The Return of Abaddon: An Epic Fantasy Adventure Series (The Scars of Hiraeth Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

As Wilder stood at what he thought was the end, little did he know, his journey was only beginning.

Sprawled out on the ground in disbelief and staring at the burning wreckage of the helicopter, Wilder sees his mother’s lifeless eyes staring back at him. As he lies there grief-stricken, something strange happens. Wilder suddenly finds himself somewhere else, lying in a dirt circle surrounded by large stone pillars.

The Abaddon, an ancient being who came to conquer this world 2,000 years earlier, was defeated and driven back to his home by the mighty Phoenix.

But he’s back once again, and Wilder is Hiraeth’s only hope.

A pair with unique magic will befriend him. A royal guard captain will protect him. Assassins will try to kill him. Wilder departs on a desperate quest to search for allies before Abaddon realizes he’s still alive--and sets out to destroy him and his new world.

THE RETURN OF ABADDON won FIRST PLACE in three different categories (Fantasy, Magical Realism, and Metaphysical Fantasy) in the Speak Up Talk Radio 2022 FIREBIRD BOOK AWARDS!

Peter Mooren is the award-winning author of the series The Scars of Hiraeth.

Pete’s passion and wit are nearly always on display. Another way to put that is he can be a bit intense and fiery, but it’s offset by a smashingly remarkable sense of humor (some might make the dastardly claim that dad jokes aren’t funny, but those people would be wrong). Whether resulting from his hearty laugh that “the entire neighborhood can hear” or an allegedly frequent colorful expression, Pete’s wife has been known to turn red from embarrassment on occasion.

Born and raised just outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Pete speaks Packers and Upper-Midwesterner fluently. Thanks in part to his decade spent in the Army after high school, he’s lived in many places around the country and world since then. His favorite, by far, was in Costa Rica during his post-Army days. In a tiny Pacific coastal town with no vehicle, Pete and his family embraced the Pura Vida life. The beach, the ocean, the sunsets, and the Ticos were unforgettable, and it was the perfect place for him to begin pursuing his dream of writing.

Pete currently resides in northeast Florida with his wife, two sons, daughter, two doodles, and two cats that resembles a glorified petting zoo where some are prone to howling and biting (thankfully, the kids always apologize afterward).

I started the series … and am happy I did!

I started the series … and am happy I did!
This is not my typical style of book, I generally find myself reading biographies or documentaries on past events. However, with knee surgery and a long road to recovery, I needed something new, fresh, and exciting. This book was recommended by a friend and so I decided during my rehabilitation I would give it a shot. I am happy I did! The story is creative and left me intrigued to learn more about everyone, and everything. I had the book read from cover to cover within a few days (which given recovery and amount of sleeping I was doing, is quite impressive). Once I finished this book I knew I had to start the second of the series (A Surprising Ally) right after… which I did. This is a great series so far and I recommend for anyone- even if it is not your typical type of book. Get started, you won’t be disappointed! (I have a copy with the early cover, before the facelift. Same great story between the covers.)

This book is seriously SO GOOD. I haven't been able to really immerse myself in a book lately or have the energy to read, but that was not the case at all with this book. It's so well written and such an exciting read that I felt pulled out of my current reading slump. To say this story was a page-turner is inadequate. The story hooks you in from the beginning and doesn't let go. I have to say I haven't read a genuinely unique book in such a long time. The beginning was a bit slow, but I liked that about it. It gave so much detail, but never too much that it got boring and dragged on.

The world of Hiraeth is so enthralling and beautifully written. The mystery and adventure in this story were such a breath of fresh air, I genuinely fell in love from the very beginning. Unexpected Magic was an unexpected gem! This book was borderline perfect. The writing style is phenomenal.

The pacing of the story is excellent; there wasn't a dull moment. I kept trying to guess where things were heading but quickly realized this was not a story that I should try to guess the ending. I just wanted to read and find out what would happen next! I finished this in one sitting and I'm already anticipating the sequel.

I'm not here to give away any of the details, but I highly recommend this book about an intriguing world written by a talented author. You will enjoy your time with these amazing characters and their adventures. This book is perfect for any reader who enjoys fantasy! I cannot recommend this book enough.

Creatively written book as the plot pulls you into the character's story. It captures the readers from the beginning with a storyline that gets better and better as you turn each page. It was interesting and captivating from the start. This book is one that you wish you had the entire day to read. The character's development was well thought out and consistent throughout the book. Some surprising twists and turns keep the reader engaged. The author's talent painted vivid descriptions sweeping me into this epic world. Each time I set the book aside, it called me back in a haunting way to continue reading. I enjoyed reading this book so much.

Every once in a while, I get so engrossed in a story that I binge-read until the end, and this was one of those stories for me!
I am sure, I would love everything and anything that this author writes. You know when you come across a book and you don’t know what to say about it other than that you loved it and it was amazing?
Well, that's how I feel about this book.
    JUST READ IT! TRUST ME!

The Return of Abbadon is a kind of isakai-like adventure where a young teen named Wilder is drawn from our world into the world of Hiraeth after his mother is killed in a helicopter crash that Wilder survives. From the time he arrives, Wilder is carried along on a whirlwind adventure as "the chosen one prophesied" to defeat the evil terror, Abbadon. Through his adventures he finds good friends, unlikely allies, long-lost family, powerful enemies, and almost love.

    What I Didn't Like:

This story is written in a style, voice, and tone that is comparable to mid-grade fiction. The humor is something that is light-hearted, family oriented humor that I would have laughed heartily at as a tween or early teen. As an adult, I smiled at the appropriate places. And that's just it. From an emotional standpoint, the hills and valleys of emotion were a bit flat. I would not see this as a negative except for one thing: this story was not written as mid-grade fiction. There is profanity, which in my estimation is utterly unnecessary at all, but certainly inappropriate for young readers. It's not edgy, or cool. It just brings the quality of the work down.

The other thing that I struggled with is the pacing and the interest. I read pretty fast. There are books that I can read in one sitting because of the way they draw in the reader. On this one, it took me several months of reading. I felt as though I was wading through a morass of plot points connected out of necessity but without drive. It was like, "okay we did step 1, now lets do step 2, now step 3, and oh, of course we need to do step 4 next..." The story tried very much to do some cool things and did get some things right (see below), but for me, it was not quite there for a young adult fiction.

    [Spoiler Warning]

We are told about these awesome creatures called the Phoenexis who handily defeated and banished Abbadon the last time thousands of years ago. Yet there is little showing of what they really are and can do. We are simply told they are awesome, then Abbadon shows back up, provokes them to attack, and easily defeats them through handwaving of a plot point. There is no buildup and no reason to care about these birds except that we are told we are supposed to care.

    What I Did Like
There are a couple of things that stuck out for me in this book that made it worthy enough to pick up the second book. First, the magic that the characters use is fairly unique and interesting. It is one of the central plot points of the story. Magic doesn't seem to be categorized into classes much and everyone has individual, unique powers like you read about in Piers Anthony's Xanth novels. Seeing what all Mooren comes up with for his magic users to do is pretty cool.

The other thing that I thought Mooren did really well is subvert expectations of some of the cliches in the story. There are a number of times where an expectation is built up over a few chapters only to be subverted. This part does keep you guessing as to what exactly is going to happen

    Recommendation
I would recommend that parents read this to their tweens (and edit out the profanity). They will enjoy is and you will enjoy the time spent with your kids as I do. Teens will enjoy the story as well, especially the relationship aspects and the magic.
