Rise of the Ruthless (Lucifer's Landing Book 2) Kindle Edition
Mykel Finlay doesn’t like bad guys. As ex-police and military, he prides himself on walking the line of good, not evil. When his brother gets in a bind with Ren Ikeda, the Japanese mob boss, he must put aside his moral compass and dive into the murky waters of the mafia. The only thing Mykel isn’t prepared for is falling in love and willingly drowning for Ren, a man he should hate.
With the help of some very unlikely allies, Ren and Mykel try staying alive long enough to take down their enemies and grab a happily ever after neither man thought they wanted. Will their salvation end up leading them down a path of destruction, or will they actually prevail?
This is book two in my Lucifer’s Landing series and is not a standalone. It is highly recommended you read book one: War of the Wicked first.

About the author

Davidson King, always had a hope that someday her daydreams would become real-life stories. As a child, you would often find her in her own world, thinking up the most insane situations. It may have taken her awhile, but she made her dream come true with her first published work, Snow Falling.
She managed to wrangle herself a husband who matched her crazy and they hatched three wonderful children.
If you were to ask her what gave her the courage to finally publish, she’d tell you it was her amazing family and friends. Support is vital in all things and when you’re afraid of your dreams, it will be your cheering section that will lift you up.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2024I was so excited when I learned War of the Wicked wasn't a standalone and Ren was going to get his story. The book starts off with Ren down in power and manpower, but he uses his keen mind and recruits Mykel as his bodyguard, and then starts to build alliances. Ren is ruthless in his desire to bring the war in Lucifer's Landing to an end, and only he knows the secret to his motivation. He has to decide whether he can trust Mykel with his secret, and with his heart. None of which will matter if he and Mykel can't survive the coming battle. Mykel isn't a part of Ren's world at all, but he soon finds himself tied to Ren heart and soul, and will do anything to keep Ren alive. And Mykel has an ace up his sleeve that just may save them. Davidson King is one of the few authors that keeps me glued to the pages of her books from start to finish. I love her world building and her characters. I resoundingly recommend Rise of the Ruthless and also War of the Wicked if you haven't read it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2024Book 2 in the “Lucifer’s Landing” series continues with the action from book 1. Ren Ikeda’s home has been destroyed and he lost the man he had feelings for (though those feelings were not reciprocated). When he confronts the man who is in charge of the renovation but whose carelessness caused another fire, he meets Mykal Finlay, former cop and military man. I hate to call these two enemies to lovers-more like dislike-to-lovers. Mykal is forced to protect Ren to save his brother from having to repay the damages to Ren’s home. While he doesn’t want to get involved in mafia issues, he quickly comes to care for Ren. This was a very fast-paced read as the action did not stop. The five mafia families are still battling over control of Lucifer’s Landing and thus there is never a dull moment. I am very intrigued by Micah and Giovanni. I hope their story is next. I love the little hacker. It was nice to see Dante and Rainn again and I look forward to reading more about these characters. A very enjoyable addition to this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2024I enjoyed the this book! There was mafia, alphabet government groups and slow relationship building. There are so many stories that can come from the cast of characters. I hope Gios story is next, I'm sure there's a good story there for Neil too. I hope Davidson King somehow incorporates Neil's team with Ren, Dante and the Greeks (I can't remember his name). I personally could have used a bit more spice, but that's just me. I would have enjoyed to read another spicy scene with Dante and Rainn must to remind us why we liked them from the first book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2024Damn, I never thought it was so worth reading!
Ren found his true love!!! Louis was the one got his brother and Ren got together! Two opposites found a way to make it work!
Yes few deaths but they were avenged by two sweethearts. Glad the story gotten better for second book!
Highly recommended!!
I hope to read the third for the computer hacker and Greek Mobster brother story!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2024Ren and Mikel’s story was filled with intrigue, passion, and yes…love. And, while I wish for peace in Lucifer’s Landing, I don’t expect it. Too many hints were dropped and I don’t trust Elias. I also REALLY hope Gio and (finder’s crossed) Micah get a HEA.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2024Welcome back to Lucifer’s Landing!
Dante and Rainn are taking back seat in this story while we see more of Ren and newcomer, Mykel. Picking up where we left off at the end of book one. Ren’s territory is under attack and threat of being taken away. He can’t let that happen. He needs support and he needs Mykel.
Overall, another great addition to the Lucifer’s Landing series. Another great addition to Davidson King’s booklist. Ms. King always has a way of bringing you in and keeping you entertained with her plot, characters, and writing. I love calling her books afternoon reads because once I start them I can’t put them down.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2024I love all this author works but this book right here...was amazing. I couldn't put it down. From the very first page it had me. I can't wait until it goes to audible.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2024I didn’t like this one as much as the first. The first one was rushed this one felt even more rushed. It felt like a race to the end which is disappointing because I wanted to like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rise of the Ruthless
Another great read from Davidson King with Ren and Mykel and Zeus. The three remaining Mob Bosses coming together to save Lucifer’s Landing was epic! But also the understanding and acceptance that grew between Ren and Mykel also led to true love for one another. I would love another story with Micah and Giovanni that incorporates all of the main characters throughout this series📚 💝📚
