Royally Not Ready: A Royal Romance Duet (Not Really Royal Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 18,154 ratings

From USA Today and Amazon Charts bestselling author Meghan Quinn, comes a fresh take on a royal romance with a twist. Laugh out loud funny and full of some of her steamiest scenes yet, Quinn takes you on an unexpected, sizzling fairytale journey.

So there I was selling bikinis out of my truck in South Beach Miami, getting ready to kick off a wet t-shirt contest when the world’s biggest grouch approached me - Keller Fitzwilliam.

The man had the sultriest British accent I've ever heard. And he looked like he just walked off a Viking boat and into a suit tailored specifically for his impressively muscular frame. Only problem is, he had the warmth of an ice pick and he kept telling me he was here to take me back to his home country.

Of course, I didn't follow him. I might be up for a good time, but I'm also educated enough to know leaving with a stranger isn't smart. Well, that's until he mentioned my mom's name.
My mom who passed away several years ago.

So after some serious fact-checking, my bikini-clad bum went with him to a sub-arctic country I had never heard of just north of the British Isles, where I found out my grandpa was the king of said freezing country, and I was the one and only heir.

Desperate to learn more about my mom, I decided to give this princess thing a chance.

Good idea, right? Wrong.

Because Mr. Ice Pick was put to the task of training me and he’s not just cold as ice, he’s pompous, aggravating, and possessive. And did I mention we have to share a bathroom in a tiny castle?

We are oil and water every single day and even though he’s training me to be queen, I have this simmering desire to kneel before him.

5 star read!
Yet another book by Meghan Quinn that had me laughing and swooning the whole time reading it. The passion I felt between Lily and Keller throughout this story was unmatched, they just fit together so perfectly. Lily had such a sassy and hilarious attitude that had me rolling. Keller was a little bit more put together, serious and equal parts alpha and romantic 🔥 Royal Romance✔️ Grumpy Sunshine✔️ Forced Proximity ✔️ 5/5⭐️

Keller is the king's personal secretary and is sent on a mission to collect and educate a small country's last hope of finding an heir to the throne. Lilly sells bikinis off a truck in Miami and was never told she came from royalty. They connect over having both lost their parents and Lilly's sunshine slowly wears down Keller's grumpitude. It also helps that they're isolated in a small abandoned castle in a remote area of the country.
But when they head to the capital where Lilly will meet her grandparents, Jeller's insecurities flare up and he abandons her on her most important day. He loses his job and is banned from the palace but manages to find his way back into Lilly's heart. 4/5 spicy

This review has nothing to do with the book itself. I’m giving it 4 stars because the author and her work doesn’t deserve a bad reflection because of this situation. Unfortunately I didn’t get to read more than 15 pages. From the very first page, page after page revealed itself to not have been glued in. Out of just over 100 pages, almost 20 of them had absolutely nothing holding the page in. Because I waited to read the book, I didn’t discover this until the return date had already passed. Yesterday morning I chatted with an Amazon employee online and he assured me that I could still return it and that he would send me a return label in a few hours. I never got that email. I called Amazon and talked to another employee on the phone who told me not only could I not return the book, but there was nothing to indicate that the events of yesterday even happened. Meaning the man I chatted with lied to me. I understand that the policy exists for a reason and if I had been told yesterday that I could not return the book, I would have accepted that without a problem but when an employee tells you that something will be done, in good faith, they should follow through with it. My disappointment in Amazon has been growing in the condition my books in particular have arrived in. Considering this, I will order books from any other distributor over Amazon from now on.

It started off strong, but my interest had fizzled by the end. This is something a little different from Quinn, though it still feels like one of her steamy rom coms. I really enjoyed the first 30ish%, with its crackling chemistry and TONS of sexual tension. Our hero is intense and loyal to a fault, so he does his best to resist this overtly sexual and persistent heroine. The opposites attract dynamic worked, and it definitely felt like a spicy play on The Princess Diaries or My Fair Lady. About a third of the way in, I started to get a little uncomfortable with the power dynamics at play, and that ended up being the book's downfall for me. But there's a lot of good stuff going on - especially for fans of humorous royal romances with a hearty dose of k!nky spice.

The story follows Lilly, a woman who is living her best life in Florida. She runs wet t-shirt contests and is a bit of a wild child (both in and out of the bedroom), so it's a shock to discover that she's actually royalty. When a mysterious and super sexy stranger requests that she visit her long-lost family overseas, Lilly isn't sure what to think. But the promise of meeting the family she never knew about is too enticing to resist, and Lilly finds herself traveling abroad with Keller. When their plans go awry and Lilly is forced to spend a ton of alone time with Keller, it's not a hardship. He may be a buttoned-up suit on the outside, but Lilly has seen his tattoos and an entirely different side to his personality peeking beneath that polished exterior. Try as he might, Keller can't seem to resist the infuriating and all-consuming future queen.

It should be mentioned that it looks like we're not done with this couple yet - it does not end on a cliffhanger, but their story isn't finished either. Unfortunately, both characters did enough to turn me off in the back half that I'm not overly enthusiastic about following them post-HFN. Keller is SUPER controlling, and I'm not sure that it was a great idea to have an explosive, temperamental hero (who is also a Dom) be in charge of "training" Lilly on how to be a queen. The level of control grated on me after awhile, and their bedroom activities did not help the situation. I liked that Lilly wasn't weak or timid, but she was overly aggressive in her pursuit of Keller. As other readers have mentioned, if the genders were swapped, none of her actions would be deemed acceptable - she coerced Keller into crossing lines he repeatedly said he didn't want to cross. He was clear, and she didn't listen. For that reason, I had a lot of trouble re-engaging with the story in the back half, despite how much I had enjoyed it at the beginning. There is some truly great sexual tension at the start, and I liked the fish out of water/sudden royal situation. The forced proximity was also stellar. But those issues with both characters diminished my love of the story significantly, and I just couldn't connect with it fully.

I will devour any Meghan Quinn book that comes out in a matter of days. And this one? Did. Not. Disappoint. In. The. Slightest! It was honestly so funny that I was cackling to myself aloud at times. Not only was it hilarious, but it was also very steamy, extremely heartfelt at times, and also very touching. The storyline was great, even managing to give not only a good twist that I didn't see coming (which was so shocking by the way), but also planted a seed with an air of mystery for the second instalment. All I can say is wow, can't wait to read the second book, I loved this so much I immediately shelved it on my stand-out book list on Goodreads. Love, love, loved it. Happy reading!

The heroines of modern day romantic novels are all independent, fiesty and intelligent women, which is good but very rarely is the female in higher and more dignified position than the man. So, this is heartening. To have a stronger female lead than the man and pulling it off so well.

The novel is gripping, funny, intensely romantic and a fairytale like feel. What more could a reader want? Do read :)

Such a beautiful story. In the beginning, the story reminded me a bit of the movie "The Princess Diaries". But it turned out so much better... It was funny, sad, romantic and you got attached to the characters. Couldn't stop reading!
