Rope the Moon: A Small Town Second Chance Romance (Runaway Ranch Book 2) Kindle Edition
A Sexy, Small Town, Military standalone romance by bestselling author, Ava Hunter.
I was a good girl who played by the rules. Except when it came to Davis Montgomery.A handsome former Marine with a rough touch and a filthy mouth. A man I loved.
But when he didn’t ask me to stay, I took it as a sign to leave my small town and chase my dream. What a mistake that turned out to be.
Now, I’m back, running from the flames of my past to find a fresh start.
But fresh doesn’t always mean easy. Not when I’m now the town outcast. Not when I can’t hide my bruises or the baby I’m carrying.
When Davis finds out what happened to me, his protective nature comes out and he does the unthinkable. He moves me onto Runaway Ranch, determined to keep me safe. He says he’ll do everything he can to get me back on my feet. But I never expected the deep feelings and scorching attraction between us to come back even stronger.
One night, the embers of our past are rekindled and I remember all the reasons why I’ve loved him for so long.
That one spark gives us back our second chance. But second chances don’t come easy, especially when the shadow from my past is lurking. And ready to take back what’s his. . .

- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2025This second chance romance took me by surprise—in the best way.
Dakota was raised by her father and has always looked after her younger sister. With big dreams and a fierce determination to leave behind her small-town, country life, she’s ready to chase a career that could change everything.
Davis returns to Runaway Ranch after leaving the military, knowing his brother needs him. He never expects to meet the one person who feels like home—Dakota. As much as he wants to hold on, he knows he has to let her go so she can follow the path she’s destined for.
Dakota’s career takes off faster than she ever imagined. Her talent brings her success beyond her wildest dreams. But one terrifying, life-altering moment continues to haunt her—and she realizes the only way to survive is to run.
Rope the Moon is a gripping story of love, loyalty, and sacrifice. It’s filled with suspense, emotional vulnerability, and the kind of cowboy hero who loves with quiet strength. Davis will steal your heart—one selfless act at a time.

Thoughts: I loved this book just as much as the first. It really built on everything from the first book. There was more insight into the brothers’ relationships. There was more Ruby and Charlie. There were more hints at the relationship between Wyatt and Fallon. And it still managed to focus on Davis and Dakota.
I really loved the second chance aspect of this story. Both Davis and Dakota made mistakes and kept secrets and I liked that it wasn’t one sided. Davis could have asked Dakota to stay, but that could have ended in resentment. Dakota could have come back to Resurrection, but then she would have been sacrificing her dreams. I think they ended up right where they were supposed to be. They both had things to work on/towards in the six years they were apart and I thought their relationship was better for it.
I liked that once Davis was all in, he really fought for Dakota. He wanted everyone to finally know how in love with Dakota he was and finally told her all his secrets. While Dakota was trying to suss out Davis’ feelings, she had a lot to overcome herself. She had to accept her place in Resurrection and needed time to come to terms with becoming a mother. Davis did a great job of giving her space and pushing when she needed to be pushed.
This was a fantastic story and only left me wanting more from the Montgomery brothers and Resurrection.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2024There’s something about this book that had my hopes too high. Maybe it was the brooding older brother, the ex military mentality of being in control and protective. Or maybe it was the second chance that made me giddy knowing the lovers were going to have the whole insta loving thing that grips the reader right away? I really do love the second book in a series though too, like we know the characters and it’s more down to business. Davis is down bad for Dakota, I mean 6 years with no other woman is a little unrealistic…Noah from the notebook went 6 years without Allie but he atleast had another lady friend. Dakota had a believable story and I understood her character more than I expected too. Good story, 90%-97% of the book was crazy, I couldn’t even turn the page to look!! The only reason I would give 3.5 stars instead of 4 is because Ford. Davis’ twin brother. He was hurting and he made comments to Davis and instead of mending the relationship or trying at all, Davis just got angry. I didn’t like the whole turning the brothers against each other because their girls are top priority? Like I get that but I felt it was too much in the book for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2025I always love a second chance romance and I’m usually hesitant on pregnancy in a book but I should have known to trust Ava Hunter! It was so sweet and easy to read (I finished it in a day lol)
Read this if you’re in the mood for…
- second chance romance
- pregnancy
- touch her and d!e vibes
- she’s on the run
- found family
- nightmare comfort
This was the perfect continuation to the Runaway Ranch world! I loved the glimpses of Charlie and Ruby but it didn’t take way from the new story. The pacing is so good in this book that I couldn’t put it down. There’s a chapter/prologue at the beginning as a flashback to when they were younger and it’s the perfect hint at their relationship before she moved. Not too much, not too little to where you don’t feel connected to their reunion.
Here are a few of my favorite things…
- Davis is a mother hen and I love it lol
- The friendship between Ruby and Dakota
- the brotherly banter and continued mention of writing their girl’s name on their boot
I’m jumping right into the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2025This was a good story. This is a 2nd chance, a pregnant girl on the run, a cowboy romance. The couple were perfection. I love the way they were in love from page 1 to the last page. The relationship between the sisters was fun to watch change. I am so glad there are so many brothers so we can have more stories. This had me in tears a few times. I giggled and swooned. The big drama had me on the edge of my seat. The ending was so sweet, and I am a sucker for extended epilogues.
I will be reading the next books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rope the moon
All my stars for this book are only and solely for Davis. 🌟 Oh my man! He was such a good and hot boyfriend material. 🔥 He was just so into Dakota that I could not help myself but feel jealous of her. 😍 Whereas Dakota is concerned, I did not like her character a lot. I found her mean sometimes, but then aren't we all at times? 🤷♀️ The tropes of this book were my favorite, so I just could not put this down. 📚 Second chance romance always gets me. 💖 It was also nice to see Charlie and Ruby in this book again. Those moments were just so priceless for me. 💫 I'm also looking forward to other books in this series. 📖✨

