Falling in love is the sweetest revenge
What do you do when your best friend runs off with your fiancée on your wedding day?
If you’re me, Lyon Elliot, you don’t get mad.
You get even.
Which means seducing my ex–best friend’s younger brother, Miles Halloran.
The quiet one.
The man I’ve known all my life but never paid attention to.
The one I was told to stay away from because he’s way too nice for someone like me. Maybe they’re right.
But see, this is where it gets a little more complicated.
Because the more time I spend with Miles, the more I like him.
Want him.
Now I need him and his sweet smiles in my life.
If this is still a game I’m playing...who’s fooling whom?
From Lambda Literary Award-winning author Felice Stevens comes a story of a player who never gets played, until the quiet bookstore owner gives him a prize worth winning—Love.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2023The beginning of this book made me crazy. I've never had such ill feelings toward an MC as I did for Lyon. I felt bad for him at first because no one should be put in that position but I was also questioning why in the world he'd want to marry a woman as cold as Lindsay. And that was before I even knew how horrible she really was. My sympathy for him was short-lived though. As soon as he began plotting his revenge against Dan, things went downhill for me. He was so cold and calculating, almost cruel, and I really started to wonder if he'd be able to make me like him.
Miles, on the other hand, was fantastic. He started out as the sweetest little cinnamon roll. The shy ones always get me. That's partly why I was so angry with Lyon. Miles didn't deserve to be used like that and based on what we knew at that point, I was afraid that Lyon's plot would shatter him. But I should know better by now. This is a Felice Stevens book after all. Miles has a spicy side and he was not going to let Lyon walk all over him. I just love it when the quiet ones show off that inner strength!
Once the story shifted focus towards Miles and Lyon and their fake relationship, I was a goner. I loved watching the back and forth between them. Miles wasn't giving him an inch and I loved every minute of it. It took a while but my heart eventually softened towards Lyon. And in the end, he ended up melting my heart.
There's a rich cast of supporting characters. Some you'll absolutely love and some you'll loathe with every fiber of your being. Or maybe that's just me. Nope. These people are truly awful.
Don't miss out on the bonus scene linked at the end of the book. It's so worth it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2024Lyon and Miles end up making a really great couple. I wasn’t sure at first, but they really are a great fit by the end. Lyon’s desire for revenge on his former bff (Miles’ brother Dan) makes him try to manipulate Miles in kind of cringey ways. I was so glad Miles didn’t really fall for it. But Dan’s behavior to both men is so bad that Miles ends up agreeing to a fake relationship with Lyon. I love how even though Miles appears to be shy and retiring, he’s really not. He can be forceful and even a little bossy. And I love that Lyon appreciates that about him. I also like how Miles starts to be able to see through Lyon’s tough guy persona and encourages him to be honest about it and why he does it. And I like how because he can see how much Miles loves his brother, Lyon supports Miles continuing to have a relationship with his brother despite what Dan has done to hurt them both.
I thought the mini subplot involving Lyon’s uncle was really sweet. Uncle Harry was a delightful character. Lyon’s brother Scott was a good ally character, and Dan and Lindsey were well done in their selfishness and lack of empathy.
And yet, there was a tension in the story, in how Miles and Lyon related to each other, that felt like they were never going to really mesh well. I’m not sure how else to describe it. I almost feel like the story wasn’t long enough. That tension gets resolved, but a little too quickly. They go from not quite trusting each other to undying love with not enough transition for me.
Still, I did enjoy the story. It kept me interested and engaged and wanting to see them together.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2024I have just read this book for the third time in fifteen months, and each time I read it, I find something new to consider (the other favorite is "On the 2", but for a different reason).
The healing power of sincere and unconditional love is well-wrought here, in a fashion that somewhat mirrors my own life, although my trust issues come from a completely different (and darker) source, and have never been completely resolved over the past five decades...
