The Magic of Deben Market, The Rise of Rose: Returning to the past to solve a mystery in the future... Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

When Major Charlotte Hood lands on Deben Market Beach in the dark, she gets to her feet and makes her way across the bay with no idea what the time is - either in terms of the hour, the day, or the year. Still, she needs to press on and locate her mission partner George and get a grip on the situation.

As she crosses the sand to their intended rendezvous under the moonlight, she spots a dark shadow under a boat. It looks suspiciously like a body. She approaches and presses a finger to the flesh, looking for signs of life. There are none. And no ID either, she discovers.

She wonders if it is her target...

Another murder, another mystery... we must be back in The Magic of Deben Market

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

David Bowmore was born on a winter’s night with the sound of thunder and the flash of lightning welcoming him into a brightly painted Gypsy caravan. Forty-five years later he started writing fiction. After a steep learning curve, his short stories and flash fiction began to appear in various collections.

A classically trained chef, a personable teacher and unqualified landscape gardener, David has lived here, there and everywhere, but currently dwells in Yorkshire with his wonderful wife and a small white poodle.

David tends to write thrillers and mysteries as well as stories with a touch of the supernatural about them. He focuses on character and the oddities of being human, sometimes with humour, but more often with dark unreality.

When he was younger, he had a love of science fiction and fantasy. In adult life his reading tastes veered towards thrilling mysteries, particularly Golden Age crime. You know the sort of thing – country house murders where everyone is a suspect, impossible locked room mysteries with more red herrings than your local fishing hole.

David is an admirer of many authors including Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Eric Ambler, Patricia Highsmith, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Elmore Leonard, Stephen King, and P.G. Wodehouse.

Since his first published story, 'Sins of The Father' appeared in Vortex, published by Clarendon House in 2018, David has featured in more than seventy-five short story anthologies, journals and magazines.

In 2020, The Magic of Deben Market was enacted by BookStreamz with actors from across the globe comparing his work to 'Tales of The Unexpected' and 'Inside No. 9'

This was one of the best books I've read this year. The Magic of Deben Market is a collection of short stories, and while each one can stand on its own, the collection as a whole is so much more. From beginning to end, it becomes a novel of interwoven stories, each connected by the enchanting setting of the town of Deben Market and its inhabitants. A character mentioned in passing in one story may later be the main character of his or her own story, and from there, play an even bigger part in the grander scheme of the entire book. Each story propelled me on to the next. I don't often go back and reread books, but this is one I can see myself revisiting to find even more nuances and connections as I watch the story unfold again. The twists and surprises along the way didn't disappoint. This was a satisfying read that I would highly recommend!

In the small town of Deben Market on the coast of the North Sea, David Bowmore takes you on a tour of the town residents. He gracefully weaves stories of ordinary people who sometimes do extraordinary things, of ghosts and bank robbers, murders and gentle goodbyes. Each character is crafted in a unique voice, one that shows the flaws, the hopes, and the tribulations of living, all drawn to this village by the sea, where old fishing boats transport people from the reality of the streets of Deben Market through the veil of the supernatural. David Bowmore is an extraordinary artist, painting pictures with his words that draws me back again and again to Deben Market, well after the final chapter.

If the saying 'write what you know' is anything to go by, Dave needs an intervention set up as soon as possible as most of his characters seem to be drunken bar flies ready for a good old rumble.
I had a good few chuckles at Moony's antics while reading these tales, he seemed quite the lad and well worth investing the time to read about this character and his journey.

Mr Bowmore, thanks for the very well thought out day trip down to Deben Market- looking forward to the next outing.
next round is on you !

Hands down, this book is one of my favorite magical realism works. The storytelling is so seamless, and I loved how the chapters wove into each other. All the characters were a delight, and the way the supernatural flowed in and out of reality was fresh. The narration was wonderful. Bowmore has a real talent for pacing and description.

In truth, this is ghost story of vengeance like no other, but it is also about the many unique characters in Deben Market. Readers will love immersing themselves in this debut collection.

This beautiful book took me on a journey to a place where Magic and miracles still abound. From the story of Moony and his mentor, Big Nick, to the secret of Gavin Maddock, you'll step into a word of sorrow, surprise, laughter, and love. You don't want to miss this one. I now know why it hit #1 in France. A must-read book!

I was drawn to this book by its title and the mystical cover of the book. I wanted to “feel” what the man on the cover was feeling. I wanted to sit on the dock and talk with the man, to know the stories of life in Deben Market. I wanted to know the people, the scenery, the secrets, legends and if there were skeletons in any closets.
Moony Moore welcomed me into the little seaside town where I met many interesting characters and their tales.
The book left me with a serene feeling, the kind one experiences after a short getaway in a beautiful place.
Bravo to David Bowmore on writing this book! I will be watching for any new releases from David.

Charming book of separate stories which all come together to tell a wonderfully magical tale. If Deben Marker were a real place, I’d add it to my bucket list of places to visit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!

Everyone stop what you are doing and buy this book right now! It's not often that I say this, but I was up till 3 in the morning reading because I couldn't put it down. I am drawn to fully fleshed characters. David delivers this with a backhoe. Mooney Moore will now be one of my lifetime favorite people. Yes, the individuals inhabiting these pages become that real. You experience a sense of dislocation when you finish the book to find yourself in your own home and not in Deben Market. The story unfolds with vivid description, painted by a master storyteller. Not a word is out of place, everything has been carefully crafted, you can see the work that went into this book. The end result is something that sucks you in and stays with you long after you put it down.
As writers, we study other people’s work, how they write, the words they use and the way they string them together to accomplish the things they want to do. This is a writer worthy of watching. His lyrical style is unique, effortlessly evoking emotional responses from the reader. This is what we aim for. When something so beautiful comes together you want the experience to last forever. It does when it lives in your memory like this.
I can honestly say David Bowmore has become one of my favorite authors. I'm so glad to have found him. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

I've work in the morning, so why did I keep reading until this hour? I don't like to use the cliche, but this is a page turner. I'd also like to add that I'm not a huge fan of "time travel" and the like, but again, the author hooked me from the outset. Well done, David Bowmore.
Why did I choose this book? Well, there's no mystery there. My Dad asked for it as part of his Santa present and after he devoured it, I picked it up.
    I'm glad I did.
Give it a whirl. You won't be disappoined.

Really good! The further through this collection of intriguing tales I got, the further I wanted to go! The more the stories start to interweave, the more exciting this book becomes.
An interesting volume of stories with one of the most satisfying endings of a short story collection I've read.
I've read a few of David Bowmore's stories in the past, but he has really outdone himself with The Magic of Deben Market.

This is a collection of tales about inhabitants of the fictional coastal town of Deben Market. Some of them turn out to be ghosts! Further into the book, characters and their stories start to overlap and intermingle. The story of the main character Mooney unfolds throughout the book. Old Nick and the time traveller were my other favourite characters. An unusual and enjoyable debut collection.

There is indeed magic in Deben market, the book is superb, brilliantly told tale after brilliantly told tale weave a web of intrigue. Stand alone stories mix with others that join together to paint a picture of strange happenings in the small sea side town. The characters are very relatable and well defined, anyone who's lived anywhere will find someone familiar within the pages.
