Editorial Reviews
From the Author
The Stories: Roxi is a rescue dog with a nice life. She wants all the animals in the world to have a nice life too. In each story she finds happy animals and sad animals. With her Super Hero powers and her message about kindness, Roxi helps the sad animals to become happy animals. Through age-appropriate content and cute illustrations, each story focuses on a specific animal and a corresponding animal welfare issue.
For young children, the stories are fun and entertaining promoting kindness towards animals; however, for the adult (parent, grandparent, care-giver, or educator) reading to the child, the author's intent is a deeper message about animal welfare and how we all can help.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2019What an interesting children's book this was. Roxy rescues the chickens is a wonderful way to teach kids to respect animals and teach them how they too deserve to live a pleasant life, without fear or pain. My niece who is 5, laugh as I was describing Roxy tumbling around. As well the images are beautiful. If you want a book that teaches good values, this is a great one.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2019I really enjoyed reading this story. It was lighthearted and whimsical. The watercolor illustrations are great and the storyline will keep you turning pages to find out what happens next! Roxi the dog is the hero in this story. My kids will enjoy reading this as well. The story also brings awareness to the practice of keeping chickens in cages rather than free-range. I would highly recommend this book to children ages 3-5.

Children learn that if they see something wrong they can take action to change it. It also carries the message of sharing with others your challenges.
Animal rights groups should include this book in their libraries for their children and new members.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2020The author chose an interesting way to teach children about issues and how humans make decisions that impact animals in the world. Parents can use this book to introduce the differences in how chickens are treated and begin a meaningful conversation.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2019This book puts a complicated issue in simple terms for a child to grasp. I appreciated the extra detail at the end about real chickens and what some of them have to face. It was an eye-opener to me and no doubt it would be to others as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2020Roxi the dog works to investigate the chickens and hopes to make things equal and fair for them. With some accidental mischief Roxi finds a way to help.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misleading
I thought I was buying my sweet, compassionate vegan girl a story about a dog who stands up for what is right. The message in this book is to “only buy eggs from happy chickens”, but this is misleading. The entirety of the egg industry has a very sad, very dark reality. This book is leading our sweet children to believe that organic and free-range equals happy chickens, when all free-range means is that chickens are crammed into a gigantic dark shed absolutely packed beyond belief with chickens who’ve never seen the light of day nor felt grass, and the poor things (happy chickens?) still have the tips of their beaks burnt off with no anesthetic so that they don’t peck each other to death. These are free range chickens... instead of being in cages. Our kids deserve to learn that it is never okay to exploit animals or humans.
For gods sake, in order for the industry to make money, the male chicks are discarded (literally macerated alive in a machine or suffocated in large plastic bags) and that the females are made to unnaturally lay several hundred eggs a year, depleting their bodies and making them very, very sick.
The bottom line is that they all end up at the slaughterhouse and killed, having only lived about 1/4 how long they could have otherwise lived. What a horrific existence.
Yes, it is horrendous. Let’s respect our children enough to not tell them the opposite.
Happy chickens? Not a lie I want my daughter being told.