That said, immersing oneself in very well crafted fiction has the power to keep hope alive IRL, and that is the overarching gift that Felice brings with her work.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2025I bought this book because of the revenge plot and fake dating trope, which appeal to me in romance novels. Unfortunately, "Revenge is Sweet" fails to deliver on this. The story follows Lyon Elliot, who seeks revenge after his fiancée runs off with his best friend Dan. He comes up with the scheme of hurting Dan by pursuing Dan's younger brother Miles who Dan overly protects. What starts as a revenge scheme evolves into genuine feelings, but the execution lacks depth.
While the premise is interesting, the characters feel underdeveloped. Lyon's transition from calculating revenge-seeker to loving partner happens without sufficient emotional groundwork. Miles is presented as the shy "cinnamon roll" with hidden strength, but is presented as so weak e.g. crying over a text message from his brother, moping because his brother won’t talk to him when he chooses Lyon etc. Both Lyon’s and Miles internal conflicts are just too shallow to be convincing and their connection feels superficial, making it hard to invest in their relationship.
The fake-dating romance is superficially explored. When Miles mentioned their "fake dating" near the end, I was left wondering when this had happened, as the story arc around this was virtually nonexistent. Yes, they discussed fake dating and how they would both use it to revenge against Dan but the fake dating itself was never actually built in the narrative.
The author seems afraid to fully explore conflict and its fallout, merely touching the surface of these themes. E.g. we are meant to hate Lindsey as this mean calculating woman and then suddenly both protagonists are so concerned about her after a medical scare. Some supporting characters like Uncle Harry provide bright spots, but they are not enough to save the overall narrative.
This story has great potential if written with richer character development and more satisfying internal conflicts. As written, it left me wanting more substance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely - a great read
Stevens takes what could have been a sappy poorly written revenge story and fills it with incredible depth. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read
I wasn’t expecting to be this affected by a beautifully written story. Found myself shedding some tears because I felt for Lyon and Miles. You must read this story

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved it
I loved the romance in this story, but I must say: Dan wasn't even my friend and I felt the betrayal. To think that Lindsey knew Lyon better than Dan is just bonkers to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner From Felice
It was Lyon’s wedding day but there was no sign of his best man Dan and then a phone call breaks his heart. Dan is not coming and neither is Lyon’s fiancé Lindsey. Lyon is not heartbroken at not marrying Lindsey but he is devastated by Dan’s betrayal. They have been best friends since childhood and Lyon thought of him as a brother.
Lyon has a reputation as someone you do not cross. He comes across as cold and unapproachable but when you learn his backstory you will understand why he doesn’t show emotion. On the day Dan destroys their friendship Lyon doesn’t get mad but he is already plotting how he will get even and it involves Dan’s younger brother, the quiet one, the one he calls “the mouse”, the one Lyon has never taken any notice of since Miles was 15 and Dan threatened to cut his bits off if he so much as looked at him! By the time Dan comes home from his honeymoon Lyon will have Miles so in love with him it will blow Dan’s mind!
Best laid plans. The more time Lyon spent with Miles, the more he gets to know him, the more he wants to be with him. Lyon is no longer sure if he is playing a game with Miles or who has the upper hand.
Although Lyon is not a warm person I could feel his pain at such an important person in his life betraying him and as the story unravels we find he has a softer side. Miles is a sweet, kind man who has hidden his craving for Lyon for years and knew that Lyon thought of him as “the mouse” but as Lyon was to find out, you should not underestimate Miles.
They made a lovely couple and as usual Felice gave us characters to love and hate! I absolutely loved Great Uncle Harry and he loved Lyon fiercely and understood him better than anyone and then there was Dan and Lindsey 😝😤What happened to karma Felice. They got off far too lightly!!
Highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars a nice romance but…
I generally really enjoy Felice Stevens books and am always excited when there’s a new one. In terms of the romance, this book was a lovely story, but the secondary characters, Miles brother and Lyon’s ex fiancée, are so incredibly unlikeable and irredeemable that it completely overshadowed the romance between Miles and Lyon, as they are also incredibly prevalent. I didn’t find the way it was resolved with these characters to be satisfying either, even by the end I still thoroughly disliked them and wanted much more accountability on their part. Especially if, as the reader, I’m supposed to root for them to be in Miles life. Miles and Lyon are very sweet, but this was not my favourite by this author
