This was a pleasant story with action that kept my eyes moving along the page. Heather Hansen has written a great start to an interesting series.
Catherine Benedict lives a posh life on her father's estate, but her heart aches for adventure before she is forced to marry and never has the chance again. And adventure indeed follows when Catherine decides to slip away from home while her father is gone on business. A bit out of her element, she very quickly finds herself on the wrong ship and in the company of some lively men of the sea who take her for a cabin boy. Along the way Catherine overhears matters that involve her own family, and from there matters get rather turbulent.
This story has a good pace and vivid but concise imagery that I found refreshing. I like when stories don't dwell on details that ultimately have no function, and Miss Hansen does a great job of keeping it short and sweet. One scene in particular that I really lingers in my mind involves whales at night. It's just one of several neatly written scenes that function well together without ending up as filler. Characters and dialogue seem fairly accurate for the time period without being written way over the top, and the world is historically believable but still imaginative in its own way. The ocean setting and stormy events make this a great story to curl up with in a warm blanket and binge a rainy afternoon away.
I would only knock off points for grammar and spelling. There are a few typos, like a pour/poor mix up and quite a few incorrect capitalizations, but these errors weren't enough to disengage me from a fun, warm, and intriguing story.

Rogue Wave by Heather Hansen is the first book in this series. Catherine Benedict believed when she was eighteen she could choose her husband. Her father, Baron Benedict, announced he chose her husband, and she is to be married as soon as he returns from a business trip. Heartbroken, Catherine runs away for the adventure which she has dreamed. Captain Lucas Harding is commissioned to go to France and deliver an important document. Catherine gets confused on the docks and ends up on Captain Harding's ship. What will he do when he finds out she is not who she says she is?

I found Rogue Wave fascinating. With an intriguing weave of characters, deception, and danger, Heather Hansen draws you into a spectacular voyage. The characters are bold and determined. You feel you are experiencing the danger while facing storms, battles, and discovering their heart. I love how the author sets up this novel for the next one or two.

    Format: Paperback
Great full-length debut novel by Heather Hansen! This story follows Catherine Benedict, the daughter of a wealthy sugar plantation owner, who seemingly has it all. Although she has all the comforts of life, she feels a nagging emptiness: she has yet to explore the world. And with her upcoming engagement to a Lord, her time for adventure is quickly running out.

In a moment of bravery, she sneaks out and sets off towards the docks, intending to board a passenger ship. However, she ends up on a privateer’s ship and quickly learns of the rigors of being a sailor. Sailing to France, she unknowingly stumbles upon a secret that her father was keeping and it unravels into disaster. But now, she’s not an idle observer: she has the power to control her fate and the fate of her family.

My only suggestions would be that I would have liked to have seen more conflict. The diehard YA fan in me wanted to see more raw emotion in the intense scenes, and I would have loved to have been directly witnessing more of Catherine’s transformation, as the author tended to summarize scenes.
