tension would be disrupted by a complete change of scene. By the time the characters returned to the original point, all the tension had dissipated. It was rather frustrating and made it harder to keep track of events and minor characters.
In the great scheme of things, this is not the worst crime ever committed by an author. This is still, after all, an entertaining read. It is however, a great pity because with a bit of style editing, this could be a fantastic series.
