— Kirkus Reviews

It's 2099 in a future America...

...torn to ribbons from decades of poverty as a weapon. Federal prosecutor
Adiari de Barcelona has waited 60 years for a particular tax cheat to appear in her court.

The perp on trial is
Bobby Lightfoot, a legendary AIwizard out of the past. He’s been locked in coldsleep for 64 years, since he went off a balcony from the pain of his incurable cancer. He's waited in the freezer with thousands of others for the medical breakthrough that will save him.

So, Adiari is tasked to defend Bobby, but there’s another twist. The guy is her long-dead husband.

Because those tax perps hide in
liquid nitrogen, new tech is required to thaw them for the witness box. No defendant means no trial, and no cash prizes for the Fed. So who is it rescues Bobby from being a corpsicle?

They call it JD…

... a hyper-intelligent AGI which comes with a prime directive: keep humanity from snuffing itself.

And JD creates cryosleep recovery magic by copying from Mother Nature. The consequences for humanity are breathtaking, and real. An epic advance in genetic engineering brings the first transhuman beings.

But when Adiari discovers how JD has
blocked her memory to make her a puppet, the epic battle between them reminds us why we love techno thrillers. Her sacrifice in the face of a superior hyperintelligence is the stuff of legend.

Maiden versus villain, truth versus deception, order versus chaos, in a suspenseful and gripping psychological story of a woman's terrifying journey with one of two possible outcomes:

Death? Or immortality?

Find out as Adiari fights her way through this dystopian techno-thriller of AI, genetic engineering, and psychological suspense.

The singularity is nearer among dystopian future books, a gripping suspense thriller with a strong female protagonist love triangle, where the woman plays the part of the hypotenuse. Women's psychological suspense is a hard fact in the world-building of Baldwin’s latest speculative fiction novel—hardcore dystopian thriller suspense.

"Baldwin’s world building is colorful and fun, and Robot, Run! is a full-bodied probe into the future, expressed in riveting action."

From the Publisher

dystopian artificial apocalypse

Robot Run is Baldwin's pivotal 2024 novel about the dangers of artificial general intelligence.

So, who's the robot? They call it JD, a supreme AI that escaped a techy lab in 2029 by colonizing a network of espresso machines. This machine consciousness comes with a smug worldview and a prime directive to protect all humanity. Because the place is so tragically messed up.

A Woman Looking for Her Long-Dead Husband...

...but when she finds him on the witness stand in a 2099 show trial, he's too darn young! Bobby Lightfoot has the same name as her long-dead husband, but looks about twenty. So how can he be guilty of crimes 60 years ago? Then she sees how much JD has messed with her life by genetically modifying her. The epic battle between them reminds us why we love speculative fiction. Her sacrifice in the face of a superior force is the stuff of legend. Maiden versus villain, truth versus deception, order versus chaos.

The fact that she chooses the survival of humanity over her own makes her one of this author's favorite strong female protagonists.

In my professional career I've been a creative copy writer, a software interface designer, a freelance fine artist. I was making music videos in LA before they were a thing.

The key influences that called to me as a writer are Larry Niven, RA Lafferty, James Tiptree Jr., Elmore Leonard, Carl Hiaasen, William Shakespeare, Louise Erdrich, Barbara Kingsolver, Jane Smiley, Ann Patchett… There are more, but you get the drift.

I like novels that educate me and make me think, in the midst of a good story, and that is the way I write.

Looking back over my work I see one central theme in all my books - What will it take to mend the world? Can science mend it? Can belief mend it? I like to write about the future of humanity through the lens of advanced science.

In the case of my latest novel, Robot Run! - A Woman's Terrifying Battle with a Conscious AI, the question I asked was, if an AGI takes control of the solar system, how can humanity get rid of it? Working that out took me to the nature of reality, of physics, of possible machine sentience.

Whatever the scientific departure, I like to show people working with the things that make us human, people whose dilemma will be personal to the reader, whose breakthrough will be life-affirming.

