Rescued by Halfling House: An Urban Fantasy Novel (The Briarmoor Chronicles, Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 104 ratings

Halfling House is thrumming with love, laughter, and more magick than a witch’s cauldron at midnight.

Reinvigorated from her near-death experience and Zeus’ unexpected declaration, Ellie is adjusting to life with magick at her fingertips again. But with three halfling’s to corral and a perilous Australian bushfire at the back door, she doesn’t have much time to dwell on it.

When a young wolf shifter goes missing during a tragic accident, it’s up to Ellie and Clara to help the Faoladh find her. But finding the wolf among the bushfires is only the beginning, as a centuries old prophecy comes to bear on the Faoladh with heartbreaking consequences—unless Ellie can find a way to help them all.

Follow Ellie, Clara, and the halflings as they navigate the hassles of everyday life, their extraordinary battles with the magickal, and the mysteries of Briarmoor, the town they call home.

This series is perfect for anyone who loves heartfelt and hilarious stories about found family, protective mama bears, diverse magic and creatures, slow-burn fade-to-black romance, and LGBTQIA+ representation.

Victoria Vassallo can be described in many ways. However, the most accurate would be a tea-loving storyteller obsessed with creating worlds inspired by ancient myths and legends. She is also an Australian solo mother-of-two who spends her days keeping the real world at bay with the endless mystical and magical possibilities that her imagination and an empty page possess.

I love how she mixes the myths an folklore of different areas and people like Greek, Celtic, Aborigines, Welsh and so many more, while also placing down roots in Australia so even the setting isn't what you think of when you think runaway Greek goddess. Australia itself is such a large part of the plot and story that she is a character in her own right.
Speaking of characters this series is full of such realistic, fleshed out and unique people that they grow on you swiftly. Making it easy to get to know and memorize the whole community.
The plots are varied and weaved through out each book so that some are wrapped up in the book they are introduced an others are sprinkled across the series allowing you to gather their pieces and enjoying trying to work out the puzzle for yourself.
This book is adventurous, thrilling, heartwarming and sometimes overwhelming with emotions....a truly accurate representation of raising toddlers, even more so considering their powers 😜

Book 2 is twisty. You think you know what will happen but you will be wrong. Vassallo does a wonderful job with world building. My favorite part is how she keeps pantheons very separate. And true to their natures—which can be a shock.

But Ellie and the gang are off and running when a young girl goes missing. There is believable teen angst along with a slow-burn romance continuing from book one. A new romance may be starting up if hair color has anything to do with it.

All in all the only thing I can say about this is that it happened almost too fast.

And waiting for book three is going to be hard! I e already marked the June date on my calendar.

This was better than book 1, loved it! Our crew plus a new one or two, were added to this story. Well written, story flows well. We get a little more interaction with the dieties, plus we hadn't seen yet. Grab a copy, was hard too put down!

Just joking. But, really this series is a great place to escape too. Love to read about a loving family , not pushing the victims to heal faster than people around them deem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really lovely story
Reviewed in Australia on January 27, 2025
This is a really lovely story - in fact, I love the whole series! It ticks so many boxes for me and as the author recently shared, it's coming out in audio format soon, which has me absolutely squealing with joy.

Rescued By Halfling House sees Ellie, Clara and the kids back in their own - repaired - home and facing several challenges unique to this world.

The found family trope is my absolute favourite and Ms Vassallo writes that superbly. A Greek goddess who is disillusioned with her Pantheon fosters magical halfling children and gives them the home and love they would usually be denied. It is a beautiful idea and just oozes comfort in that feel good way that warms a soul. There's also humour aplenty because, well - kids!

There is some nice character growth included in this one, which I appreciated. It's always a positive experience seeing someone realise their mistakes or open their eyes to a flaw, and be able to use that as a foundation for some attitude adjustment.

I am thrilled that it's set in Australia! The author's love for her country and the bush comes through clearly in her sensitive writing where she doesn't gloss over dangers but still highlights the mateship that is a big part of our community spirit. One character talks about the healing quality of being out in the bush and to me, that just rang of a genuine and deep appreciation.

The magic in these stories is uncommon but well crafted into a believable and enthralling system. There's the Greek influence as well as an Irish one. Gods from both Pantheons visit in this book to add impetus to the narrative and some familial reconnections.

It's an absolute delight to see the focus of the MC's relationship be each other and not the immortal/mortal conundrum that is often used to add drama to similar pairings in other books. Ellie and Mason's bond is based on respect, bouyed by humour and nourished by genuine care and is relationship goals. And here again Ms Vassallo's sensitivity is showcased in how she writes of the dynamics and give and take in their connection.

The ending was absolutely frenetic!!! It was so hard to stay on the page because Ms Vassallo had added a high tension situation into a fast paced conclusion. I'd still call this a cosy story but be prepared to ignore a phone call or knock on the door because you won't want to put the book down.

I really don't think the author can do any wrong with this series and I'm looking forward to reading many more instalments.

A sweet read, lovely characters . I could relate to the lead character El’s exasperation with Shade the teenage boy. I liked that it was set in Australia and brought awareness to the dangers faced as a result by the wildlife and firefighters.

Glad for another helping of chaos at the halflings house. This time the story was a little darker, and the ending was a did not see that coming moment. A great addition and a great read. Highly recommended.
