Risking Immortality (The Loch & Key Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
She knows humanity’s prejudices against her kind are little more than delusional nightmares. Born, not made, vampires have been forced into the shadows by human ignorance. In any case, the Loch family, like many vampire clans, has thrived over the centuries. Building a successful business empire of bars and nightclubs means that their wealth and influence allows them to move around, easily remaining hidden in plain sight to avoid human suspicion. The bookwormish heiress, Amelia Loch, has thus never struggled to maintain a safe distance from the humans who vilify her species—and everyone else for that matter. But the time has come for Amelia to step out of the shadows, and the stakes have never been higher.
If Amelia doesn’t find her soulmate by the time the sun sets on her thirtieth birthday, she risks a descent into eternal madness. The fate of an unmated vampire is worse than death, both for the vamp and their family, who would be left no choice but to end their suffering.
Enter Erin, a feisty blonde bartender who captures Amelia’s attention and challenges her beliefs. Erin is everything Amelia had hoped for, except for one small detail: she’s human. Though it’s uncertain if a vampire and a human can successfully bond, Erin may be Amelia’s only hope. In a race against time, will love be enough to defy centuries of prejudice and prevent Amelia’s descent into darkness?
Amelia must decide if she can trust Erin with her truth, her heart—and her immortality.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2024I could not wait till this book hit my Kindle. I have never been disappointed with any of Alyson's books so no surprise that I loved this one. It's a totally different take on Vampire stories and I loved the originality that Alyson brought to this trope. It was a fast-paced read with little angst between the two characters. Amelia and Erin are so good together. Erin especially is not easy to handle when she goes into protective mode. Amelia's family is just amazing. I totally loved Lucille. As always, Alyson's talent brings unexpected twists and turns to the story but always with a finesse that only she has mastered. I am so looking forward to book 2.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2025I mostly enjoyed this book. The characters feel real, and I love that Amelia's family acts like a family. When I was ready to give her a good talking to, they actually did it! Erin reacts to Amelia's big reveal like people I actually know would.
The writing is stilted, though. I get that the author was probably trying to make Amelia and her family seem more formal, but I'm not sure it worked. But if you can overlook that, I recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024This was a very enjoyable read. Vampires always cool but these are nothing like in books I have read before besides the hotness factor of course. In this book they live quiet and peaceful and feed on animal blood. They also give birth and do not turn people.
Amelia and Erin so right for each other and their journey to a HEA so fun (and hot) to follow.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2025Enjoyed reading this! The storyline was amazing. I couldn't put it down. The beginning stages of Amelia and Erin's love story was incredible and seeing how things progressed was great. Patiently waited for the second book to come out!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2024This read very YA fanfiction meets book pages. The characters are 30 and 26, but again, the page illuminates how young the way they think is and their approach to situations is also very… dramatic. Fun vampy fic, soulmate conundrum that leaves one character a bloody mess, and an pseudo-HEA that leaves readers with a prompt to read the second book to see how this story pans out. It’s cute, but ended up skipping most of the dialogue as it seemed to meander and didn’t push the plot along much.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2025If you're looking for intrigue and gritty high stakes fights and vamp bampfing heroines defeating twisted villains to save complex damsels with dark secrets and traumatic pasts.....you won't find that here. If you want a romance between a brooding businesswoman with a loving but over involved family and a sassy spitfire bartender where one of them happens to be a vampire...well, here ya go. There is no antagonist in this. No scary parts. No fighting that isn't adult siblings bickering like kids for comedic effect. They have a sort of magical problem to overcome, and the vampire community is understanding and supportive throughout, and there are basically no interactions with humans other than the primary love interest and briefly the woman she's already dating when the book starts. The primary conflict is internal for the main character, who is the quintessential brooding vamp with moral quandaries that she gets moody and obsessive over, until someone calls her out and makes her chill out and communicate. In other words, the main character must find coping mechanisms for her anxiety so she can be with her fated mate and not go crazy and die.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2024I LOVED this book, so much so that I finished it in a single sitting.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve never read anything by Alyson that I didn’t absolutely adore. She is definitely one of my must read authors- if she wrote it I know I’ll love it! I completely fell in love with Erin and Amelia and their love. The way Alyson is able to capture deep emotions on a page leaves me freaking speechless and I cannot get enough of her writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read
This spent way to long on my TBR shelf. I knew this one was going to be good and I snapped it up the moment I could afford it (okay I couldn’t really afford it, but a I had to have it nonetheless) it did not disappoint. A refreshing take on an ancient legend. Would definitely recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Those vampires are different
The vampires of this book are different, so forget about anything you have ever heard or read about vampires. The vampires here are just more or less normal people who drink animal blood and whose only concern is to find their soulmate before they reach their thirties birthday. If they fail, well, they are damned.
Amelia is a vampire, 29, and hasn't found her soulmate until she meets Erin. The problem is that Erin is in a relationship and human. This complicates things for Amelia.
What happens with her and Erin - well you have to read the book. Unfortunately for us readers the problems aren't completely solved at the end of the book, and therefore we have to wait for the sequel.
