Rosaly's New School Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

Rosaly's New School is an early title by EJO, which sets up the same problem that Jandy Mac faces in Schooldays at the Abbey - but this is a different story, and EJO deals with it in a very different way!

The EJO Society, through its magazine, The Abbey Chronicle, seeks to promote interest in this author and her work, and looks forward to making many more hitherto rare titles available to a wider public over the next few years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Oxenham
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 19, 2022
    Format: KindleVerified Purchase
This is one of Oxenham's early books, touching on a mix of themes found in various of her other books. The basic dilemma - an unexpected heir with a legal claim displacing those who are currently in possession of the property - also appears in The Girl Who Wouldn't Make Friends and Schooldays at the Abbey. There's the hoodwinking of legal guardians that also appears in Maidlin to the Rescue, the broad trope of an independent-minded young woman adjusting to boarding school life, and causing sensations in the process as she treats punishments as a price to choose to pay rather than something to be avoided at all costs, and the native pupil taking a lead in hikes and other local school outings giving a degree of authority over even the mistresses that appears a few times.

While it's interesting seeing a number of the author's themes in a novel configuration, the book shares the charm of many of her early works, as well as offering a fascinating glimpse of early 20th Century life.

The only obvious improvement would be if the story tied in to the Abbey series rather than being entirely isolated.

3.0 out of 5 stars Norful and norfully spoilt the book for me.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 17, 2023

Not a favourite EJO book, for me it was spoilt by the frequent use of norful and norfully through out the book, it seemed out of character for a girl who had been well educated by a Governess, according to the story. I liked some of the characters, but it seemed unnecessarily long winded.