5.0 out of 5 stars Davis and Dakota are perfect
Morally grey cowboy? Check
Pregnant girl on the run? Double check
These Montgomery men are something else. The banter between them is just perfection.
An ex-military man who steps up for the girl he once loved but let go when she returns—pregnant with another man’s baby?! SHEER perfection.
The way I loved this story. Davis and Dakota were end game. He knew it. She knew it. But the angst, the pining, and the secrets were just so perfect.
I also loved the suspense plot throughout this story. It was there but just at the back of your mind, lingering and waiting for its moment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this second chance romance
This book is the second book in the Runaway Ranch series, following Tame the Heart.
Dakota was such a strong character who had to move on from her traumatic experiences and try to find way to make a life for herself and her unborn baby, while still protecting them from the threat presented by her ex. Dakota, when in a tough situation, showed just how strong she was.
Davis was a great male character who, like Dakota, had a traumatic past, and it was still with him in the present. Despite this, he was so protective of the people around him, especially Dakota, who he had a connection with and was determined to help her heal and restore normalcy to her life, especially when she had am unborn baby to protect and bring into the world.
The book was a brilliant addition to this series, and I look forward to more books written by Ava.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally I'm back to Runaway Ranch! 🤠⭐️
🌙 My review of Rope The Moon by @avahunter 🌠
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
• She's pregnant, but it isn't his 🎀
• Second chance 🌷
• Small town romance 🦢
• "Touch her and you die" vibes 🦋
• Found family 🤍
This second-chance romance was executed flawlessly! A swoon worthy protective marine and the girl that got away all those years ago who needs his help, what could go wrong? 🐚
When I heard Ava Hunter was coming out with a sequel to Tame The Heart, I thought there was no way it'd be better than the first. I am very happy to announce I was wrong! This was just the right amount of angsty "will they or won't they" and sweetness to really make my heart race. If you're searching for a second chance romance, this is a perfect one to start with! 💌
Stuck in an abusive relationship and having just found out she's pregnant, Dakota has had enough. She goes back to her hometown with the help of her secret ex-fling from six years ago.. turns out the sparks never left. 🌺
The cowboy army man who's still pining for the girl he let go, when she finally comes back to town and he finds out she's pregnant.. but it's not his. Will he finally own up to his feelings and tell her? Or is it too late for their happily ever after? (Of course it isn't! This is Ava Hunter we're talking about, HEA guaranteed!!) 🌻

5.0 out of 5 stars 🧁 Davis & Dakota 🧁
Ava's writing is pure magic – she makes you instantly fall in love with her characters and her writing. I missed Runaway Ranch so much and was happy to be back. Ever since Charlie and Ruby’s book, I have been curious which Montgomery's brother will get his book. Once I heard that Davis would be it – I got so excited! Both characters were fantastic and I loved watching them stand by each other through thick and thin. They were so protective, strong, and such a dynamic duo.
Davis is protective, brooding, and so extremely loving to those he cares about. I adored how much he and his brothers cared so much about Ruby. Ava's ability to write a pregnancy trope where the baby is not his and makes it so insanely wholesome, real, and touching is astonishing to me.
Dakota was fierce, strong-willed, determined, and struggled with certain aspects of her life like a real person, which was refreshing to read characters where everything isn't so perfect at the beginning. I admired her for wanting to be independent she was the perfect counterpart to Davis.
For me, it’s the way he shows her love through acts of service. Him getting a tracking device to put on her dog tags - his - that she wears with a panic button. Or how he downloads a baby app on his phone to monitor its growth and learn. He also starts buying baking supplies for the ranch's professional kitchen so she'll want to bake again. Davis was so protective of Dakota and her baby - he didn’t hesitate once to love her baby as his own You could just feel how much they still cared and loved each other, even if they felt like they couldn't live it out anymore - now that Dakota was starting over.
Aside from the relationship, this book was FULL of character and relationship development within their families. Dakota leaving her family and losing contact with them was a real strain on her and her sister. The change in their relationship from the beginning of the book to the end was fantastic.
The Montgomery boys are the definition of broody and grumpy – but they care deeply about their family and protect each other. If one of them needs them, they drop everything to protect their family. I’m so in love with them all 🥹
I cannot wait for the rest of this series! I’ve fallen in love with the Runaway Ranch Series and the Montgomery boys – I can’t wait for their stories. Especially Wyatt and Fallon’s story is the one I’m the most excited about🤭🩷
