Reclaiming Herself: A Paranormal Women's Fiction Novel Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

After three decades of marriage, Jo catches her husband in bed with a much younger woman. To add insult to injury, her anger makes the magical powers she had repressed at puberty abruptly flare to life. She has to learn to control the magic while holding down a full-time job and going through a divorce.

Jo is lucky in that her best friends are both witches and are able to help her learn about these new-found abilities. While waiting for the divorce to finalize, and under the tutelage of her BFFs, she discovers she’s a good magical potion-maker.

When her boss decides to retire, Jo not only takes her potion business full time but makes a move to a cabin in the mountains. More surprises await her there: she has a familiar – a snarky crow named Esme; and her neighbor, another fifty-something single woman, can speak with animals.

All is not bliss, however. Jo is accused of murdering a woman she has never met, and the investigator assigned to the case refuses to listen to reason. It’s up to her to prove her innocence and bring the investigator to his senses. Can magic help her?

Deborah J. "DJ" Martin is an accountant by training and she still works in that field. Her interest in plants made the study of them, both in medicinal and magical applications, a lifelong hobby. A conversation with a spirit guide one winter's evening in 2003 led her back to school and she earned her Master Herbalist diploma from the Australasian College of Healthcare Sciences in 2008.

Working with many male bosses over the years led her to write a short story, which eventually became "Stressed," Book One of the Ogre's Assistant series.

She left the frozen tundra (Minnesota) many moons ago and now lives in the north Georgia mountains with her husband, their crazy cats and numerous woodland creatures. If she's not clickety-punching numbers for clients or writing, you can probably find her in the garden, visiting her grandchildren, or in her recliner with her nose stuck in a book.

Jo's adventure to recreate her life and the challenges that she faced in relocating to a new area put a lot of pressure on her. She seemed to be excited and handling the situation very well until her dormant powers begin to manifest just as she is accused of a crime she didn't commit. Her friends come to the rescue to help support, protect, and sort out her very complicated life. Jo must tap into her determination, strength, and skills to overcome the chaos her life has suddenly become. I loved how easy it was to immerse myself into Jo's world and would have enjoyed having her as a good friend.

Cheating spouse, murder mystery, discovered magic, midlife woman's paranormal mystery. Herbal knowledge.

This was a good book. The writing style in the beginning was a little difficult for me, I can't really put my finger on why. Then 1/8 of the way through it changed drastically, the writing style became smooth and I couldn't put it down.

D.J. Martin has a great imagination and a great knowledge of herbal remedies. That's what was really cool about the story. She mixed real life knowledge and magic with, well magic.

I loved the animals and colorful characters. What a fantastic bunch of friends and a beautiful setting. Also what a dirty bunch of jackaninnies the bad guys were! The ultimate ex from hell.

This is a great story of a woman overcoming a bunch of bad situations with a little help from friends and the magical world.

I received this ARC from BookSirens, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was a long, but good mystery which held a lot of intrigue about Jo, a women in her 40s who finds she has magic in her while she's besides herself with anger over her husband's cheating on her and she caught him in their home and in her bed.

She felt a numbness and tingling in her fingers and she starts shooting off what looks and sounds like fireworks or electricity. Her closest friend is a witch and helps her through her late blooming years in dealing with witchcraft. She even has had a Familiar who is a crow, Esme, who helps Jo discover he talents and how to grow her magic.

She goes through a lot and makes a major life change in her profession at the same time she's going through with a divorce. He boss, Burke, is retiring. He appreciates her 25+ years of service to him and the law firm he belongs to. Even though he is retiring he takes on Jo and her divorce case along with some other problem that are thrown at her even though she had nothing to do with the deaths of a mother and her daughter. Burke gets the firms top court attorney, Conner, to help Jo and they both learn about magic from her.

Jo moves to the perfect cottage of her dreams that always had a crow in the picture, Esme, because the crow is her Familiar and she does purchase this quaint and adorable cottage. He closest neighbor, who turns into a dear friend is El and they walk through the forest to get to each others homes. Theres a lot of drama that lands in Jo's life because of her ex, Rob, and other mean characters, namely a crabby, nasty witch Johnstone. She works her way slowly through the mess of the divorce and the 2 months after her final divorce where she is falsely accused of murder.

She got by with good friends, who were witches and helped her through the divorce and whatever bad Rob, her ex threw at her. Her loyal and trustworthy witch friends Denny, Abi, Timmy and Chaz helped her immensely and taught her how to do different spells and by the end of the story she was learning how to do these potions and magic on her own. Her friendship continued to grow with El and her family, especially Sam, El's daughter and El's boyfriend, Dave and Coop her talking and magic dog. She realizes how fortunate she is to have these fantastic friends in her life.

This was a paranormal women’s fiction novel stuffed with delights – self-discovery, exploration of magic, a great friendship group, a cheating husband / divorce.

I really liked our protagonist Jo – one of the reasons I enjoy these kind of books is the relatability of these more mature MCs, and Jo was no exception. I was also fascinated by the herbal lore – and I loved Esme the crow! I will definitely be looking out for the next in the series.

I've really been enjoying books like Reclaiming Herself lately - full of magic and real-life situations, as well as full of great characters that aren't classic ingenues. I hope this author writes more like this one soon!