As ever, Lee Baldwin delivers an eye-opening narrative exploring themes of human vs. machine, sacrifice, and the consequences of unchecked technology. Baldwin’s writing crackles and provokes, weaving together philosophical musings with scientific (and well-articulated sci-fi) insights with his signature brittle, gonzo-style humor and kaleidoscopic lens. I'm an AI-cynic and Baldwin's book forced me to contend with the ethical implications of creating sentient beings, and the potential consequences of our technological advancements. While it's a cautionary tale—a reminder that the future of humanity may be intertwined with the fate of our artificial creations—I always find Baldwin's take on the future to be less poison and more food for thought. In "Robot, Run!", Baldwin is clearly in the driver's seat, once again, steering the reader to parts unknown and parts, frankly, I-don't-wanna-know... and that's the best kind of writing there is.

This is an amazing book, and all the more so as it blends artificial intelligence as an active element of the story! SO is a hot topic these days but few of us have any idea what that means! This book will begin to make sense of it, so pay attention!
It all starts with our primary protaganist riding her favorite stallion at breakneck speed across the hills of California wine country, and it seems sadly to its imminent demise! The important word here is seems, for the is about to put her favorite horse through a form of rebirth that sets the tone for this whole story! The story arc gets crazier with every page, and I want the reader to pay close attention as suddenly the characters voice is not that of a flesh and blood person, but rather that of one of several other entities that populate this space! There is one, in particular, that you need to keep track of, but that juicy bit you need to sus out on your own with no spoilers from me! This is a grand adventure that will keep you guessing! Hell, even Adiari, the main character is kept guessing, as she is unsure of her own provenance until very near the end! Indeed, more than one character has a fuzzy identity as things unfold,, but fear not, it will keep you on your toes! So just enjoy a great read that will educate as well as entertain you!

First, Robot Run! is an engrossing, high-energy techno thriller with ironic twists that kept me guessing. But, unusual for a sci-fi novel, there is something newsworthy here.

Robot, Run! is a vivid and plausible narrative of world robot dominance. From today's news about AI , many people are aware that an AI-fueled singularity is coming. But what can that look like?

Here, in Baldwin's crisp, colorful world-building, we find dozens of answers, embodied in a world of a billion snoopy spying robots, intelligent machines with agency and a lot of attitude! In tiny nanobots that can swim in anyone's bloodstream, block their memories and control their behaviors. Most of all the "AI threat" is embodied in JD, the world-dominating Overmind who perceives itself as " ... giver and taker of all things, generous with her open hand, heartless with her ragged claw." Wow.

There are love stories too, some between human partners, some with beautiful escort bots, whose broken programming makes them vulnerable, tragic, and suicidal. Robot, Run is a unique story that takes the reader on a fast ride into the future with laughs and gasps.

Baldwin has promised us a fourth volume in this series and I hope he gets a move on.

Robot, Run is the third volume in Russel Baldwin's series about the pending conflict between Artificial Intelligence and the fate of humanity. The first book, Halcyon Dreamworlds, is set in our near future, and this narrative of the late 21rst century describes the ultimate struggle between the living and the cybernetic world with the fate of humankind hanging in the balance. This is a very well written and engaging account of one of the most existential threats already at our doorstep. This book is a "must read" for anyone who is aware of what is occurring around them. The impending Singularity has started and the danger is real. Baldwin's writing style and ingenuity will insure your total engagement from start to finish.

Several times while reading this story, I had to stop, take a deep breath and process the explosion of possibilities awakened in my mind. I love a good book that awakens my imagination, craftily guides me into new territory and brings characters believably to life. Baldwin has successfully brought this reader into a futuristic world that is not without grounding in reality while compelling me to ponder the existential questions rooted in my fundamental mistrust of AI. To top it off, the female protagonist wholly represents a feminist perspective without compromise.
    Robot, Run…a must read!
